David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

Actually ep 6 is crap if I'm honest. Terrible ending. Don't watch it. πŸ˜‰

I agree. Totally terrible. You might as well watch it with the Christmas special 😜

NewAgeNewMe · 19/09/2026 10:33

Omg
I forgot there is a Christmas special
<cries happy tears>

I really wish they cast and styled Lucy better. Maybe Olivia Colman was too expensive.

I agree about the casting of Lucy but suspect Colman would have been even more annoying with that β€œoh gosh me!” script. I don’t know whether she chooses roles with self absorbed and unlikeable women but AMM does play a lot of them.

TheSmellOfSea · 19/09/2026 11:48

Oh I love Anna ❀️ That uncertain grin she does is fab.

True.
At least in "Motherland" and "Line of Duty" I felt okay disliking her character.
In "Ludwig" I keep thinking I must be missing something appealing about her, otherwise why did James marry her and why is John so fond of/in love with her.
They're both obviously bright and I'd have thought that having some wittering, self-absorbed person around would be very annoying.
This is just a by-the-by and I've forgotten, but did she work outside of the home before the story started?

TheSmellOfSea · 19/09/2026 12:50

I keep wondering how she's coping for money?

NewAgeNewMe · 19/09/2026 13:25

I’m not sure how likeable I’d be in her shoes. I suspect not very much.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/09/2026 13:36

Yes there is a Xmas special

I love Lucy. I guess I'm seeing something different as I don't find her unlikeable at all.

She's quirky and irritating and the perfect best friend for John. The bickering and platonic chemistry between them is brilliant. I can see exactly what they were like as children as they are still very much childlike in their modern day friendship.

We don't know what James's personality is to know if they are suited as husband and wife but presumably he is a little like John but more confident. Matt Neville referred to James being a puzzle solver like John and that they were similar.

TheSmellOfSea · 19/09/2026 14:22

@PrincessScarlett I do too. I think she's very clever.

We were wondering the same.

James is missing, but - is he still on the payroll? He should have been sacked for not turning up for work, but has that happened? There's no mention of anything that way.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/09/2026 16:44

"Looked like Mandy was aware her dad was corrupt and tried to report him so perhaps didn't have the greatest relationship with him."
I'm not sure about Ziegler. In the scene with Matt Neville, Matt asked if he was threatening him and Ziegler responded that he was not threatening him, he was warning him. What if that was the truth?

Ziegler could have become suspicious of the Kempers, as Chief Constable he'd have come into contact with them at official events. Since he was aware of Matt Neville's interest, he'd have been aware of James' interest too. He might have asked Mandy to pass information to James, calculating (wrongly) that her contacting James would have escaped the Kemper's notice. And since he warned Matt to disappear, he could also have warned James.

I don't believe the 'ritual killing every 10 years' conspiracy theory. I think it's more likely Joanne deliberately killed the first time, and every subsequent killing is an attempt to cover it up.

She’s a photographer (freelance I think?) and has a traditional dark room in the house where she develops her films. She doesn’t use digital cameras.
I sometimes get irritated by the her gurning and grimacing because it’s become pantomime-ish. However, I thought the episode with the poisoned soy sauce was also a bit too pantomime-y also. I couldn’t see the point of murdering someone to prevent them getting promoted if you the murderer was going to end up in prison anyway for doing it. Surely even a psychopath wouldn’t leave a napkin full of evidence there at the table. The supporting cast at these murders seem far too dim witted to be ever able to solve anything and I feel like I’m watching The β€˜Comic Strip presents’ half the time but less funny. I do know someone like Lucy in real life! It’s hard for me to disassociate the character on screen from that person, they are identical. I am enjoying the show, but I think it could be a lot better. I’d like to see more from Lucy’s son. I want him to show some brilliance.

Very true re Ziegler. Matt Neville said Ziegler looked terrified rather than terrifying or something like that. He may have been set up as the corrupt officer by whoever the big baddie is. I'd like to think Ziegler isn't corrupt. For Russell's sake. But I still think Ziegler was aware all along that James was John.

HatStickBoots · 19/09/2026 17:40

Agreed. Ziegler definitely knew James wasn’t John. The clues came from the actor’s performance and direction with camera shots and close ups.

PrincessScarlett · 19/09/2026 18:50

I wonder if Zeigler has left an encrypted message or clue for John. That would be good.

We still don't know if Ziegler was suspended or anything - they first claimed he was on holiday. Regardless - what has he been doing with his time? Could he have spent it getting details / documents together to pass to John?

Agree. There's plenty we don't know. Is Matt Neville in touch with James? He surely knows more than he's letting on.
