Am I the only person to feel totally gutted / disappointed / sad … at Amandaland Christmas special ? … I LOVE all the motherland and ALand episodes and this was just awful. Or is that just me?

OP posts:

Ok, agree Motherland was better though pleased it was not flogged to death.

Boxing Day evening included worse, the misery of Eastenders and the three word argument in favour of BBC abolition, Mrs Browns Boys.

It was shite. I know nothing about mick jagger so didn’t get any references. I thought it was really boring and was so looking forward to it. I don’t think anything can beat the first motherland Christmas special

For real? You know nothing about Mick Jagger? Ok.

I mean, my 17 year old son didn't get those references but he's indifferent to music in any form really, and I've obviously failed in my musical education because he didn't get the jokes there. But he's 17...

GlomOfNit · 26/12/2025 10:29

I thought it was a little underwhelming but not THAT bad! Christmas specials for loved comedies are often a bit cloying. I agree that Amandaland lacks the amazing cast of Motherland but that's always the case.

That was Joanie’s dog in the 2025 Amandaland Christmas special, PP is asking about the dogs the main character Julia might have had in the 2022 Motherland Christmas Special.

Ah sorry. Misunderstood.

ThePure · 26/12/2025 10:35

After we watched Amandaland we watched the Royle family Christmas special. Now that’s a Christmas special! Even though the references are dated it’s still really funny and my teenagers who had never seen it were all laughing as much as their parents.

Comedycook · 26/12/2025 10:39

Well I absolutely loved it... thought it was really good. Loved Jennifer Saunders character and the filthy, dilapidated country home 😂a cliche that is referred often to on Mumsnet!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/12/2025 10:45

I much prefer Amandaland to Motherland, and I enjoyed this.

I broadly liked it but the Mick Jagger subplot felt odd and unnecessary.

I don’t know anything about mick jagger for real. (Would be an odd thing to lie about). I’m in my 30s. I mean I know who he is but nothing about him
because I’ve never had an interest in him. My sister in her 20s also had no clue about the mick jagger references…

23doorsdown · 26/12/2025 11:49

I liked it, thought Jennifer's character was spot on.

FromageTime · 26/12/2025 11:53

We gave up half way through.

Well, I just watched it.

I enjoyed it! I like the dynamics between them all.

Loved that she had to go in the van!

I find the actor who plays Amanda really funny, Lumley and Saunders are just great and how bloody cool to see women that age in a relationship and not have it about a man or messed up parenting.

Very refreshing - there are three generations of females in that show.

I vote - GREAT!

"Women that age in a relationship"?

Twinkletwinkly · 26/12/2025 12:00

I loved it. Jennifer Saunders slotted in perfectly and was hilarious. I hope we see more of her in the next season of Amandaland. Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are a great partnership.
Absolutely fabulous dahling!

NoMumLeftBehindLiz · 26/12/2025 12:11

It’s the posh parlour games that no one outside the family has ever heard of that got me wetting myself:
Are you there Moriarty?
Ho Ha Hee?
The Minister’s Cat?
Pass the Slipper?
You must know Hot Cockles? Hot Cockles?!
Elephant’s Foot?

Missingthesea · 26/12/2025 12:31

The Minister's Cat is/was definitely a real parlour game. The first person says, for example, "The Minister's cat is an auspicious cat." The next person thinks of an adjective beginning with B, and says something like "The minister's cat is an auspicious and bellicose cat." The next person has to think of an adjective beginning with C and adds that on to the list, such as "The Minister's cat is an auspicious, bellicose and crafty cat."
And so on through the alphabet, with people having to remember a longer and longer list.

Yes I knew The Minister’s Cat. I think Are you there Moriarty is real too.

I havent watched but I dont have much hope

Two doors down was also shite, as much as its my fave show 😄

I am so glad to hear you say that as I was so looking forward to it and then just didn't feel it. Cathys jibes were all boring, Christine wasn't as funny and Gordon was extra annoying. The best series recently imo was the one where Anne Marie replaced Cathy and I really think the Xmas special would've worked much better with her instead.

Sadly I agree about Two Doors Down. I usually love it but I felt that one fell flat. I didn’t find it funny at all. Really disappointed when I watched it as I was really looking forward to it.

They all are, other than Elephant’s Foot - never heard of that one.

susiedaisy1912 · 26/12/2025 13:32

Just watched it and loved it.

TheChosenTwo · 26/12/2025 13:34

I found it a bit flat, fine but not funny, I don’t think I laughed once.
i loved motherland and the dynamic between Amanda and Anne, I also enjoyed amandaland with the new additions but didn’t like Della and Fi so didn’t miss them in the Christmas special. But the dynamics just felt a bit off in this and the relationships didn’t feel authentic to the main series.
It was okay but not one I’ll watch again. I also found two doors down a bit meh which was quite a disappointment as it’s one of my favourite things on tv.

gmgnts · 26/12/2025 13:35

I absolutely loved it and laughed out loud A LOT!

gmgnts · 26/12/2025 13:36

But I agree that Two Doors Down was a disappointment - it was last year, too, as I remember.
