Bridgerton Season 3 May 16th binge watch together

I’m not a telly addict but I became obsessed with Bridgerton during Covid times. I love the casting, the settings, the dances, the music, the yearning, and the guarantee of a happy ending.

I’m embarrassed to admit how much I love it in real life because it’s so shallow.

Is anyone else planning to binge watch season 3 when it’s released next Thursday? If so, can we set up a MN support group please?

I kept thinking Lord Debling (naturalist) might suit Eloise.

I also wonder just how heavy some of the Queen’s amazing wigs weigh. They are so detailed.

Like I say I get the use of prostitution, it's appropriate for the era and the lifestyle etc but it really made me not like Colin this time.
Spoiler, but poor pen was crying about possibly never being kissed and he's buying multiple women.

I think he eventually realises that himself though and that's why he can't perform with the prostitutes the second time. He realises he has to be true to himself.

I thought the costuming was brilliant thus season.

Loved the Queen's wig with the swans twirling insude and the LED lights.

Also,, not sure if it's me, but Cressida Cowper's dresses and hairstyles have become more and more outlandish and complicated - could this be representing how desperate she is to get a husband?

Well I enjoyed it but did manage to work whilst watching it so it didn't grip me.

Too much of the featherington sisters who aren't funny.

Isn't the balloon accident straight out of Georgette Heyer too?

I think there could have been more tension between Colin and Penelope. The 'please kiss me' felt a bit too much of a fast forward.

The build up between them is different because they've been friends since childhood though. Colin already loved her as a friend but when he looked at her differently it happened really fast. They were hardly going to faff around with too much courting before going for it.

Anyway the second part will have loads of tension because that's when we (hopefully) get Angry Colin Grin

hamsterno1 · 17/05/2024 13:26

@Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes I think you're right. I'm missing angry Colin.

It made more sense that Colin suddenly realised how he felt when they both got angry with each other in the carriage, and that he could see who she really was.

I feel like they've skipped all that.

They wigs are amazing.

There’s a programme on Netflix called Bridgerton the Afterparty, which I think was filmed after season 1. The actress who plays the Queen is interviewed and says the wigs are very heavy and uncomfortable. She said by afternoon filming her head was very hot and she couldn’t wait to take them off.

Yeah they've skipped all the stuff about his writing, and a lot about her writing too actually. Which is a shame because when we discover his writing ambitions it might look like he's just trying to overshadow Pen rather than being an ambition they both shared.

Less time with the Mondritches and more time with Colin would've been better

hanka · 17/05/2024 13:52

I’ve mentioned this on a different thread, however, a little bit of trivia- in the first episode of Bridgerton s3 there’s a lawyer played by Edward Bennett who, 10 years ago, played exactly the same character (Berowne) as Luke Thompson does in the same play, (Love’s Labour’s Lost) on the same boards in Stratford 😁😁😁 (finishing soon and very excellent!)
Now Mr Thompson needs to play Benedict in Much Ado About Nothing to get all his comic potential out👏👏👏

I would have loved Penelope to go with the naturalist guy.

It’s hard to believe that Pen puts on a new frock colour and all of a sudden appeals to Colin (who is a disgusting user of women’s bodies).

A sensible choice (naturalist) could have been romantic if done well.

I think though realistically, that isn't the story from the books. The focus is the Bridgerton family so I think having a story about Pen marrying someone else is quite unlikely.

Anyway Penelope is a romantic and she wants to marry for love not convenience, hence her hesitation when talking to her mother.

saltysquid · 17/05/2024 14:03

Season 1 it was all shiny, new and novel. Season 2, Johnathan Bailey is an amazing actor and there was a lot of chemistry between him and Simone Ashley. Storyline was still a mess and we didn’t have enough of them as a couple.
Queen Charlotte got it spot on. Amazing story and actually concentrated on the lead actors. The few side plots were relevant and interesting.
This season is just meh for me. I do like Pen, but am not feeling the chemistry here between her and Colin. Book Colin was so different, am not getting similar vibes from this actor. Book Benedict was very different too, but actually prefer the tv one in this instance. Little side plots all over the place which are not particularly interesting to me.

virgocatlover · 17/05/2024 14:09

I think Lady Danbury's brother will become a love interest for Violet in part 2.

I don't think the men in the books explicitly went with prostitutes did they? I also wish they hadn't included so much of this in the series.

I also don't see the appeal of Colin. I think Benedict's story will be better as his story is much more interesting and his love interest is a strong character.

cathyandclaire · 17/05/2024 15:31

I think show Benedict got book Colin’s personality. I’m looking forward to his season and hope it’s the next one.
I enjoyed this, I thought Nicola Coughlan was outstanding, the willow scene, the first kiss, the cake eating and the carriage were excellent and very believable.
I think Luke N may have been deliberately acting as awkward when he’s the charmer/seducer because he was way more natural in his scenes with Pen. This is backed up by the Lady Whistledown article. However, I think the director should have had some more eye-rolling or something from Eloise/ Benedict to flag to the audience that he’s being a fake idiot, rather than letting lots of watchers think that we’re meant to swoon even though he’s being a bit of a knob!

They couldn't have done this because that's Eloise's exact story. Wonder if Eloise or Benedict is up next? They're probably getting Pen and Eloise out of the way because they're so much older than the age of their characters whereas Benedict can look as old as he likes although this is actually irritating to me because he looks way older than Anthony. He looks like their fun uncle 😬

I loved Cressidas outfits they were wonderful. Could see them on a Vogue front cover. I'm presuming she was supposed to be super fashionable, but often toppled over into parody, esp with the Featheringtons dress sense being toned down somewhat .

cathyandclaire · 17/05/2024 15:47

I heard an interview with the showrunner and she said they deliberately amped up Cressida’s shoulders this season, to tie in with her character arc. I wonder if the redemption is short and she’s going to go back to being queen bitch in part 2, or maybe she rebels against her parents and it reflects her new power...

Notonthestairs · 17/05/2024 15:59

Only seen two episodes. I thought Cressida's become more flamboyant as a sign of her desperation to be noticed.

I like how Penelope's costume has gone from emerald green to washed out green and then a pale greeny blue. Presumably she goes full Bridgerton Wedgwood blue at some point?

Flower arrangements were amazing as always.

For those that have read all the Bridgerton books which ones by Julia Quinn should I try next? Or should I try some Georgette Heyer?

I haven’t read them all, but they do get very samey and predictable after book 2.
I Remember switching to another excellent and far more talented Regency romance writer by the name Gaelen Foley, her knight Series is superb , read them over 20 years ago and still think they are better than Quinn’s .

queenofarles · 17/05/2024 16:23

Honestly it’s lady Fetherington and Cressida who are saving the show , the rest are Boring , I can’t help but think any moment Nicola will have an anxiety attack ala Derry girls.

cathyandclaire · 17/05/2024 16:25

Thanks for the recommendation on more Regency Romance. I also enjoyed Mary Balogh’s Bedwyn books ( Slightly series) and Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.

Harassedevictee · 17/05/2024 17:19

Polly Walker is excellent. I always remember her in the TV series Rome as Asia of the Julii.

I agree with this.
Season One had me captivated, and of course there was Simon ❤️ worlds sexiest man.
Season Two. I didn't much like Simone, it was all a bit scattered.
Charlotte. I loved and it was a masterpiece.
Season Three, it's good, I'm enjoying it, but it feels like I'm still searching for that feeling I got from S one. ...It's a bit like when you have a new relationship and it fizzles out.

Oh my god!! I just realised She played Jane fairfax in the old Emma ! She was brilliant !! She really was the perfect Jane Fairfax.

TheHallmarkedMan · 17/05/2024 17:36

I loved it. I'm here for the Cressida redemption arc. I thought Colin and Pen were lovely and I'm loving all the Brigerton brother banter.

The Featherington side plots are really entertaining and Lorraine Ashbourne is excellent again with Polly Adams. Last season will come back to haunt them big time.

hamsterno1 · 17/05/2024 18:06

I read somewhere that potentially the show might make Cressida into Posy, so that Sophie could be introduced somehow without bringing in an entirely new family.

That would make sense maybe, but given we saw how horrid Cressida's father is, it's almost certainly not.

cathyandclaire · 17/05/2024 18:20

Yes Lady Cowper is called Araminta ( confirmed from a set hairdresser on Twitter apparently!) so the Sophie link makes sense. I think that would be great- much better than getting to know a whole new family that then disappear.
