David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

Personally I would prefer Matt Neville's hideaway cottage in the middle of nowhere (season 1) to a caravan.

moto748e · 25/09/2026 23:54

OK, thanks, with all the excitement of the final ep, I’d forgotten about what happened with Matt. But the point is, he's still on the run, and he and his family are still at risk? And he knows stuff, so he's a factor, moving on.

I recently listened to Sherlock Holmes’ Thor Bridge on Radio 4, this β€”murderβ€” suicide had distinct parallels to that story.
Given the suicide was only worked out once the team was off the case, and JK walked out and was given the gun shortly after, I wonder how they did the cover-up to let her off this time.
As far as the evidence any court might see went, JK had means, motive and opportunity yet was released after being charged. Plods would never look up the chimney for the other braces buckle.

@moto748e @diddl Matt Neville was last seen in episode 5. Russell met with him in the sushi bar where the murder happened. Russell gave Matt a large amount of money in return for evidence on the Sinclair case and Matt said he was going to buy a caravan in Devon (?) and had got a job lined up as a security guard.

Yes!

I found that odd as I thought he had been in hiding!

He had been in hiding but Russell coaxed him out with the promise of Β£10k. Matt obviously needed the money as he kept mentioning the money and as soon as he got it he was off.

So the first death was the hot tub?

Which Zeigler covered up?

Holly Pinder was killed because she found out Zeigler was corrupt?

Mandy Zeigler was killed because she was going to tell James about her dad?

Sinclair had connected JK to the deaths so he was killed?

PrincessScarlett · 26/09/2026 11:30

@diddl Holly Pinder was killed by her 'boyfriend' Adam who is currently in prison. Holly and Adam were blackmailing several police people (due to Holly's job as IT person in police) and Adam found out she was cutting him out of the 50/50 split so he killed her. Her death led to the discovery of a lot of evidence regarding Sinclair, Zeigler etc. I think Holly was potentially going to blackmail James if she hadn't been killed hence her quizzing John to check if he was James and her beckoning Lucy to her flat (presumably to reveal James as John) the night she was killed.

You're correct about the others.

diddl · 26/09/2026 13:04

Thank you PrincessScarlett.

Not sure why I'm trying to get it straight in my mind as I'll have forgotten by the next seriesπŸ™„πŸ˜‚

A bit late the thread - I’ve been watching each episode on Sunday evenings. I’ve just watched the last episode. Really enjoyed this series. Thanks for some of the explanation above. 😊

the80sweregreat · 27/09/2026 19:56

We definitely need an evidence board! A big posh glass one

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/09/2026 06:38

i found it quite unsatisfying

So did I.

Freshrain · 27/09/2026 23:39

So if cctv caught Joanne why didn't it catch them at the chiefs house as well and peering through the Window

Just caught up with the last episode tonight, and this was my thought as soon as they showed the CCTV footage of Joanne Kemplar being there. Confused

I've enjoyed the series, but the whole "..... to be continued" ending was very disappointing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2026 07:40

Tho guess if /when they find James the series is over

unless will just be weekly murders solved

I assumed it was a camera of his that he then switched off.

I agree @Freshrain, the β€œto be continued” ending was so disappointing.

Yes, I was quite hoping for a resolution of it.

They could perhaps find a reason for James to be recuperating at home/elsewhere so off screen.

Although then it would be odd for John to still live there & be driven around by Lucy.

Tbh I wouldn't miss Lucy.

I don't love Lucy!
