We have had Super Saturday, A good dozen songs are confirmed.

We have controversy in the song from Malta and the Maltese word for singing. Essentially the whole of Finland’s song is arguably even more controversial. Ireland are singing about the Russian dog sent to space in the 50s. Our band has possibly been leaked as a country girl group. Mans might be back for Sweden.

Anyone getting excited yet? Any opinions on the songs so far?

Well the U.k entry is absolutely rubbish. Due to that I wouldn't be surprised if it came in the top 3 lol.

SanFranBear · 08/03/2025 23:05

Unpopular opinion on this thread but I'm loving Estonia this year - would love to see them do well. DD is a bit of a Euro nut and adores Tommy Cash.

On that, we're actually off to see Joost Klein next week in London - sold out months back so should be fun. A follow on from Karijaa at the end of last year which was surprisingly great!

SanFranBear · 08/03/2025 23:06

Oh, and agree with the majority opinion - the UK entry is pretty dreadful.. could only be a step up from Olly but still, not going to see the heights of Sam Ryder again for a while, are we 😆

RosaMoline · 08/03/2025 23:42

Don’t see why ‘hell’ should be a problem in a song title.
After all, we had Austria’s ‘who the hell is Edgar?’ back in 2023!
The Swedish entry reminds of a firm of accountants going on a ‘back to nature’ team bonding exercise 😂

OublietteBravo · 09/03/2025 09:12

I’m curious to see how San Marino are going to comply with the following ESC rule:

No on-stage Contestant (whether Lead Singer(s), or dancers) shall be allowed to lip-sync in such a way as to give the impression that they are singing when they actually are not

OublietteBravo · 09/03/2025 11:21

After KAJ won Melodifestivalen, Austria briefly became the bookies favourite. I see we’re back to Sweden being the favourite today. Bara bada bastu will certainly pick up televotes (and could well win the televote). But it was interesting how close KAJ were to Måns in the jury vote - I wonder to what extent this will be replicated in the Grand Final?

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 09/03/2025 13:26

Swedish men's shed! Good fun! I like it.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 09/03/2025 14:10

Ooh, maybe WE could have Mans? No rule against it!

If we sent Måns and Revolution, I bet we’d still finish outside the top 10. I don’t think it’s a strong enough song to get us higher than that!

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2025 15:19

I love the the Swedish entry. That's the clear standout for me tbh.

And shock horror it has a key change!

The cliche has been Eurovision songs have to have a key change, but the reality is that in recent years I think there only been one maybe two that have actually had one. It's really been something that's been out of favour and fashion.

The key change in this, is well done.

I think Austria, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, San Marino, Sweden are good (I don't necessarily like all of them!)

I can't decide if Croatia is good or just utterly terrifyingly awful.

Iceland - Bad Jedward do a Wurzels Sea Shanty. Ooo arhhh oo arhh.
Ireland - wouldn't be out of place on The Story of Fire Saga.

DS says Albania and Italy have been sharing make up.

I think my top 5 are Azerbaijan Sweden, Netherlands, Czechia and Estonia.

Austria has the stand out vocal acrobatics - but it's not as good as some of the songs that have done similar in recent years. Plus I think it will suffer from the Nemo effect (viewers won't want a similar to last year).

The Netherlands is a rarity. It's solid.

Estonia has a Sweden problem. They are in the same box and Sweden is better. I doubt it will do as well as it should for that reason.

Luxembourg is just Eurovision fun.

Malta is just too deliberately offensive (there's no way they didn't know and understand the problem when they entered so I have little sympathy).

Norway is the ubiquitous generic boy band entry which I'm sure is actually the same song every year just with a different dance routine and outfit.

I think Italy's run of decent placing has ended. Meanwhile Germany won't be bottom out of the Big Five. That's between us and Spain.

Obviously waiting on France now, but I really think we are off to Stockholm next year (it was Malmö last year because there was no other suitable venue that was really suitable as the only other venue the right size in a big enough city that was available as the one in Stockholm was under renovation - hence why I think it's Stockholm).

It's the one and only song I've really got stuck in my head after a couple of listens. And it's got enough riffs that work no matter what language you speak - it's a song that works everywhere. And it's got a silly dance.

Order your lumberjack shirts now!

OublietteBravo · 09/03/2025 15:49

I think the main problem with the Austrian song is that it doesn’t really have a hook. It’s vocally impressive, and undoubtedly a solid entry. But I can’t actually recall enough of a melody to be able to hum it. Which means it is forgettable, and likely to struggle in the televote. And winning the jury vote alone isn’t enough to win Eurovision (as demonstrated by Australia in 2016, Austria in 2018, North Macedonia in 2019, Switzerland in 2021, UK in 2022).

I agree with that. It doesn't seem to start anywhere or go anywhere as a song. Yes the vocal range is great but...

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 09/03/2025 15:57

I'm not sure there are many or any songs I like this year. Normally I have five or six that I like a lot.

Margaritawithlime · 09/03/2025 16:04

Hoorah. I find my people again.
I am OVERJOYED that Kaj is in the final. It’s been my melfest winner from the start. I can’t quite believe it! Yes Austria is up there but I’m excited about France. Louane is brilliant so I’m hopeful she’s got something up her sleeves. Albania has been a fave of mine for weeks and honestly I love the UK entry. It’s such an ear worm and so fun. No idea how it will do it certainly seems marmite when I’ve seen reactions but I’m firmly on the ‘love it’ side. Great staging will make it. I haven’t been as excited this year but finally, finally I feel suitably happy by ten or so songs. Bring on Basel!

DirectionToPerfection · 09/03/2025 16:49

I think it's a wide open year. We could have a 2016/2019 situation where a song that doesn't win either televote or jury comes through the middle to win.

It's really hard to call right now and so much will depend on the live performance and staging.

KAJ is my favourite but I don't think they'll have quite enough jury support to actually win. Top 3/4 would be amazing though and would hopefully be enough to show Sweden that it's ok to deviate from the formula.

OublietteBravo · 09/03/2025 17:38

I’m tempted to say that KAJ are this year’s Baby Lasagna or Käärijä, and will be a worthy runner up to whoever wins. Only there is a bit of me that believes that they are more accomplished vocalists, and therefore might pick up enough votes from the juries to actually win

and then I remember KEiiNO and how 2019 went.

Arcade was still the fav in 2019 and it was the one that was talked about most. Duncan was definitely regarded as the one to beat.

Keiino and Sergey Lazarev were fan fans but I'd argue split the same vote.

Soldi came second - it was different and arguably ground breaking.

2016 was the much more open year comparatively.

This year?

I'm not sure. We are still waiting on that French entry so I think it's too easy to say. I do think there's a Sweden/Estonia split vote issue. The same thing really favoured Nemo last year - there were a number of quirky entries.

But there's really not a lot that REALLY stands out from the others. I stand by my thought that after two or three listens you KNOW what really stands out. There's not many in that camp.

I think there's a number of distant 'eurovision categories' in terms of where each song fits in. A song that crosses two or more of these categories often does particularly well.

The most common of these I name:
Operatic
Big Slow Ballad
Chart Pop
Latino / female lead dance troop
Euro Electro-Pop
Rock/Heavy Metal/Alternative
Quirky
Ethnic
Boy Band/Soloist
Rave / Dance
Old Skool Eurovision

I'm trying to work out which song ticks the 'big slow ballad' this year - the jury vote love this, but actually so do the viewers. The big shock last year was Latvia's Dons with "Hollow". It was off EVERYONE's radars but there was nothing else that ticked that box. That's what I'd keep my eyes on. It typically scores well - for me it's not clear where those votes will go for me at present.

That's where I think Louane is still very much keeping an eye on. She has the vocals to tick that - it depends on the song.

The Dutch entry is one of the more polished, and one of the few that stands out and I think will do well but lacks the final edge to win - I think because it possibly sits rather safely in its Chart Pop box. It's VERY well choreographed though but it's not pushing any boundaries. It's on 1.5million views in ten days. If it can step a little into 'big ballard' (think last year's French performance) it could tip the balance. It has that potential. It's one for the night.

That's NOT where the Austria entry lies. I'd call it 'operatic' that Nemo and Jamala fell into. That crosses into Electro-Pop. But the Austrian entry has to escape being Nemo II. It's a chain around it's neck.

And Electro-Pop is a crowded house again this year.

I'd argue Sweden is crossing the Ethnic / Quirky categories well. It's clearly playing on 'sweden' and doing the quirky dance thing. It's 'different' for want of a better word. I don't think there's much in the 'national costume with traditional instrument' category this year.

JJ Austria is currently sitting on over 950,000 views on YouTube. You'd be nuts to ignore that. That's in 3 days. BUT KAJ has hit 538,000 views in 18 hrs on the official ESC video. In addition to that it's got 3.6million views for the melodifestivalen video!!!

It depends on what can pick up momentum in the next couple of weeks. One of the dangers of the quirky entry for me, is how much longevity it has - as in how many times you can watch it before it becomes irritating. Croatia's entry last year suffered for this for me, whilst Europapa went the other way and had momentum. Estonia is more like Croatia in than, I don't think it has the shelf life Sweden has which I think will be pretty damn viral by the time we get to May. I am half expected 'lumberjack sauna parties' as a theme to become a reality.

I really can't see much past France, Austria, Sweden or The Netherlands at present.

The wild card of course is Israel for reasons I need not explain.

OublietteBravo · 09/03/2025 18:20

Who are we still missing? France, Cyprus, Georgia, Switzerland. Potentially Malta (who might revamp their original song or change to something different).

We might get a big ballad from one of them.

OublietteBravo · 09/03/2025 18:20

Oh, and Israel. I forgot about them.

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 09/03/2025 18:34

Hopefully the UK song on the night won't have all the awful mugging close ups of the video, long shots only please.

Yes the open gobs and horse teeth are very off putting.

Attractive girls made ugly by god awful camera angles.

OublietteBravo · 10/03/2025 07:29

Looking at the odds this morning, it’s quite striking that the only one of the top 5 that we’ve seen any sort of staging/live performance for is Sweden.

Yes - live is what matters in the end as we have found a few times. I suppose the pre parties get some live performances out there ahead of the semi finals to give us more if an idea. France is so late and people seem to have a lot of faith in Louane. Hope the song meets everyone’s expectations.

Israel's song has been released today.

Its shot to third in the betting.
