Am I the only person to feel totally gutted / disappointed / sad … at Amandaland Christmas special ? … I LOVE all the motherland and ALand episodes and this was just awful. Or is that just me?

OP posts:

obvs the first motherland Christmas episode is the gold standard but this is a different show really so can’t be compared

Doubledenim305 · 25/12/2025 22:47

I loved it. Best one of all the Amandaland episodes. Burst out laughing loads of times.. brilliant. Awesome. Don't understand the negative comments.

I keep forgetting she has others.
Didn't she have triplets?

Yes. In the Motherland Christmas special she had two babies and a toddler, all in a three seater buggy.

Snackpocket · 25/12/2025 22:48

Just watched it, I liked it. Jennifer Saunders was fab!

Summatoruvva · 25/12/2025 22:48

It was good! The reveal about the photo was hilarious.

PersephoneSmith · 25/12/2025 22:49

I thought it was great. Lots of laugh out loud moments and the Jagger premise was hilarious.

I thought it was very good but not as good as other Amandaland episodes. One thing I find very hard to swallow is that Anne has four kids but only Darius ever gets mentioned. Considering Motherland was all about the child care conundrum, it's weird that her younger kids have been blurred out completely.

Motherland was an ensemble show about motherhood generally, Amandaland is definitely all about the main character readjusting post divorce and total lifestyle change.

@Coralinescat Anne had a baby and then got pregnant straight away with toddlers, as she’s coming out the butchers in the second Christmas special and show finale she has the triple buggy. I think there’s a photo of them up in Anne’s living room.

Sunshineandoranges · 25/12/2025 22:52

I found it very disappointing.

Miranda65 · 25/12/2025 22:52

I thought it was great - lots of laughs. The reunion of Lumley and Saunders showed that they haven't lost their special chemistry, and you just know that there are still women out there exactly like Jennifer Saunders' character.
I just read a 5 star review of it, too!

Countrymaid · 25/12/2025 22:53

Jennifer Saunders overacting… not funny. I also went back and watched Last Christmas, Motherland on iPlayer..much funnier.

KidsDoBetter · 25/12/2025 22:54

Loved JS and the setting - but the gags and story lines were a bit meh sadly. Wanted to like it more than I did tbh.

EllaPaella · 25/12/2025 22:55

I loved it. Much better than Motherland which barely makes me laugh. Julia is actually very annoying and totally unlikeable- Amanda is funny, fucked up and selfish but a much warmer character. I loved Jennifer Saunders in this, and the Rolling Stones references were very funny.

WonderfulSmith · 25/12/2025 22:56

I really liked it, but then I know people exactly like Jennifer Saunders’ character.

FrogsLoveRain · 25/12/2025 22:56

It was okay enough. Easy watching on Christmas night. Agree with pp that last year's Outnumbered was probably one of the worst things I've ever watched.

Fleetheart · 25/12/2025 22:57

I enjoyed it; contrived yes, but funny and fun!

Scrowy · 25/12/2025 22:59

Ah I loved it but the Joan character was rather close to home so that's perhaps why!

Beautiful old fashioned female led comedy.

CheeseWisely · 25/12/2025 23:00

It was no Motherland but we enjoyed it anyway. Jennifer Saunders a great cast for the mad Aunt and I liked seeing a bit of softness in Amanda’s Mum finally.

Clementine12 · 25/12/2025 21:56

I enjoyed it. Laughed out loud at a few bits - Ann, plus the mick jagger references

Same.

PuttingOnMyPositivePants · 25/12/2025 23:02

JS and JL together will always be a winner for me so I enjoyed it! Much better than two doors down which is usually brilliant. That was so disappointing

FastLion · 25/12/2025 23:02

I enjoyed it, I wasnt expecting much but thought Jennifer Saunders was a funny addition- it entertained me for half an hour on Xmas day.

onlymethen · 25/12/2025 23:06

Watched with my 25 year old daughter tucked up in bed and really enjoyed it.

Smallinthesmoke · 25/12/2025 23:08

We liked it in this house, though the teens didn't get the Mick Jagger or the haha jokes. Amanda Punch is such a clever actress- when she came into the hallway in her leather trousers in the style of Mick Jagger on stage 😂
Oh and the "damp, dogs and desperation" line!

TeideHeart · 25/12/2025 23:09

I thought it was boring.

AtIusvue · 25/12/2025 23:14

It was ok. The series was much stronger.

Two doors down was bloody awful.

Vol8fdop · 25/12/2025 23:15

Really enjoyed it.
