We have had Super Saturday, A good dozen songs are confirmed.

We have controversy in the song from Malta and the Maltese word for singing. Essentially the whole of Finland’s song is arguably even more controversial. Ireland are singing about the Russian dog sent to space in the 50s. Our band has possibly been leaked as a country girl group. Mans might be back for Sweden.

Anyone getting excited yet? Any opinions on the songs so far?

Also I fear I may have made a mistake in not going to Basel.

Måns is the runaway fav to win Melodifest at the moment.

I may cry if he wins.

OublietteBravo · 12/02/2025 21:27

If he wins the whole thing, you can go and see him at Eurovision 2026 in Uppsala.

When do they open bookings on flights from Manchester?!
(His song is being released on the 22nd btw. He SAYS its better than Heroes, but I will reserve judgement on that).

Who knows with Mans — it might be amazing or it might not be chosen. I still don’t understand why he was nowhere to be seen last year.

The BBC have said they won’t play Kant on the radio. I am not sure how they can really broadcast it on the night on TV. You can say Kant means singing all you like but that’s not what it sounds like in the context of the song.

Unpopular opinion: I didn’t really like Heros and think there were better songs in 2015. Is it safe to admit that 10 years on?

HarryVanderspeigle · 13/02/2025 07:19

I was disappointed in last year's show. Seemed increasingly unfriendly for family viewing. Loved Baby Lasagne! Hoping for better this year.

I totally agree.

OublietteBravo · 15/02/2025 17:11

I’ve just been listening to the Finnish song “Ich Komme” - is it just me, or does it really sound like someone singing “income tax” over and over?

EurovisionFanGirl · 16/02/2025 09:18

A few more songs out over the last two nights. Facebook is very excited about Poland - the same person sang for Poland 30 years ago. Estonia has a song about coffee which I think is quite funny and I like the dance routine. Italy is probably going to have a ballad (assuming the guy wants to do Eurovision after winning) which I also like and I think Olly (the Italian possibility) has nice arms 😉

Italy always come up with a great song. I wonder what the U.K. would come up with if we had something similar to Sanremo? I’d love to see us try it.

EurovisionFanGirl · 16/02/2025 13:35

Yes - these National competitions make a lot of sense. But it didn’t really help us when we used to do A Song for Europe.

Yeah, it works well for the countries that do it properly. San Remo and Melodifestivalen are big events in their own right. Meanwhile in Ireland we have a fairly amateur looking set up with the national final tacked onto a chat show.

From last night, I love Lithuania and I think it brings a bit of much needed variety this year.

Estonia is awful IMO, a joke entry that's just not funny. I wouldn't be impressed if I was Italian.

Norway is a generic boy bop but it was slim pickings in their final this year.

I'm not sold on Italy, but it could stand out amongst the many upbeat and quirky songs, and will probably do ok with the juries.

I don't think we've heard the winner yet.

OublietteBravo · 16/02/2025 15:06

I’m definitely not advocating for a return of A Song For Europe. I’d prefer the Sanremo approach - a series of big concerts. Although perhaps coupled with the MelFest use of venues across the country. We could have a big concert in each of Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland - that would be cool. Although I think 5 concerts would be best. Perhaps one in the North of England and one in the South? Sadly I don’t think the U.K. is ready to take Eurovision to that level yet.

EurovisionFanGirl · 16/02/2025 15:51

Just caught up with Lithuania - yes it is really different and soulful.

I think the fact that Sanremo predates Eurovision and there is no guarantee that the winner would want to do Eurovision probably gives it a status that A Song For Europe or similar couldn’t dream of.

Baby Lasagna was robbed last year! Stood out a mile for me

OublietteBravo · 16/02/2025 20:19

I’m not a fan of Armenia’s shouty rap. I think that’s probably a non-qualifier.

Disagree. It was well performed but by god Nemo blew my socks off.

Baby Lasagna doesn't have much longevity as a song. I tired of it pretty quickly.

Nemo, I liked but honestly was slightly luke warm to . It was clearly a great track. But omg the performance.

Me and my friend were stunned at how well he held his vocals and how active his performance was (it was everything Olly Alexander wasn't - Olly was pitchy and breathey. Nemo nailed it).

In the arena he was truly incredible and we knew after he had performed it was going to take a lot to beat. Baby Lasagna really only had a shout because Joost was robbed too. It meant that Lasagna picked up a substantial amount of votes that otherwise would have been split between Croatia and the Netherlands.

I was Team Joost. The right act won.

OublietteBravo · 16/02/2025 20:39

There is no shame in coming second. In fact, he’s in good company:
Cha Cha Cha - Käärijä (2023)
Space Man - Sam Ryder (2022)
Voilà - Barbara Pravi (2021)
Soldi - Mahmood (2019)
Fuego - Eleni Foureira (2018)
Sound of Silence - Dami Im (2016)
Calm After The Storm - The Common Linnets (2014)

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 16/02/2025 20:40

I don't remember the last two, but that's a good list.

OublietteBravo · 16/02/2025 20:40

(I prefer all of the above to the song that actually won in each of those years)

RedToothBrush · 16/02/2025 20:44

Just sat and watched highlights of the entries so far this year.

Oh dear.

Not vintage.

A lot of screeching. I found myself longing for a ballad. Lots that is very samey. Which will split votes.

Malta is going to make the BBC cry. Kant.

Ukraine is the only thing a bit different that was remotely passable. But it's only ok and not a winner.

Ireland. We need a chat about your vocals. And it's giving me Dustin crossed with Scooch vibes. Those costumes. There reaches a point where something is so bad it's good becomes truly terrifyingly awful and really is just BAD. Somehow you've nailed this. Congratulations.

EurovisionFanGirl · 16/02/2025 20:45

I loved Calm after the Storm. I like Rise Like A Phoenix now but was disappointed when Conchita beat the Common Linnets.. That is a good list.

In most cases I prefer those to the winner.

Also see some of the third places, Norway Keiino. Sweden Cornelia Jacobs to name two off the top of my head.

EurovisionFanGirl · 16/02/2025 20:47

Norway Keiino. Sweden Cornelia Jacobs

love both of those
