Am I the only person to feel totally gutted / disappointed / sad … at Amandaland Christmas special ? … I LOVE all the motherland and ALand episodes and this was just awful. Or is that just me?

OP posts:

Not as sharp as usual episodes, but I loved Jennifer Saunders character and it was good fun all in all. Christmas specials can be very hit or miss, so I’ll give a bit of grace for this one not being quite as hilarious as the series.

It was rubbish. As was 2 doors down.

The Xmas TV has been awful.

Cautiouswalrus · 25/12/2025 23:21

I have found all the motherland / Amandaland episodes a bit of a slow burn, they seem to improve after a few times of watching.
This one was alright , but the best bits were the few clips they released on social media, the rest was a bit of a letdown.

lemoncrisp · 25/12/2025 23:29

We loved it and laughed a lot at the Jennifer Saunders character and her dog. Great to see Saunders and Lumley together again.

I agree - some of the better jokes would have been funny if I hadn’t already seen the punchline several times in the trailer.

I loved it! Way better than expected. I loved the over the top poshness. Even my DH was laughing out loud.

Pusstachio · 25/12/2025 23:33

It’s Chile

Rainallnight · 25/12/2025 23:35

I really enjoyed it. Thought it was perfect for a Christmas special.

Redwinedaze · 25/12/2025 23:39

We really enjoyed it and found it funny.

Cherrysherbet · 25/12/2025 23:47

We loved it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/12/2025 23:49

I enjoyed it

Bellavida99 · 25/12/2025 23:56

I really liked it and I’m really fussy about what I find funny and entertaining so I’m really surprised. Jennifer Saunders character was spot on as a crumbling aristocrat with the out of date food, dog everywhere and filthy house.

WingingItSince1973 · 25/12/2025 23:56

I loved it and laughed a few times. Can't wait for series 2. I am such a big Motherland fan I really thought a spin off would be annoying but I actually like it and can separate the two shows.

dancegirl1983 · 25/12/2025 23:57

I thought it was great! Jennifer Saunders’ character was so over the top, she was hilarious - and what a treat to see her and Joanna Lumley together again. It fizzled out a bit at the end but overall I liked it. Though nothing will EVER come close to the first season of Motherland!

Foxcubforest · 26/12/2025 00:02

It was great!

lovescats3 · 26/12/2025 00:03

It was ab fab ! Watched it with husband and sons, we enjoyed it and all laughed, looking forward to next series

itsobviousright · 26/12/2025 00:17

Ach, it made me chuckle a few times, there's worse things to watch for sure

Moveoverdarlin · 26/12/2025 00:23

Really enjoyed it.

obvs the first motherland Christmas episode is the gold standard but this is a different show really so can’t be compared

That episode is maybe one of the funniest episodes of TV ever made

namechangetheworld · 26/12/2025 00:37

Motherland is a comedy gem, one of my absolute favourites. Amandaland just feels so flat and forced in comparison. Amanda just isn't a funny character without Julia and Liz to play off of, and they changed Anne's entire personality seemingly for no reason.

DataColour · 26/12/2025 00:47

It was great! Both teenagers (who did get the ha ha joke as we have one in our local park) and DH and I laughed quite a bit.
Love both motherland and Amandaland. Great to see JSs and JL together again and I introduced DD to Ab Fab by watching an episode of that too tonight.

RenoDakota · 26/12/2025 00:50

I loved it. And the Mick Jagger references were very funny, especially "You can't always get what you want".

Twonewcats · 26/12/2025 01:10

Smallinthesmoke · 25/12/2025 23:08

We liked it in this house, though the teens didn't get the Mick Jagger or the haha jokes. Amanda Punch is such a clever actress- when she came into the hallway in her leather trousers in the style of Mick Jagger on stage 😂
Oh and the "damp, dogs and desperation" line!

Amanda doing the Mick Jagger hand-clap/strut in the hallway was really brilliantly done 😆

CurrentHun · 26/12/2025 01:10

I just love Lucy Punch endlessly whatever she’s in, and her physical comedy is so awesome.
When she came in and out in her flouncy sleeves while Anne and Mal had just been looking at the Jagger photo … gold

CurrentHun · 26/12/2025 01:11

Cross post! Exactly that
