Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

So earlier I said Ritz was the only good episode. I’ve watched the last one now and I actually really enjoyed it (Apart from them making out she was gonna announce her abdication in Charle’s wedding speech - QE2 would NEVER have done that, she was all for order).

The ending was very moving especially when Princess Elizabeth salutes the elderly Queen. Brought a tear to my eye - but knowing she had another 17 years in her I felt like shouting “it’s fine you won’t die for ages” 🤣

I'm a bit disappointed the series has gone with the scheming CM portrayal. I mean, really! There are no princes in my children's age group but, if there was, I wouldn't for a minute imagine I could engineer a marriage between them. That seems so unlikely. I'm sure, like most mothers, CM just wanted her daughter to marry someone who would make it happy without ambitions about who that was.

Hiddendoor · 17/12/2023 00:17

I'm almost finished, but this part of the series has been almost entirely spoiled by them casting Spud from Trainspotting for Prince Harry.

Ritz was very good though.

HurdyGurdy19 · 17/12/2023 10:12

It was lovely to see Claire Foy again. I thought she was wonderful as The Queen.

Less so, Olivia Colman, but nice to see the two younger queens talking to her as an older woman

Houseplanter · 17/12/2023 10:18

Watched as far as The Ritz and tbh will only finish the rest so I've seen it all.

This season by far the worst.. in fact none have been aa good as the early ones.

Totally agree I'm also up to where you are.

I enjoyed the first part covering Diana, but Ritz was the standout. I found myself wanting to forward through much of the second part. Some really good performances though, Lesley Manville, Khalid Abdulla and Salim Daw were all outstanding. Nice to see Clare Foy again.

Yes! It really annoyed me when the lecturer at St Andrew's called it a semester instead of a term and that Kate talked about having a roommate at uni. I've never heard of British students sharing rooms.

Next they will call St. Andrew's a 'school'!

I do think these series are a bit sloppy compared to the previous ones. It annoyed me a bit when the Queen referred to 'Princess Diana'. I know that's how the general public referred to her, and still do, but she never held that title. No way would the Queen have referred to her as such. A small thing, but I don't think earlier series would have made such an error.

Watched the 3rd episode. This was much better but oh my goodness the casting of carol and Harry.
Dont know if it’s the harsh make up and the hair colour or what, but Eve best looks too old to be carol at this point. She looks amazing in house of the dragon though.
It was implied in the papers that carol organised things so Kate would be in the same place for gap year and changed to st.andrews to be near William so that storyline is already out there.
Could they have not got anyone better for Harry ?

Anyone else think the Kate actress looks like Michelle Ryan (Zoe slater in east Enders ?

8misskitty8 · 17/12/2023 12:10

I live in Scotland and my daughter goes to college. They call it a semester there instead of a term.

verityswims · 17/12/2023 12:29

Thanks for replies about Kate's mother and whether it was a coincidence. That is interesting as I really don't know much of Kate, William and Harry.

I've just finished. I liked the episode where Claire Foy returned (she was wonderful though wasn't she).

verityswims · 17/12/2023 12:32

I think semesters and terms were both words used when I was at university- nearly 20 years ago!

I've only ever seen room sharing once, visiting a friend at a northern university. Quite a small room too.

I was most definitely called a term when I was at Glasgow uni. St Andrew's is a very traditional uni so I don't think they'd call it a semester.

StillWantingADog · 17/12/2023 13:40

In the late 90s there was def some room sharing at my uni (Leeds) and we had semesters. Split into three terms!

Newgirls · 17/12/2023 14:18

I imagine the US universities got the word semester from ancient uk universities - St. Andrews dates back to c15th?

LoobyDop · 17/12/2023 15:05

My (English) university split all the courses into semesters thirty years ago.

Bennyandthevets · 17/12/2023 15:31

For anyone that’s bothered who would be your favourite actors for each part?
Mine are:
The Queen: Claire Foy
Prince Phillip: Matt Smith (also liked Tobias Menzies)
Queen mum: no idea!
Margaret: Vanessa Kirby
Charles: Josh O’Connor
Diana: Emma Corrin
Princess Anne: Erin Doherty
Camilla: Emerald Fennell (also liked Olivia Williams).

Agree with most of those except that I'd favour Tobias Menzies for Philip. Matt Smith was too boyish. Both Diana actresses were brilliant but I think Elizabeth Debicki just edges it. Despite looking nothing like Diana facially, she mastered her voice and mannerisms in an almost uncanny manner.

I think my two favourite actors from the whole thing are Claire Foy and Vanessa Kirby. Her Margaret was so wonderfully complex and I never tire of rewatching her scenes.

The same as you. My favourite Queen Mother actress was the first one, Victoria Hamilton.

I also think there's been some superb performances by actors in small parts - Samuel West as Anthony Blunt, Tom Brooke as Michael Fagan, and Stephen Dillane as Graham Sutherland (who painted Churchill in series 1). I also loved Gillian Anderson as Thatcher.

I also loved HBC as Margaret especially the episode with Roddy Llewellyn.

JoeMaplin · 17/12/2023 16:48

My daughter is at university now. Many uni’s use semester these days rather than term.

Yes mine are the same. We are cycling streaming services so can't watch The Crown till after Christmas, as we still have Prime! Looking forward to it though! I think the entire cast of the first series was just one of those pieces of casting magic that is very hard to engineer but just works.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 17/12/2023 16:54

Went to Southampton Uni in the early 90's and they just introduced semesters. It was just how the course was divided up. In the first half of the year we had some topics then exams. The second half other topics and exams. Still had the three terms, just a new way of dividing up learning and exams.

And yes there were shared rooms and DS also faced that possibility in his first year in halls in September.

I agree with you about actors in small roles but disagree about Gillian Anderson. I normally love her but thought she was dreadful as Thatcher. A complete caricature and she portrayed her as a little old lady even though Thatcher was then only in her 50s, the same age as Anderson. I'm sure her casting had nothing at all to do with the fact that she was then dating Peter Morgan!

Of the smaller roles, I liked Jonny Lee Miller as John Major. Pip Torrens and his moustache as Tony Lascelles was also a favourite and I missed him in the later series. Not really a small role, but I did appreciate the delectable Matthew Goode as Anthony Armstrong Jones. He and Vanessa Kirby were sizzling together.
