Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

I'm looking forward to it although it feels a bit wrong to enjoy it for some reason.

I really struggle with Dolores Umbridge Imelda Staunton as the Queen though.

I think I read it doesn't go much beyond Kate and William meeting, so presumably it just covers C and C's wedding?

Yes, it apparently goes up to 2005, when Charles and Camilla got married, so it covers eight years.

Has anyone started yet? I'm on episode 3. There has been very little of the Queen and mostly Diana so far.

1975wasthebest · 16/11/2023 10:41

I’ve just finished the first episode. It’s Diana-centric and I was hoping this changes, though I think Elizabeth Debicki is terrific. I also remembered that I struggle to believe Imelda Staunton and Dominic West as playing mother and son when they don’t look that far in ages.

I think there's only about 12 years between them so that'll be why!

Chipsatsunset · 16/11/2023 12:51

I’m starting it tonight. I’m looking forward to it.

TammyJones · 16/11/2023 13:01

Watched 1 and 2
Had a break
On episode 3....
It's very good.

concernedmumhelp · 16/11/2023 14:58

Too many ghosts. The actor playing Mohammed Al Fayed is really very good. And Elizabeth Debniki isn't perfect - she over does the doe eyes at times, even more than Diana - but the resemblance is striking.

Lottapianos · 16/11/2023 15:05

I had been looking forward to it, but then I read Lucy Mangan's review in the Guardian today. She said it was so bad it was like having an out of body experience 😁 apparently there's a ghost Diana? 🤦🏻‍♂️ I don't think I can face it

Luddite26 · 16/11/2023 15:08

Oh my word I'm so excited I'm getting palpitations! Don't think I will be able to watch until Saturday.
I'm not doing very well with my nerves ATM and I think Diana's death in this may be a trigger to make me feel upset, wondering where life went etc.
I remember 1997 as being a great time until that and we are so far from that optimistic world.
it's a bit too close to life now and not so much historical.
Having said that one of my favourite scenes last season was Diana voting to abolish the Monarchy.
I didn't enjoy last season as much but there were a couple of episodes that l loved the one with Mohammed Al Fayed really stood out for me and that's when you know what a great series this is.
Love the early ones with Claire Foy as Queen she was superb. And I loved Helena Bonham Carter as Margaret.
Hope everyone enjoys it.

MarkWithaC · 16/11/2023 15:09

Cast and the writer have said the 'ghost' thing isn't meant to be literal; it's characters being 'haunted' by what they should have done/what they think or hope Diana would say to them. It's a fairly common technique in drama.
I do agree with Lucy M the dialogue sounds a bit creaky, but there's worse crimes. Personally I watch The Crown for the settings/clothes and for the tension between what's on the public record and what we're led to believe goes on behind closed doors (in other words, I like the gossipy-speculation side of it!)

TheKnittedCharacter · 16/11/2023 15:11

I read the extremely scathing review in the Guardian but have watched the first 2 nonetheless. I’m enjoying it!

SoftKittyBazinga · 16/11/2023 15:16

I read that review too, but I still intend on watching later!

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/11/2023 15:18

Really there should just b a disclaimer at the end of episode 3 “Please watch The Queen with Helen Mirren and we will pick up from there.”

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/11/2023 15:24

I am starting to watch. I hope they don’t martyrise Diana. I think people forget she was kind of awful.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/11/2023 15:28

I didn’t realise Dodi was engaged to be married (in 3 weeks!) when he met Diana?!

concernedmumhelp · 16/11/2023 15:53

He probably wasn't. There doesn't seem to have been a wedding arranged, though his ex fiancee apparently claimed that there had been talk of August 9 being the date, at some point,

Houseplanter · 16/11/2023 15:55

I'm on the second episode. I have some sympathy for Diana at the moment. Shes a divorced woman, Charles is publicly with Camilla, and she has a new boyfriend. What's so wrong?

But I'm still open minded. Enjoying it though.

Thedrownedprophet · 16/11/2023 15:59

I'm enjoying it too. It's heartbreaking though

She was no more awful than any member of the royal family. What she was was human and fallible like everyone else. She was also ill with bulimia. Very unfair to just call her awful. The Terence Higgins Trust would certainly disagree with that.

TheKnittedCharacter · 16/11/2023 16:29

This portrays Diana as positively saintly. I’d agree she was pretty awful in rl.

While I think 'awful' is simplistic, as well as too strong, The Crown so far (I haven't started Season 7) has certainly always sided with her pretty uncritically. Young Diana was portrayed as not knowing what she was getting into marrying into the Firm, but in reality she grew up around the royals and had ladies-in-waiting as relatives. I don't believe she could have been THAT naive about it.

OldTinHat · 16/11/2023 16:38

You've all convinced me...I'm off to resubscribe to Netflix...!

TheKnittedCharacter · 16/11/2023 16:43

Oh god it gets very silly by episode 4!

JSMill · 16/11/2023 17:19

I'm watching it. On episode 3 so far. Mohamed Al Fayed doesn't come out of this very well. Diana isn't being portrayed as a saint.
