David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

Mark Bonnar is one of those β€˜if he’s in it, it’ll be good’ kind of actors for me. He’s brilliant in everything I’ve seen him in.

Oh I love Anna ❀️ That uncertain grin she does is fab.

She's very funny. She reminds me of Wallace and Gromit when she does that grin.

i love the journalist, newspaper owner - Mark Bonnar
he is perfect

Edited

I think his role will be expanding.

He correctly worked out what Lucy was doing, and I think, given the look on his face when that Β£10k transaction was going on in front of him and all manner of things were being mentioned, that his journalistic instincts have been reawakened. He's at the Advertiser, why? Blacklisted from actual newspapers? Although he started at the Daily Star, who knows where he's worked over the years (decades) and what he's covered.

tinyspiny · 21/09/2026 20:44

Mark Bonnar is fantastic in this , a real asset .

Umanresources · 22/09/2026 14:15

Anna Maxwell Martin was excellent in Until I Kill you, which was based on a true story about her relationship with a killer (Sean Evans, who played the young Morse.)

I’m thoroughly enjoying Ludwig though. I’m going to have to watch both series again, as I’m still not sure what’s happening half the time. I’m blaming my medication, as I keep dozing through programmes that are on after 7 pm!

Mark Bonner is so good in everything, I love him in this, along with David Mitchell. I’d really enjoy being friends with most of these people.

TheSmellOfSea · 22/09/2026 14:42

@Umanresources I saw that too (Until I kill you) She was amazing. Harrowing though.

BessMarvin · 22/09/2026 18:30

Just saw Mark Bonnar is in Marble Hall Murders which I'd also been waiting impatiently to be on TV.

It might not be just your medication. I do not take any, and I struggled to work out what was happening at the end of series 1. I also can't remember enough about the first series. Basically, I was going in without all of the information I needed. I should have done a re watch before embarking on this second one.

the80sweregreat · 23/09/2026 07:50

I’m a bit behind with the episodes in series two , but it’s obvious that Fleabag’s sister is dodgy as anything and they are all in trouble!
I need to catch up

PrincessScarlett · 23/09/2026 07:55

Yes I hope Mark Bonnar stays for the Christmas special. I just love how he acts without saying a word, all the little looks and body language. He's fantastic and very funny. When they all turned up in HIS office as it was a 'safe space' I was howling 🀣

I thought this, added to the fact they left the evidence there when they all rushed off.
It was such an otherwise unlikely place to share information and pass over the money. It has to be relevant.

TheSmellOfSea · 23/09/2026 21:34

Off topic but this looks good with Mark Bonnar

Thznk for that @TheSmellOfSea
Ashley is in the latest Shetland and Mark is ex Shetland.

PrincessScarlett · 24/09/2026 08:33

Excited for finale tonight but gutted it's the finale as I really love Ludwig. I'm guessing not everything will be tied up as we have the Christmas special. Presumably James remains missing otherwise the premise of the show is gone.

NewAgeNewMe · 24/09/2026 08:47

Looking forward to being able to discuss it.

So if cctv caught Joanne why didn't it catch them at the chiefs house as well and peering through the Window

So funny at end when she reveals all on the phone after being told to shush

Amazing shot to the head via a braces - an inch to the side and missed

So no real closer to the truth and where James is

And did Joanne run his daughter over to shush him
