Eurovision 2025

We have had Super Saturday, A good dozen songs are confirmed.

We have controversy in the song from Malta and the Maltese word for singing. Essentially the whole of Finland’s song is arguably even more controversial. Ireland are singing about the Russian dog sent to space in the 50s. Our band has possibly been leaked as a country girl group. Mans might be back for Sweden.

Anyone getting excited yet? Any opinions on the songs so far?

I see Malta have gone full-on bonkers staging. It starts out as the Sound of Music, and - following the obligatory mid-song costume change - ends up with everyone cavorting on neon pink yoga balls.

EurovisionFanGirl · 09/02/2025 12:50

Oh yes - I hadn’t watch it the end. Full on bonkers indeed.

I quite like Belgium and Czechia.

I’m underwhelmed by Ukraine. Maybe it will grow on me.

I quite like Albania. I hope they don’t translate it into English this year. In fact, I think it’s great that we already have several songs in the national languages. It gets a bit dull when everyone sings in English.

munchbunch12 · 09/02/2025 14:38

Thanks for the new thread, can't wait until May!

EurovisionFanGirl · 09/02/2025 16:22

I have been googling Remember Monday and I am now really hoping the rumours are true.

Hello! Place-marking on the thread! (I was wondering if it was too early...clearly not!)
I haven't watched anything yet, we (Ireland) have just had our national competition and decided to send the song about the Russian dog in space.
It's a different departure from last year. A cute, catchy popsong. No scary witch shrieking maledictions this time.

DirectionToPerfection · 10/02/2025 00:34

We (Ireland) had a really strong song in Powerplay, but unfortunately Bobbi just couldn't perform it.

I hated Emmy's song the first time I heard it, and found the subject kind of upsetting to be honest. But she really was the best on the night and won me over.

Malta is insane, surely they'll have to censor it?

Finland looking very strong.

brokenwand · 10/02/2025 11:03

fabulous - really enjoy Euro Vision

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 10/02/2025 11:04

That's a good introduction, but I'll have to look up the full versions to know what I think of them.

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2025 13:27

Thanks!

Staying home this year. But watching with interest.

Heard there's a lot of entries which the UK contingent will love (as in they are shite and it'll boost our chances, but I'm yet to knuckle down and see if there's substance to this).

Sweden currently the bookies fav (still not announced their entry) followed by Israel (probably due to last year's voting pattern which was heavily influenced by politics). Then France, Finland and Belgium (Belgium apparently gone nuts with their entry). Uk currently about 13th in betting.

I'm off to The Netherlands to see my friend for a party instead of Eurovision this year.

I heard Samantha Mumba had a meltdown?

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 10/02/2025 15:04

Yes she did afterwards on comments online. Someone on the panel called her an icon but said her song was weak. It had a long lead in before it started to get going. They were all sitting down at a banquet table for the first bit. It suffered from a lack of energy I think.

DirectionToPerfection · 10/02/2025 17:37

Yeah, she clearly wasn't happy but the panel weren't wrong and they weren't particularly rude either.

Unlike Samantha who posted that they should "choke on a bag of dicks" and then spent hours arguing with people in the comments.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 10/02/2025 18:04

Agree with you completely.

mathanxiety · 10/02/2025 18:24

I'm happy about Ireland's song. Needs a bit of oomph in the staging but they'll work on that I'm sure. I always felt sorry for the dogs sent to space.

munchbunch12 · 10/02/2025 18:46

Hope you have a great time with your friend @RedToothBrush

Someone started a thread the other day as they'd got a ticket to the final. I tried to link them to this to see if they might be able to give us some updates when over in Basel, but I'm not sure if the username exists any more. Think they were called HelloBasel.

OublietteBravo · 10/02/2025 21:12

I’m pretty sure the winning song hasn’t been selected yet. I can’t see any of the current dozen or so winning.

IIRC the odds don’t really start to settle until the selections are completed and the live Eurovision preview shows start to happen.

SF2 (which is the one the U.K. gets to vote in) is already starting to look interesting. Malta and Finland are both in the second half of that semi. As are Luxembourg. You’d have to expect one of those 3 to close the show. Meanwhile, Ireland are in the other half of the same semi - potential opening act?

The other semi isn’t looking as interesting (yet). Although I’d put money on Slovenia getting the #2 slot.

WelkomInEuropaJonguh · 10/02/2025 21:22

I'll be in Basel, albeit just for a couple of nights. We have tickets for the Arena Plus showing of the final but are hoping to pick up afternoon preview tickets instead. That's our preferred show and the one we've attended the past couple of years. Good luck to any other MNers who'll be trying to get tickets in the 2nd wave on 27th March! 🤞🏼

I've watched at least some of most of the national selection shows so far (UMK and Vidbir on Saturday were great) and will be wading through the interminable hours of Sanremo this coming week. https://reddit.com/r/eurovision/w/calendar?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share (Calendar of upcoming events)

I've really been enjoying a lot of the national final playlists but, of the already-selected subs, Ziferblat's Bird of Pray (not prey!) is my favourite. So, so happy this was chosen.

Do you think it's shaping up to be a weak year? That's certainly the noise I'm hearing.

Based on the depth of good songs, 2023 was probably the best year for me. Last year had a few cracking songs but just not as many as the previous. I think between 2019 and 2023 the quality had been on the up, so I do think we are due a bit of a stinker. I think last year's many issues possibly have had an impact so it wouldn't be surprising really.

My plan is to see how this year goes before planning to go again. I do want to, but...

OublietteBravo · 10/02/2025 22:34

I think it is too soon to say. Especially as we don’t know what Sweden or Italy are bringing yet. We’ve had selections from countries that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to be strong contenders (I don’t think Montenegro, Albanian, Slovenia, or Malta have ever won, and Spain certainly haven’t in my lifetime).

You can get a great song winning even in a weak year (I’m thinking 2012). Or you can have a strong year and be utterly baffled by the winning song (2014).

Liv999 · 11/02/2025 22:14

I don't think Ireland will make it through the semis, I think it'll get lost in the sea of all the other dancey tunes

placemats · 11/02/2025 22:30

I liked Ireland's song and always love Finland's entry. Ireland need to finesse the dance routine. Emmy isn't a dancer. Perhaps the back dancers need to full mode on Irish clog dancing.

RedToothBrush · 12/02/2025 20:37

The song title of the 2025 Maltese entry is "Kant".

Makes the Eurovision Drinking Game all the more hazardous...
