Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

@Tripthelightfantastical yes I know Edinburgh has its beautiful parts, I lived there for five years then moved back up north.
Companies house (acting as the outside of the police station) is near princes street though. I suppose it is a gritty drama so has to reflect that.

dialogue/script is good and very funny in parts.

I did read one guy came home and was raging that there was a new bus stop outside his house, was ready to send off an angry letter to the council because there had been no notification, then saw the cameras and actors and joined the dots.

nice to hear some actual Edinburgh accents and actors other than all west coast which dominates most Scottish productions.

One thing that winds me up about these shows nowadays is that everyone has to wear petroleum blue, the interiors of the posh houses have to be painted in the same blue. What is it about that colour? I mean I love it myself but can I find a cardigan in it? Can I buggery! Yet every drama they are all dressed in it!

FightingFish · 02/06/2025 21:21

Agree that there is a lack of blue tops in the shops, I love it but the only readily available blue is navy! As for the drama, enjoying it so far but more so for the interactions between the investigating characters rather than the subject of the investigation. I’m about half way through but can’t pretend that I’m bothered if the case is solved or not.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2025 21:26

Just about to start episode 7. I am so impressed with Matthew Goode's acting in this. He is so natural.

Tripthelightfantastical · 02/06/2025 21:31

Yes I think the plot is overly complicated and confusing. Too much going on, too many cases and plot lines. I am finding the interactions between the investigators more interesting too. I think it's a bit overwrought though.

so grateful for this tip off. It’s great. Love the writing and twists. And the acerbic comments.

It feels like a cross between Sherlock and Unforgotten with a sprinkle of Morse

And the car of Columbo

Oh ffs I promised myself I was going to go to bed before half 11 ~once I hung out the washing~ and now I’ve put this on 😫 I hope it’s not as good as you all say and that I switch it off within half an hour

How did that early night work out for you @springshadows ? I mean, maybe you’ll be that rare person that can stop after just one episode…🤣

@Shetlandsi will settle for the socks at £22! 😳

hattie43 · 03/06/2025 05:38

Well I finished , not sure about the ending , it seemed too busy and one crime not solved . I love the characters on the Qteam and it’s nicely set up for series 2. I wonder if it’ll be a kind of criminal minds type franchise .

Tripthelightfantastical · 03/06/2025 06:17

Please, no spoilers!

If it helps, iirc you have to wait until book 10 "Locked In" to find out about the shooting that led to Hardy's paralysis and the establishment of Department Q!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 03/06/2025 08:07

Edinburgh in February is gloomy. And they shot some of it in Glasgow too, which is even gloomier.

Watched Episode 2, I'll probably keep going to the end of the series.

What I still resent about it is that the kidnappee was being humiliated for (a) being good at her job and (b) not being nice enough. They wouldn't do that to a bloke.

But it did happen to blokes first (well, boys) and the reason they did it to her was more complicated than that.

The hospital seems a bit slow why don't they get Hardy sat out in an adapted chair or at least an electric bed. Get him in a room with others to interact and get him a laptop so he could be doing more than lying in a bed depressed. I know he is paralysed but the top half still works. Their spinal rehab is a bit lax.

Still only got to ep 3. I like it it just seems so painfully slow, verging on boring. The whole thing could surely have been done in 4 or 6 episodes. I may try epsicose 4 but his sarky attitude and the chamber scenes are getting a bit repetitive imo.

Fair enough, I probably haven't got that far yet.

Thankyou for that recommendation. I will stick with it the scenery, the cast are all great I just want it to move a bit quicker!

LittleBitofBread · 03/06/2025 08:46

Looking forward to starting on this. Mainly here for Kate Dickie, who is who I want to be when I grow up.
Is the Danish one also called Dept Q? Is it good?
There's also another pretty good Scandi drama with the same premise of a slightly shambling department set up to re-investigate cold cases, but I can't remember what it's called. The boss of the team had a daughter who died or went missing or something in one of the cases, which is his motivation for doing it.

RedBeech · 03/06/2025 08:50

It was good. Just a bit different from all the other cop dramas on TV. He is excellent - so are the other leads. I loved the side stories of the other people who make up his team.
