Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

This exists - it’s called IMDB! (Shazam for actors)

Yeah, I think my daughter said something similar, but I want an app that you can just use whilst you’re watching, like Shazam, so no messing about with photos to id them and then using IMDb. Where the app just pulls it directly from whatever you are watching, whoever is on screen. Unless I’m totally misunderstanding and there’s an actual IMDb app that already does the same?? If that makes sense? But, if there is already that would be great!

Is it prime that shows the actors/names along the bottom of the screen whilst paused? Think all apps should.
Of course you then need to look them up on IMDB to see what else they have been in

I've been enjoying this (mostly) mainly for the characters, last two episodes kept my interest but did find myself drifting off thinking about other things whilst watching and then not having a clue who was who..it was quite confusing I thought with lots of different plots going on.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/06/2025 15:21

I really struggle with episodic TV and dark gritty drama, but I started watching this the other day and absolutely gobbled it up (I do have to admit to mostly watching whilst on the exercise bike because I really do have difficulty with concentration and am liable to wander off). I thought this was fantastic. Great acting, good storyline and nice to to have everything all wrapped up and tied with a bow.
I didn't even mind the swearing either - made it feel more real to me. And I only cringed at the blood a couple of times!

MonkeyTennis34 · 20/06/2025 20:20

Loving this series.
3 episodes in and don’t want it to end.
Script is hilarious and actors are all brilliant.
So clever, funny and moving.
Do we know if there’s a second series?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 21/06/2025 08:26

I am also trying to work out what makes Matthew Goode SO appealing in this? He's skanky, his clothes are dreadful, he's rude, very sweary and generally not very nice - so why is he so damn ATTRACTIVE?

MissPrismsMistake · 21/06/2025 08:57

Cleverest person in the room. Needs healing.

Killer combination!

I think you might be right. Not about the needing healing in my case - I'm not into rescuing men - but the intelligence and putting things together is VERY appealing. Probably why I've always got a low-grade crush on Dr Who.

Hesperatum · 21/06/2025 15:09

Generally enjoying it. Carl is a pain and fed up with all the swearing. Love Akram.

Yeah, prime does that for some of its content, that’s really handy. If you click on a name it’ll then take you to an info bit about them including some of the stuff they’ve been in. Can be quite handy, but often doesn’t list everything and can be a bit out of date. I just end up using Google and then the “tv & movies” bit above their name.

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 22/06/2025 10:37

I’ve just watched North Shore, that wasn’t too bad. Couldn’t be bothered with it when it was on the itv app because of all the ads, but it’s handily on Netflix now.

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 22/06/2025 10:58

Loved this, found it by accident on Netflix, binged it over 2 days.

MonkeyTennis34 · 23/06/2025 08:38

We’re on Episode 8, it’s very er, goode.
Are we allowing spoilers on this thread..I’m a bit confused re the plot and have a question!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 23/06/2025 08:42

i was put off this by a colleague and also at the end of the first episode i found it scary but i see it is certificate 15, am really enjoying this.
episode 5 now

Thanks @MissPrismsMistake

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/06/2025 05:58

i liked him in The Crown and also Brideshead Revisited - can't believe he is the same person

TuesdaysAreBest · 24/06/2025 07:30

I liked him in A Single Man. Lovely film.

SunshineDeLaSoul · 24/06/2025 07:34

The only saving grace for me was Akram. I thought it was so slow and plodding with laughable storylines.

MissPrismsMistake · 24/06/2025 07:50

But what about the hairstyles, blouses, Kate Dickie as Moira, moody interiors and landscapes, witty dialogue, singular characters, free flowing vocabulary, interesting relationships, Mark Bonnar …?

To me it was Punk Shetland - so perfection. (Despite sometimes nonsensical plot!)

cryptide · 24/06/2025 09:15

All rather off the point, but I keep wondering why they don't get better lighting in that basement, particularly with the amount of paperwork they have to plough through. And surely at some point some bigwig is going to want to come to see the department they've spent all this money on in action?

The clothes were great, but I found the dialogue dour and not witty at all. Except Akram. He needs his own series.

I can see why people liked it though and I was really hoping it would pick up but not for me. I think slow horses has ruined tv for me Grin

" I think slow horses has ruined tv for me"

And S5 in hurtling towards us. I still want to be Kristin Scott Thomas when I grow up.
