Just listened to Sweet Bobby on BBC sounds. Very interesting listen about a woman who was ‘catfished’. Then saw it advertised on Netflix, coming out on Wednesday.
Got to be worth a watch.

I really loved the podcast. Just watched the Netflix.

I am generally a very empathetic person. Yet, I find I get really annoyed with women in these situations. I won't give it away but I want to scream at them. Come on you wally, wake up! 🤷‍♀️

Moonlightdust · 24/10/2024 09:48

I just watched this on Netflix last night. Didnt expect that twist. It’s insane. Felt so sorry for Kirat. I know people think she was naive but I think many factors played a part in it such as culture, her on/off relationship she had for so long and her radio job (which I can guess could be quite isolating.

It’s actually psychotic the lengths of deception here - aside from the elaborate story, the false identity (fraud), the extensive communication between fictional people and the overnight video calls were all highly disturbing. How this has not resulted in a criminal conviction or a mental asylum astounds me. Kirat lost years of her life believing in a fake relationship.

Notaflippinclue · 24/10/2024 09:57

Pretty unbelievable

Moonlightdust · 24/10/2024 10:22

So complex. The fact that the cousin knew him personally (as she’d dated his brother) and used this to deceive Kirat was incredulous. It’s one thing speaking to people online you’ve never met, but that link between a trusted family member who claimed to be in contact with Bobby, even transferring a parcel between them etc changed that virtual exchange into reality.
Simran is a real life psychopath.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 24/10/2024 10:37

IMO there’s no way she didn’t know this was all a fantasy. Hence why she stalked his wife after. I even wonder if she and the cousin were in it together, meant as a fantasy relationship which got out of hand.

The whole thing has a stalker vibe to it.

LoafofSellotape · 24/10/2024 13:35

I'm at the point now in the pod cast where she's talking about all the different voices that were used , she said "Oh there were only 4"

ONLY 4? Wtf? It was at that point I think it confirmed for me that it either suited her to believe this or she really is unbelievably gullible.

Even the bit about hiring a detective, I reckon 10 mins and a quick Google would've tracked him down in 24 minutes let alone 24 hours and no need for a detective 🙄

As the cousin was so lawyered up I'm not at the part where they explain how the netflix show and podcast was allowed to be made so that will be interesting.

I understand why she wanted it made,so no one would think it was her fault but all its done is make me think the opposite. You can't complain you get run over if you stand in the middle of a busy road, I mean, come ON!! 🙄

I didn't realise she stalked the wife, wtf?! I wondered if the whole thing was cooked up too at one point between the pair of them.

cakelover75 · 24/10/2024 17:00

Another one here who watched the programme then listened to the podcast to see if it made me believe Kirat more.
My thoughts are while I do think she has been manipulated, I also think she a fantasist who wanted to believe that she was going to end up with a handsome, wealthy doctor.
Did she honestly never Google the guy/his family once or look at their insta/twitter etc profiles? We’ve all done it at the start of a new relationship.
She doesn’t seem to be taking any responsibility for herself (or am I being too harsh).

She didn’t have to. I mean the cousin had dated his brother. So even if she’d never met him the cousin had almost certainly.

My guess is that she’d seen him at some point and fantasised about him, and they’d made up the whole persona so she could have a fantasy relationship as she clearly didn’t want a real one.

But it went on for so long that she actually believed somewhere that she was his gf. Like stalkers and the like do. So when she actually met him, she expected him to want to be with her because he had been on paper.

There’s absolutely no way she didn’t know this wasn’t real. None what so ever.

Motnight · 24/10/2024 17:11

Is the information about Kirsty stalking his wife on the podcast? I missed it on the programme.

Nousernamesleftatall · 24/10/2024 17:16

Was the real Bobby a cardiologist? Sorry if I missed that but if he is he would have been easy to track down.

Also why didn’t she fly to the hospital in NY?

I never thought of it in those terms as Kirat being a stalker (of sorts). Think you’ve hit the nail on the head.

He wasn’t but they didn’t say what his job is (probably because it’s irrelevant). But again, a quick google of “Bobby X, cardiologist”…..
Anyway, I digress 🤐

Because he was in witness protection 🤣

LoafofSellotape · 24/10/2024 17:55

I've finished the podcast now. Is Simran the cousins real name? How was this allowed to be made if she was lawyered up,maybe because all of it was true and they could prove it?

The apology letter was bizarre too, only being allowed to be shown to 30 people.

I have more questions than answers after listening to that!!

Gummybear23 · 24/10/2024 18:39

I think kirat was a fanatist too.
She wanted to believe she was in a relationship with a handsome cardiologist.
She would be proud in her community to have bagged a doctor. Such prestige.

So she fooled herself along.

Although a victim it could have been nipped in the bud early on.

She never saw or heard the guy for nearly a decade!

Kirat is a fanatist borderline stalker.
Her cousin a psychopath. Twisted and sick.
Both to blame for the saga.

SauviGone · 24/10/2024 19:14

I've listened to the podcast and watched the Netflix show and I think this is a story of 2 very unhinged women.

There's no way anyone is as gullible as Kirat makes out she was. She started exchanging hundreds of messages with 'Bobby' when she knew he was married (to his first wife), she met him face to face and he didn't have a clue who she was but she didn't raise it with him because she "didn't want to embarrass him", they had so many mutual contacts - real ones, not imaginary ones made up by her cousin, she could have asked any of them, looked him up on Google within minutes, nothing about his 'shooting' on the news, witness protection but he was allowed to set up a facebook profile to get in touch with all of his friends and family to tell them where he is... Come on!

Bet it was the easiest job the Private Detective has ever had.

My guess is that she’d seen him at some point and fantasised about him, and they’d made up the whole persona so she could have a fantasy relationship as she clearly didn’t want a real one.

Yep, I think Kirat is a fantasist and a stalker. She's met or become aware of Bobby when Simran (who was only 17 at the time all this started) was dating Bobby's brother . She knew he was married but was taken in by seeing photos of him and his supposedly lavish lifestyle and wanted a piece of it, she's talked about him with Simran and it's all started from there.

The stuff where she was talking about being a stepmum (to a child she'd never met) made her sound utterly insane.

I hope the real Bobby and his wife have some kind of restraining order against both Kirat and Simran.

localnotail · 24/10/2024 19:25

The more I think about it the more I start to suspect Kirat is either 1) mentally ill or 2) knew what's going on but went along with it as she liked the fantasy

I find her wanting to run Bobby's wife over quite disturbing. Also, saying that her child is "hers" somehow. This makes me think she actually knew the real situation, that Bobby had a family and a child but still went along with the weird fantasy (did she think it was a lie but sort of not? Like, Bobby really liked her but pretended he was with his wife? Or imagined that despite all the evidence "her" Bobby was the real one?)

I think she is seriously mentally ill. And her cousin is unhinged, too.

Also think Bobby and his wife are a really cute couple. I can see why Kirat wanted a piece of it.

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 24/10/2024 19:27

There's far more info and details in the podcast, the Netflix show doesn't add anything.

But the real Bobby is quite easy on the eye, so there is that Grin, he and his wife really do make a very attractive couple.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 24/10/2024 19:34

Nope not mentally ill IMO an unhinged stalker but tbh i think it goes further than that.

Once all this started to come out she obviously saw a way to profit from it hence the podcasts and the interviews and now the Netflix documentary? I wonder how much she’s shared with the cousin. Was this a whole life cooked up to make money?

IMO she’s guilty of fraud.

redtrain123 · 24/10/2024 19:37

Haven’t listened to the podcast, but have watched the programme, and the levels of deception are unreal.

My thoughts are that Kiat was basically having an emotional affair with Bobby. She loved the interactions with him.

I was also surprised that she never heard through the grapevine that the real Bobby had got married , had a baby etc, or conversely was living elsewhere (,ie fake Bobby).

Maybe not, you are right. I do think she somehow knew what the deal was but why she decided not to believe it and why it went on for so long is a whole another story.

I thought her "morning selfies" were kind of scary. Would you send pictures like this to your lover?

You've summed up my thoughts too.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/10/2024 19:43

I must watch the show. My feeling from the podcast was that on some level Kirat must have known it wasn't real, and this suited her. She wasn't some sheltered little girl who didn't mix beyond her family and Sikh community - she was a mature adult who had enjoyed a normal UK life, education, reasonable career success and relationship history. And although the podcast was keen to suggest it could happen to anyone, the truth is it absolutely could not.

I will never understand why Simran did any of it, or why she has not been called to account for it, including by their family, who seem to have shrugged it off.
