David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

Maybe they both tried to kill her hence why both said they did

yes I guess you didn't have to know too much about series 1 to follow it. I enjoyed it, though the puzzle wasn't too much of a puzzle really!

It had very little to do with Cambridge other than a few gratuitous shots of King's college chapel...
There isn't a theatre or most of the other buildings in Cambridge, especially not the police station, and none of the roads have ever been as empty as that

placemats · 20/08/2026 22:32

What has happened to Ludwig's aka John Taylor's glasses?

PrincessScarlett · 20/08/2026 22:48

Sad they have got rid of Finch and Evans and I couldn't gel with the 2 newcomers but perhaps they will grow on me. Ziegler referring to Cole as a Evans was perhaps a nod to the old partnership that is missing.

But thoroughly enjoyable tonight. It was like an old friend popping round and despite not seeing them for ages you just carry on right where you left off.

So, Carter is secretly investigating the Sinclair files despite officially being told by Shaw in front of John that noone should be investigating. Is Carter working undercover for someone else or his own purposes? He was James's new partner so was he put with James as part of his undercover work or is this something new?

What has happened to Ludwig's aka John Taylor's glasses?

Didn’t he get used to contacts as James didn’t wear them

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats I thought I recognised it, but definitely not from Cambridge!

What’s up with the weird focus on the camera? The edges of the frame are really blurry (assuming it’s not my TV πŸ˜‚)

I recognised it too, but didn’t know where it was, I just knew I’d been there.

We noticed the wierd out of focus effect too, it looked artificial and really distracting. A shame as the rest of the program was great. Loved the Solomon theme in the puzzle as well as in the opera.

Yes! We spent ages fiddling with it thinking it was our TV. Initially thought it was my glasses. What is up with it??

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 21/08/2026 05:56

Was fully intending to watch just v one but then binged all three.
Not finding Lucy as annoying in this series thankfully.

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2026 06:30

The fuzz is probably part of the 'quirky' styling but also based on an assumption that people are watching on certain equipment. If you look, you'll see this fuzz on various Netflix shows , too and Australian dramas often have this look.

I didn't see it in Ludwig, must admit, but was watching on a small TV.

Sometimes it is the use of an anamorphic camera lens or it was filmed using a very wide lens . It coudl be an attempt to create that vintage look which we also see in costuming, set design and colour.

Funnily enough, there was a Reddit on Ludwig doing this a year ago!

I really don’t like adults wearing ankle socks with dresses or skirts - glaring at Lucy.

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/08/2026 07:57

I didn't notice the fuzz but my TV is small. I do wonder why people in dramas don't put their lights on though. This is not confined to Ludwig.

We watched the second episode on iPlayer and the colours were worse in that one. Felt like it was evening but the sun was shining.

Enjoyed both episodes.

the80sweregreat · 21/08/2026 08:59

So Ludwig and Lucy are really investigating the police too. I recognized the lady politician as Fleabags sister.

It’s an easy watch - but basically whichever minor character has any lines (or has been in a previous soap etc) - they’re the murderer. Once you’ve spotted that, it’s like
colouring by numbers. It’s formulaic.

I couldn’t get on with Unruly either but I like Mitchell as a comedian / panellist and his autobiography was good.

This post is demonstrably not correct in relation to the plotlines. Last night's episode was further evidence of that fact.

I find Lucy a very interesting character. John has been her best friend since they were children. They know each other inside out. It's obvious they care deeply for each other. And yet she married James who looks identical to her best friend. Does she not see John when she married James? I wonder if she married James because he's the more outgoing twin, James asked her first or she just wanted a way to keep John in her life. It was implied in the first series that James wasn't always very nice to John so surely Lucy knew that being John's best friend?

Loving the fondness between all three of them. I'm sure no one in the household gives a hoot about what the other wears.

placemats · 21/08/2026 14:09

I've watched all three so far πŸ˜€

My seals are lipped.

Am I the only person who is finding it really dark? I’ve had to put the brightness up high and turn the lights off but I’m still having trouble seeing stuff.

LiliesOnTheWater · 21/08/2026 14:28

I find it a bit dark, but found the volume even more difficult and had to put the volume up - even then it seemed kind of indistinct at times. Maybe I'm just getting old?!

I can't work out what time period it's meant to be set in. I thought John's phone was meant to be out-of-date and show that he wasn't really into tech, but then the decor, clothes, car etc look like decades earlier, so the phone might be really high-tech for that time.
