Am I the only person to feel totally gutted / disappointed / sad … at Amandaland Christmas special ? … I LOVE all the motherland and ALand episodes and this was just awful. Or is that just me?

OP posts:

I liked Motherland and Amandaland but not keen on this Christmas special. I got the jokes they just were not that funny, in my opinion. Felt a bit like the characters were just reading their lines. Although Lucy Punch, Joanna Lumley and Saunders were great. I thought JS character was good, believable and I liked the different setting. I don't know, it just felt a bit flat.

I’ve been looking forward to this, just sitting down to watch it now. Well, lying down! Ushered out our last guests, the fire is still roaring and I’ve been looking forward to them leaving so I can watch it 😂

andIsaid · 26/12/2025 02:08

Well, I just watched it.

I enjoyed it! I like the dynamics between them all.

Loved that she had to go in the van!

I find the actor who plays Amanda really funny, Lumley and Saunders are just great and how bloody cool to see women that age in a relationship and not have it about a man or messed up parenting.

Very refreshing - there are three generations of females in that show.

I vote - GREAT!

springintoaction2 · 26/12/2025 06:14

Meh - it was okay I guess. But did expect it to be better.

I think I like Motherland better....

ThePure · 26/12/2025 06:25

We all watched it in our house and laughed a lot. I really enjoyed seeing Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders and Lucy Punch. I thought they were great. I thought Jennifer had that kind of ageing, jolly hockey sticks horsey lady down very well.

Aluna · 26/12/2025 07:56

I really enjoyed it but I’m not a regular watcher, my DD was watching so I joined in. Never got on with Motherland. Amanda could totally be Mick Jagger’s DD and Joanna Lumley could so have had an affair with him.

TheaBrandt1 · 26/12/2025 08:00

Felt it was too short were left wanting more - which I guess is a good sign!

topcat2014 · 26/12/2025 08:00

"I can only find the crispy towels you use for the dogs" from motherland is all over my socials

justforthis · 26/12/2025 08:00

Yes, very disappointing. Jennifer was much like a lot of characters she has played, which I found really dull. Very little effort went in to that script.

LoudSnoringDog · 26/12/2025 08:06

I loved Motherland but hated Amandaland

Yeah and I was musing that if Julia had dogs, I don't think we ever saw them?

curiositykilledthiscat · 26/12/2025 08:18

I know the second series is currently filming and I hope different writers are involved.

Jennifer was much like a lot of characters she has played, which I found really dull.

Yes - like I said, her casting was a lazy and boring decision.

Aluna · 26/12/2025 08:20

I enjoyed the Jennifer - Joanna reunion personally.

I don’t like JS head wobbling, deadpan, unsmiling style that she does for every character. I actually thought she was pretty convincing in this.
The script writing was good. It’s hard to write everyone have a lovely Christmas and still be a bit barbed.

My only reservation is that Amanda is becoming less of an annoying snob. She’s mellowing which is dull.

TennisWithDeborah · 26/12/2025 08:52

It was great, I thought. A few good laughs, especially around the Mick stuff. I am always happy to see prime time drama with talented women leads.

My main criticism is that it was a bit short.

Fixydodah · 26/12/2025 08:55

I can’t watch this now since seeing the actress on that reality shark swimming programme. Her acting isn’t a stretch in Amandaland, she doesn’t seem that far off from her real self. I only lasted 10 minutes and switched it off.

tonyhawks23 · 26/12/2025 09:08

It was brilliant,Jennifer Saunders was brilliant, complete comedy genius.

Shmoigel · 26/12/2025 09:17

I loved it. The can of Coca Cola with the ring pull was genius

AngelsWithSilverWings · 26/12/2025 09:23

I loved it. Watched it with DH who has only watched Motherland and he laughed out loud quite a few times. Nice seeing Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley together.

Allaboutthecats · 26/12/2025 09:30

Loved it here 'How do you titillate an ocelot?'
Going to be our new Xmas joke

And the out of date coke. Like going to my mum's

Yes could easily have been an hour long

littleburn · 26/12/2025 09:58

I really liked it. The Mick Jagger hand on hip and clap made me laugh out loud and Jennifer Saunders was brilliant. I do think people need to accept it’s not supposed to be Motherland under another name though!

She definitely had a dog. It ate the pate and she scooped the top of it off. Would not put that past my dog obsessed MIL tbh.

That was Joanie’s dog in the 2025 Amandaland Christmas special, PP is asking about the dogs the main character Julia might have had in the 2022 Motherland Christmas Special.

Forcedoutoflurking · 26/12/2025 10:08

We loved it in our house, all laughed including dh who's never watched it or Motherland.
