Am I the only person to feel totally gutted / disappointed / sad … at Amandaland Christmas special ? … I LOVE all the motherland and ALand episodes and this was just awful. Or is that just me?

OP posts:

I really enjoyed it, I’ve watched it several times!

Very pedestrian. Cute dog.

We had a ha-ha on the boundary of our school grounds, so we were all told about them cos we had to cross them on cross-country runs.

Watchable but very average

I saw this thread title before I watched the show and I was half expecting Amanda's mum to be found hanging in the barn at the end, or something equally horrible! 'Gutted' is a bit strong really. As a Christmas special I think it's very much on a par with the show itself - perfectly serviceable although not a classic of the genre. It's no 'Christmassy Ted' or 'The Christmas Lunch Incident', but it was still enjoyable.

I liked it more on my second watch. Seeing Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley together was fun - the scene between them in the barn was nice. I liked Jennifer's character a lot. The Mick Jagger stuff was funny. The dog was cute. I still have a big crush on Mal and need him and Amanda to get together next series.

I watched the two Motherland Christmas specials on i player on Monday night. Love Meg jumping on Amandas outdoor Christmas tree and shouting TIMBER and eating the wreath

DontFallInTheHaHa · 31/12/2025 01:31

I loved it

Those of us who have a posh eccentric old aunt in a stuffy damp freezing house full of relics from the 70’s can understand how brilliantly observed it was and I loved seeing Saunders and Lumley together again

Even named my username after it!

Empress13 · 31/12/2025 01:48

How does Joanna Lumley not age she’s nearly 80! Can’t say I loved it but I did laugh out loud at some of it. Love Ann’s character

Just remembered the “oh I did sleep with Mick, a couple of times actually, but not in a way that you can get pregnant”

I mean, standards are abominably high if that is not titillating you all 🤣🤣

Agree with this 😂😂

I've met her ,it was over 20 years ago and she wears a LOT of very thick make up and has deep wrinkles. She looks incredible though,I think good teeth and hair really help plus having a great figure .

I thought it was funny. I loved seeing the AbFabs back together 💛

This was just not funny at all. Didn't get any laughs from me!! ive loved Amandaland in the past but i agree there just wasnt any chemistry ! I love Jennifer Saunders but the plot about Mick Jagger was just a bit silly!

The whole thing is a bit silly!

I enjoyed it. It wasn’t amazing but I absolutely loved Jennifer Saunders character and made me feel a bit sad for Amanda who had missed out on the jollity for so many years. The laughter at the christmas cracker jokes was just what happened at our own Christmas lunch.

I have had a tough year and it struck the right note for me.

When they sung god save the king - absolutely tickled me 🤣

Joanna Lumley was AMAZING in that Christmas special. Her faces were hilarious all throughout 🤣 she a brilliant actress.

Yes she was brilliant. Lucy Punch was also amazing. I loved her expression when her mum said she slept with MJ but not in a way you could get pregnant!

champagnetrial · 31/12/2025 17:07

Ah I thought it was silly and sweet and frothy- a bit like a pavlova.

I liked the broad brushstrokes covering all the familial trauma. I loved Anne finally saying a big FU to parenting her needy family. I loved Eddie and Patsy reunited. And the pavlova face plant was just brilliant. I do appreciate a bit of physical comedy.

I was going to say there's not much depth they can fit into 30 mins, but actually, the Motherland Christmas special (Last Christmas) was also half an hour and I agree, seemed to have more 'meat' and nuance, but also had more characters.

That said, overall I thought this was a hit.

That Motherland Christmas special was awful - so depressing!

Agree that Eddie and Patsy reunited plus the pavlova face plant were the best bits.

I've watched it three times now and found it funnier every time.
The hide and seek bit with Mal and Amanda in the boiler cupboard when she's obsessing about Mick Jagger and he's nearly dying from heatstroke...
With the follow up of Joanie discovering them and thinking they've just had sex. "Ding dong!"
Mal on the carpet, fainting.
Joanie, "Oh, are you finished?"
Mal, "Could I have some water please?"
😁

deeahgwitch · 02/01/2026 17:31

I just thought it was stupid.
The children hiding, drinking so much alcohol and not falling around drunk afterwards.
I mean there’s suspension of disbelief and……..
I’m sorry for the writers but it just was pathetic. A waste of great actors.

Didn't you see the end where she fell face first in the pavlova as she was so pissed? 🤣

deeahgwitch · 02/01/2026 23:36

i did ! But the children were knocking back the drink too.

Notheretoday · 02/01/2026 23:40

I don't like the way that the mother character has changed so much. I really liked the narcissistic and acerbic version from Motherland, not this relatively lovely Gan-Gan in Amandaland.

It's comedy not a documentary!

I thought it was the funniest thing I had seen for a long time - if you have watched Ab Fab you would have seen Jen Saunders and Jo Lumley together - comedy gold, the end scene was hilarious.
