Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

Same.
Really hope there will be further series. I particularly loved the Akram character.

Yes but any other cold cases or does the hidden chamber story go on for 9 eps? I seem to recall the Danish one had a separate really disturbing case with missing children.

There are no other cold cases. The Merrit story lasts 9 episodes.

Are all 9 eps about the abduction and the chamber or do they do other cases?

All one case

I read all the Jussi Adler Olsen Department Q books over Christmas and thought they were brilliant. I struggled a bit with the transition from Denmark to Scotland in the Netflix version, but I do think it is very good and true to the original.

I found the first episode slow and also struggled with the transition to Scotland. I'm a big fan of Jussi Adler Olsen as well and it was so long ago that I read this book that I was a bit lost to start with. I am only two episodes in and will watch some more tonight.

It was good seeing Matthew Goode not playing an upper class toff for once.

@Gloriia there are more cases than this. The author has written several Dept Q books.

The more I watch, the further they have got from the book. It is good television, but I am having to try and forget the original which had an excellent plot.

Just finished binge watching it over 2 days. I loved it and it had me gripped throughout. Such a treat to find something to immerse myself in.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/06/2025 19:00

Best thing I’ve watched in ages, was so stressed watching the last episode!!

Role on the next series 😊

usedtobeaylis · 01/06/2025 19:20

What a great cast!

jay55 · 01/06/2025 20:04

I’m on episode 4 and finding it quite stressful. Amazing cast though, great performances all round.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 01/06/2025 20:21

Just watched the first episode. There aren't that many options for the kidnapper at this stage. It's very well made but I don't really enjoy "punish a woman" victim plotlines so not sure I CBA with 9 episodes(!) if they're not moving on to something else. Will give the next episode a go and see.

But I am enjoying his boss.

BG2015 · 01/06/2025 20:23

We’ve just finished it!
brilliant series

Yes that's what I was getting at earlier. I've enjoyed 2 eps but even with the previous shooting investigation it would seem a but much to observe a women being tortured for the the full 9 episodes. I'm sure the Danish Dep Q had more of a mix.

Yes I hate the torture scenes. Why is it always women trapped in bunkers like this and never men? I always feel there is an element of male titillation and it makes me deeply uncomfortable.

countingthedays945 · 01/06/2025 21:26

Finished it. Best thing I’ve seen MG in. At first I thought it may be a poor ‘slow horses’ but it grew on me.

RampantIvy · 01/06/2025 23:06

I don't like the torture scenes and have to look away. Unfortunately, this is typical of Jussi Adler Olssen's storylines.

Peachy2005 · 02/06/2025 02:30

Just binged the last 3 - god it was great. Yes a tough watch but definitely want more. The last bit was surprisingly upbeat considering the rest: it was possibly the music. Loved Carl and Akram and all of them actually - hope they come back soon xx

interesting that it is a Danish writer

It gets better and better. Episode one I wasn’t very sure about it but it does improve. I find the scenes on the underground bunker almost impossible to watch. It’s very disturbing. Also I really don’t think we need the f word in every sentence. Literally every sentence. It doesn’t add anything.

Could have written this myself , totally agree . The amount of F’ing is unnecessary and distracting..

mizu · 02/06/2025 06:33

I’m starting it tonight!

mrsnjw · 02/06/2025 15:09

Really enjoying this! I’m halfway through. I hope they make a season two.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 02/06/2025 15:29

Yes it’s good, I’m on episode 4. Goodness Edinburgh looks a bit of a dump though.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 02/06/2025 15:51

Watched it, now want series 2!! Love the parking 😆

Edinburgh is beautiful. A lot is shot in poor light or in the dark, and some of the shots aren't in the most scenic areas. I agree, if you don't know the city it doesn't look enticing. I hope if there is another series it will show Edinburgh in a better light with more outdoor shots. The problem is I suppose shooting in broad daylight in the more attractive areas would increase the cost significantly due to having to shut roads and clear pedestrians, also seek permission from the council. It's a huge big deal. Also it was shot in the winter which doesn't help. Its dark at 4pm and the weather is awful.

Kaiken · 02/06/2025 20:11

I am loving it. Watching episode 2 right now!!
