Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

The guy playing Akram; seen him a few things, he was very good as Davor the crime boss in the original series of Before We Die.

RampantIvy · 04/06/2025 17:56

Having read all the books I think they have done extremely well casting Morck and Akram's characters. It's as if both actors have read the books as well.

I think Connor Swindells would have made a good Morck, the character he played in Rogue Heroes was definitely Morck like.

I like his lodger he's very amusing.

Was strange to see Navid and Tam actors from Still Game.

moto748e · 04/06/2025 18:23

Just about all the Scots usual suspects were there! It only needed Dougie Henshall and David Tennant!

I hated the swearing too and I’m no prude (as an ex squaddie I am fluent in swear) but the use of the c word especially was absolutely horrible. Too many fs too.

Yes I found all the swearing really distracting and unnecessary .

DH & I watched the first 3 episodes last night & we’re enjoying it. Shocked to realise the actress who played Moaning Myrtle / the house keeper was 55 years old! She must have been in her late 20s-30s in HP?!
Loving Akram - he has a certain set of special skills doesn’t he?
& Matthew Goode is very good 😆

I want to know more about Akram's history ... or maybe I'm better off not knowing 🤔

East coast here too.
It will be social circle rather than regional.

The language didn't bother me although I rarely hear people using the F&C words in real life here in rural SW England.

Half of my family live in the Scottish highlands and they don't swear like that either - are those words more commonly used in cities perhaps?

I’m furious. I unsubscribed from Netflix in May, determined not to get drawn in again. Started watching this today at a friend’s house … Three episodes in and I’m wondering how I can possibly go home.

It’s so absorbing. And having found Matthew Goode an utter waste of my time in the execrable ’A Discovery of Witches’ (still watched it all, though) I’m astonished at how witty and attractive he seems in this.

I’m trying very hard not to think too hard about the bunker. Definitely the sort of thing I’d usually avoid watching. And I agree about the rather singular costuming and make up - but I guess there’s no reason why characters in TV police procedural should always look bland and samey. Some of the actors seem to be simply reading their lines aloud; but I’m enjoying the rhythm of the swearing.

Akram can come home with me.

MissConductUS · 04/06/2025 20:58

I'm on episode 8 and loving it.

I'm an American and found the Scottish accents in the show to be very mild and easily understood everything said. Did they tone down the accents for the show or not? I've watched other series set in the UK and had to turn on captions to understand everything.

moto748e · 04/06/2025 21:40

Accents vary a lot across Scotland. Middle-class Edinburgh accents are easily understood, the diction is very clear. In other parts of Scotland, non-locals might well find it hard. So it's more about the place, really.

I like Rose's style.

I'm only two episodes in and I have thoughts about the hairstyles. I know it's not set in the 80s but it feels like so many of the hairdos were transported directly from then. Special mention for DC Clark's hair, WTF is going on there?

I am quite gripped by the plot, but not enough to stay up any later as I have an early start tomorrow.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 04/06/2025 23:21

It's Edinburgh, if anything the hairdos were remarkably constrained compared to what you actually see walking the streets here.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 04/06/2025 23:21

Bloody love Matthew. It’s fab, he’s lush. Have just rewatched discovery of witches for the 4th time…sighs

Shock Now I'm curious, the last (only) time I was in Edinburgh was in the 90s when probably the whole world had interesting hair so it didn't stand out to me. I should go back for another look. Grin

Just finished it. Absolutely loved it. My favourite definitely Akram. The most innocent face, the mildest manners. Yet absolutely devastating ice cold violence.

As someone above remarks, he has a very specific skill set!

And talking of skill sets I hope there is a bafta category for make up, there were some very extraordinary special effects.

I watched it entirely over Monday evening (until 1am) and then had nothing on Tuesday so finished it then! Can’t wait for the next series.

As it was raining and still had not much to do I then watched Missing You which was also fab.

Can beat you. 3.30am for us. Up 3hrs later, it's been a fun day. Had a small nap after tea.

We couldn't stop watching it. Loved the whole cast. Akram was great, wouldn't want to cross him!

She reminded me of the first queen Elizabeth.

jay55 · 05/06/2025 10:28

Finally finished it. I did find it quite stressful to the end and I’m very annoyed at just how much is unresolved. They better not make us wait Stranger things/Bridgerton type of waits between seasons.

Reallybadidea · 05/06/2025 11:15

At this point I don't think it's a spoiler to say that I think the shooter, based on the eyes, is Stephen Burns. Also considering Moira though based on her being very unlikely 🤣

imfae · 05/06/2025 13:10

Am enjoying it too . Am about episode 4 . As others have said , a roll call of a lot of the Scottish acting fraternity .
if I was a well known Scottish actor I would be asking , why didn’t they call me ? ???
Whilst it plays to the usual trope of grumpy detective with an unhappy home life , it did come across as quirky and not completely cliched .
Loved the cast and thought there were some interesting quirky characters . Sorry , I know everyone loves Kelly McDonald and whilst I usually find her irritating , I actually liked her in this .
I saw Matthew Goode being interviewed on the One show . He came across well and genuinely keen about this and to get people to watch . I know he is an actor. - and how would I know he wasn’t acting at this point !!!
He did say he was slightly intimidated about working with Mark Bonnar . I think as he seemed quite stern , but spoke to someone who knew him as was told how lovely he was . He agreed that was what he was like in real life .
I don’t think it has been confirmed for series 2 yet , so fingers crossed .

I thought Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland.

I thought she looked exactly like Queenie from Blackadder. Don't know if anyone else has said this.

Dept. Q - Goode so good
