Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

We're 2 episodes in and loving it! Like you we were hooked from the start. Really good cast and interesting characters.

Panicmode1 · 30/05/2025 13:41

Started it last night. Only got one episode in, but hooked by the end of Ep 1!!

cordelia16 · 30/05/2025 13:44

I love it so far - made it halfway through ep3 before I started feeling tired (approaching 1am). It's definitely not the kind of show you can half-watch, so I'll continue tonight at an earlier time.

Matthew Goode is fantastic, and I love the entire cast.

Lottapianos · 30/05/2025 14:02

Was considering giving this a go, sounds like it's definitely worth a watch 👍

ghostyslovesheets · 30/05/2025 14:04

I’m 3 episodes in - it’s really good

GentleJadeOP · 30/05/2025 14:05

We watched 2 episodes last night, excellent!

Rollergirl11 · 30/05/2025 14:10

Watched 2 episodes last night. It’s very different and an interesting watch. Surreal at times and sometimes certain characters wardrobe and hair seem to be at odds with what we assume is present day setting. We stopped at 2 but could have watched more!

Can we talk theories? 🧐

Reallybadidea · 30/05/2025 14:12

I watched 2 episodes last night on my own (husband away). Trying to decide whether to watch a third now while I do some ironing or give him the chance to catch up 🤔

Reallybadidea · 30/05/2025 14:13

Oh and I totally have a theory on who the masked gunman is, based on the eyes, but not sure whether that would count as a spoiler!

HilaryThorpe · 30/05/2025 14:16

I read all the Jussi Adler Olsen Department Q books over Christmas and thought they were brilliant. I struggled a bit with the transition from Denmark to Scotland in the Netflix version, but I do think it is very good and true to the original.

SiobahnRoy · 30/05/2025 14:16

2 episodes in, loving it and recommending to everyone!

squashyhat · 30/05/2025 14:26

Thanks OP. Now on my list to watch.

WhereShallWeGo · 30/05/2025 17:04

Loving it so far!!! Ep 7 and already dreading finishing 🙁 But great to hear that these are based on books - I will put that on the list

BlondeFool · 30/05/2025 17:05

Great! Just finishing The Better Sister so will start after

hattie43 · 30/05/2025 17:14

I’ve just started episode 1 , not grabbing me if I’m honest . Will persevere though

WolfFoxHare · 30/05/2025 17:16

I’m two episodes in and absolutely gripped so far!

WobblyLondoner · 30/05/2025 18:03

I watched the first episode last night.

Absolutely loved it (great cast, great setting) until the big reveal at the end. I hope you know what I mean if you’ve seen it - not the first shock about chronology but the second one. At the point I said to DP oh bloody hell it’s gone all Scandi-noir - not realising that it was in fact a remake of a previous Scandi series. Kind of the Queensferry Bridge …

It somehow seems so much more deeply implausible when it’s in your neck of the woods as opposed to another part of the world.

Will keep on in the hope that our enthusiasm perks up in episode 2 …

I was irrationally angry that his boss spent the budget on new hardware and he got a laptop.

tennissquare · 30/05/2025 21:43

Loving this, 3 episodes in. Best show I have watched for a while.

ghostyslovesheets · 30/05/2025 22:10

It’s a bit like Slow Horses in the police! Not as good but still good

CaptainFuture · 30/05/2025 22:14

Was meant to be having an early night... now on ep 2...

LittleLlama · 31/05/2025 10:39

I am really enjoying this. Now six episodes in (really hope the ending doesn’t disappoint).

The first episode was very much about laying out the foundations and a friend who watched it found it a little plodding but I loved how they built it up. I also really liked the way that they show the victim being forced to solve the mystery from the inside, while the police do the same from the outside - you learn so much from seeing both narratives. My only issue is the incrediblely high level of angst and ego of so many of the characters, which can be quite tiring to watch.

Reallybadidea · 31/05/2025 13:43

It feels like a cross between Sherlock and Unforgotten with a sprinkle of Morse

HilaryThorpe · 31/05/2025 13:55

Having got further in to the Netflix version, I think they have departed quite a long way from the books. It would be interesting to know why. Has anyone else read them?
