Following on from the last thread.

We're currently up to where Roy has been arrested for (allegedly) killing Lauren, and Roy's dog has been stolen and the thieves are saying the dog won't be returned until Roy admits his guilt.

Leanne is being drawn into a weird cult.

Toyah is arrested for criminal damage for attacking someone's car. (Someone who thinks Roy buried Lauren in the park!) And she doesn't seem quite herself. What is wrong with her?

Joel and DeeDee are on-again-off-again ...

I'm sure there's a few more bits and bobs going on, but there's plenty of space on this thread (and time) to catch up. Smile

Corrie drip feed families into the street.
We had Gemma as a friend of Davids late wife (can't remember her name). She then became a regular and brother Paul appeared later, then Mum Bernie and now Dad has crawled from the woodwork. Supposedly because he heard on the radio that Paul had raised £800!

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 02/05/2024 09:52

I agree Gemma’s acting is appalling. She has an open mouthed gormless face no matter me what emotion she is meant to be portraying.
It’s that bad now it’s embarrassing. I appreciate the character is not supposed to be the brightest but I’m sure she wasn’t always this dire.

Just when you think it can’t get any worse, the twins dad turns up. Corrie never know when to stop, you’d think there was enough drama in the fact Paul is dying. (I can see both Mick Hucknall and Ricky Gervais!)

I think the dating storyline was just to prepare us for Steve inevitably getting together with someone on his doorstep.

One thing I did like (I think it was in Monday’s episode) was when Steve was talking to Tim on a bench about Tracy and saying why did I stay with her so long after all she did? And Tim said well you loved her, and Steve said - no. At least the writers are remembering the history, Tracy pursued Steve endlessly for donkeys years and finally got him when he’d run out of options. I never felt he loved her, but she was Amy’s mum and he settled.

Yes the pendant is obviously significant. The invisible boyfriend was always going to be significant, he was mentioned so often but never seen.

Well if Mick Hucknall and Ricky Gervais every have a baby now we know what he’d look like. 🤣

JewelleryCat · 02/05/2024 11:25

Do you think with Paul’s dad now on the cobbles, it won’t be long until Paul starts going downhill and then the end? I hope not, the actor has been really good in the storyline

Shellingbynight · 02/05/2024 11:50

I agree re Gemma, I didn't mind her to begin with. It was during the Quads storyline that she seemed to get worse, but that could just be because she was on screen so much. Fortunately she isn't being used that much in Paul's storyline, they are focussing much more on Bernie.

Paul's dad seems a temporary character brought in to cause trouble, I'm not sure he'll be around for long? He will only hang around if there's something in it for him, I'm expecting him to find a way to steal the MND money.

I just read that the actor played Linda Baldwin's brother Jimmy in 2000 - I loved Linda and watched that storyline not long ago on Classic, I would not have recognised him! (There's a pic of him here)

JewelleryCat · 02/05/2024 12:22

That is the same man? I wouldn’t have recognised him either

Hellendegenerate · 02/05/2024 12:47

So have I got this right? Paul's dad knows something about Bernie and he intends to blackmail her?

HurdyGurdy19 · 02/05/2024 13:12

Yes, @Hellendegenerate that seems to be where they're going with it.

Gosh, that's a real fresh approach is soaps, isn't it. New character arrives and threatens a resident with revealing a dark secret from their past 🙄.

eggandonion · 02/05/2024 13:57

Yes she must have a skeleton in the closet.

EachandEveryone · 02/05/2024 14:15

Was anyone else hoping that when Gemma started the sentence’we’ve just been down the council” she was going to finish it saying to get on the council list? Couldn’t she have done that whilst she was there?😀

bizzey · 02/05/2024 14:31

Surely Bernie can't have anything in her closet that is going to shock anyone that much ...in regards to a lot of " closet secrets " that go around the block !

I am sure they must have exhausted a list of secrets that a person can have now !

It can't even be that she tried to sell the twins ...as that has already een done before !

I really can't think of a big enough secret that would shock anyone !

Ok...maybe Gemma and Paul would be upset ..but they would come round as she has proved to be a very good childminder mother when push comes to shove !

Exactly my thoughts!!

Deadringer · 02/05/2024 17:01

Maybe they were in care when they were babies or something, or Bernie isn't their real mum, but that has been done before. Re Lauren's necklace, I seem to remember a kerfuffle about a jewellery receipt with Joel a while back, he is still my number one suspect.

Edited

Well remembered! I’m also suspicious of Joel but I’d completely forgotten about that detail.

ColBoulter · 02/05/2024 17:48

Oooh yes Joel!
We suspected him before
Dee dee and Alya were discussing a reciept for an expensive jewellers and he said it was for cufflinks but was super shifty
Mind you if Lauren had expensive jewellery she wouldn't need to do OF?
Is he in Nathan's gang do we think?
He's got a similar sort of wierd emotionless way about him

  • all speculation
NCTDN · 02/05/2024 19:53

I was thinking that about Joel and the jewellers

Shellingbynight · 03/05/2024 08:52

Thanks for the reminder about Joel. I remember everyone finding him really shifty, then we supposedly found out what he was being was shifty about and that was resolved - but did we? It seems convenient he is now so well accepted. He does seem like a 'disposable' character so could have something to do with Lauren's disappearance.

BuffysBigSister · 03/05/2024 09:48

I am starting to think Joel might be involved in the Lauren story. DeeDee has to be 'punished' for taking him back, that's the way it works in soaps I think. Just when she's started to trust him again - BOOM - he really IS a bad guy, what a surprise. Maybe he acts as the lawyer for the guy who groomed Bethany (forgotten his name).

Deadringer · 03/05/2024 13:40

Joel could be part of Nathan's legal team, or an old pal, he could even be his brother, they are not dissimilar in looks. Or he could just be a creepy weirdo who likes using and abusing teenage girls. He is definitely a wrong un though.

I stopped watching coronation street for a while a few years ago, can someone kindly fill me in on who Nathan is and what happened?

ilovebrie8 · 03/05/2024 19:21

Has Joel actually got a daughter? he’s a strange one …I don’t think he’s involved in Lauren’s disappearance but you never know?!

whats with the flashbacks Roy is having re Lauren and Max?

Yeah I am wondering why Roy keeps seeing Lauren with Max. Very odd. Confused

And yes Joel has apparently got a daughter. Don't think we have seen her though.

Nathan was a member of a grooming gang who targeted Bethany (Sarah's daughter) some 6 years ago. He 'dated' her when she was 16 (he was about 40!) and shared her around his mates. Vile! 😖

Here's more about him here:

Nathan Curtis | Coronation Street Wiki | Fandom

Nathan Curtis

Nathan Curtis was the sinister and exploitative ex-fiancé of Bethany Platt and manager of Supreme Tanning, who was part of a gang who were involved in grooming young girls in order to be pimped. Nathan previously dated Shona Ramsey but she chose to end...
