David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

Why is the politician getting people murdered ?
Sorry to be dim , but I didn’t get it completely last night !

WhiskerPatrol · 25/09/2026 11:04

Yes, I am also confused about JK's motives for all this! It all seems a bit odd now - I enjoyed the episode, but the ending felt like a bit of an anti-climax.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2026 11:13

It had that β€˜ us against the world’ type ending and at least carol isn’t a baddie ( unless she is really and it’s a ruse ?) but I think she is on their side.
The rest I am confused about. David Mitchell playing his brother on the phone was funny ! It was his voice.

I watch a lot of dramas and get a bit confused with two many twists.

Kemper keeps on getting people killed to cover up her involvement in the original death. Sinclair, Mandy, Zeigler, Holly, the guy in prison who killed Holly, the so called burglar were all killed because they had the potential to expose Kemper and ruin her ambition to be prime minister.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2026 11:37

Princess, thanks! Makes sense now.

PrincessScarlett · 25/09/2026 12:01

I don't think Kemper set out to kill so many but it has spiralled out of control.

Was the guy in prison for killing Holly killed?

Was the guy in prison for killing Holly killed?

Yes, I'm pretty sure he was. Now I'm doubting myself! πŸ˜‚ After Russell and Lucy had been to visit him separately. So presumably he was paid by 'someone' to kill Holly and needed silencing.

PrincessScarlett · 25/09/2026 14:56

I remember Lucy and John being suspicious of Russell because of it.

My mistake. Adam Newsome (killer of Holly Pinder) is alive in prison. I swear he was killed! Obviously too many deaths and getting confused πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I believe it was the conspiracy blogger who was killed in prison after his mum was visited.

Ah yes, thank you. That's the one.

I thought the conspiracy blogger (sinclair) was killed and the burglar, whose mum Lucy visited, was framed for sinclairs murder and he was killed in prison but made to look like suicide.

AndresyFiorella · 25/09/2026 18:06

It was the burglar who was framed for Sinclair's murder that was killed in prison (presented as suicide). Sinclair was murdered at home (presented as a botched burglary)

diddl · 25/09/2026 18:31

So was James a bad policeman who easily missed stuff as Matt Neville said?

Presumably Radley is a baddie?

Yes that what what Matt Neville was implying, that he was the one who worked things out and James took the credit.

I'm assuming that James worked with Carter but it can't have been for long as Carter was Nevilles replacement. Presumably Neville and James disappeared around the same time.

moto748e · 25/09/2026 19:12

What happened to Matt Neville? He wasn't mentioned in the last ep, as far as I recall.

diddl · 25/09/2026 19:17

Hadn't Matt Neville been relocated by Zeigler?

But had been more or less in hiding since instead?

BessMarvin · 25/09/2026 22:39

What I'm confused about is, if she was killing people to cover up previous murders, why did she kill the people she originally killed that she then needed to cover up?

Shinyandnew1 · 25/09/2026 23:18

I’m presuming Lucy (and James) have paid off the mortgage on their lovely house and are fine for money though?! He’s β€˜resigned’ and presumably isn’t receiving a salary or pension and she doesn’t appear to be working (for money) at all?!

moto748e · 25/09/2026 23:23

There's lots of TV series where people seem to exist very well on fresh air!

PrincessScarlett · 25/09/2026 23:44

@moto748e @diddl Matt Neville was last seen in episode 5. Russell met with him in the sushi bar where the murder happened. Russell gave Matt a large amount of money in return for evidence on the Sinclair case and Matt said he was going to buy a caravan in Devon (?) and had got a job lined up as a security guard.

Didn’t he take his Β£10k and go any buy a caravan
