Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

Looking forward to starting on this. Mainly here for Kate Dickie, who is who I want to be when I grow up.
Is the Danish one also called Dept Q? Is it good?
There's also another pretty good Scandi drama with the same premise of a slightly shambling department set up to re-investigate cold cases, but I can't remember what it's called. The boss of the team had a daughter who died or went missing or something in one of the cases, which is his motivation for doing it.

I loved the Danish one, faster paced than this. The gloomy vibe of the basement the same and Akram character was just as interesting.

Was years ago though so other than remembering they had other cold cases I can't recall what happened 🤔.

only criticism is that there is a bit too much swearing for me. Felt like it was in every single sentence in episode 5!
I know some in Scotland like to project the image that it’s part of Scot’s lexicon and it’s all good fun but no it’s not and not all us appreciate this.

Absolutely agree. It doesn’t add anything and it’s really irritating.

Tallisker · 03/06/2025 11:32

I hated the swearing too and I’m no prude (as an ex squaddie I am fluent in swear) but the use of the c word especially was absolutely horrible. Too many fs too.

Henry8thHoover · 03/06/2025 11:42

Finished it last night and thought it was really good.
Also noticed 3 GOT actors!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 03/06/2025 16:07

I recognised Moaning Myrtle's voice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Henderson

Tripthelightfantastical · 03/06/2025 16:24

I didn’t like ‘do your mother from behiind’ either. Absolutely rank and offensive. Also misogynistic.

Are you thinking of The Truth Will Out? Set in Sweden, used to be available on the Walter Presents section of Channel 4.

Haven't read the thread, two-thirds through the first ep, and I can't say I'm quite sold. It's a familiar plot, anyway, and I'm sure I've seen at least one of the Nikolaj Lie Kaas films from a decade or so ago. The pill-popping, misanthropic detective is hardly rare in fiction. But the script is way too much people cracking wise than they ever do IRL, which puts me off a little.

onceuponatimeinneverland · 03/06/2025 23:15

Just binging this. It's good and I'm loving the cast and the plot twists.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 03/06/2025 23:25

A little bit too much suspension of disbelief required for me to enjoy this, made worse by the usual "pardon?" moments whenever a fictional series is set somewhere you know intimately.

Interesting enough to waste an evening, but I probably wouldn't bother if they make a second series. The main character is an objectionable arse who would be out of the door in two minutes in any real life environment, and that's a bit of a cliche for "gritty" detective stuff anyway.

I thought there was actually less swearing than is normal for a lot of Scots, but the issue I have with it is the invective was in all the wrong places in the sentence structure, which made it totally incongruous, and that's why it seemed totally out of place and unwarranted, not the actual quantity and frequency of it. It sounded more like people who wouldn't normally swear swearing for the sake of trying to sound hard and intimidating, and making an arse of it, rather than people who just curse constantly because it's part of they way they communicate naturally. Oh, and the most incongruous thing is the completely incorrect use of the "C" word. When it is used, 99% of the time its as a term of endearment. Scots use totally different swear words to describe people they genuinely hold in disdain.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 04/06/2025 07:08

@XDownwiththissortofthingX that is not my experience at all regarding swearing. I have never heard the c word as a term of endearment.

You would enjoy The Black Forest Murders on Netflix. It's in German with subtitles and a straight down the line procedural with no gloomy backstories.

By the way, I think Morck is only popping pills because he's recovering from being shot not recreationally.

What, in Scotland specifically? That is very much my experience, from living in Glasgow for several years.

I've just finished the first episode of the Black Forest Murders. Its pretty good so far.

I love German procedurals! They are so meat-and-potatoes! i don't think I've seen Black Forest Murders or The Truth Will Out, though.

There's a couple of them, but they are cinema films. Pretty sure they've been on the BBC4 Saturday night slot in the past. I like Nikolaj Lie Kaas; he is very good, seen him in a few things.

I enjoyed it but it's strangely lacking in drama

In Scotland (especially Glasgow) it very much is a term of endearment!

ThatAgileCoralBird · 04/06/2025 10:56

Yes in Scotland. Nope, it’s not in my part of Scotland.
Perhaps it’s specific to Glasgow?

Might be.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 04/06/2025 16:31

It's not.

I'm east coast, and it's common here

ThatAgileCoralBird · 04/06/2025 17:07

East coast here too.
It will be social circle rather than regional.

APurpleSquirrel · 04/06/2025 17:13

DH & I watched the first 3 episodes last night & we’re enjoying it. Shocked to realise the actress who played Moaning Myrtle / the house keeper was 55 years old! She must have been in her late 20s-30s in HP?!
Loving Akram - he has a certain set of special skills doesn’t he?
& Matthew Goode is very good 😆

Om83 · 04/06/2025 17:23

I watched it entirely over Monday evening (until 1am) and then had nothing on Tuesday so finished it then! Can’t wait for the next series.

As it was raining and still had not much to do I then watched Missing You which was also fab.
