Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

IcedPurple. Completely agree with you there on all counts.

Houseplanter · 17/12/2023 18:07

Finished it.

Harry's portrayal as a whiny, nasty character surprised me.. it was set at a time when he was so popular with the public. Netflix surprised me.

The Queens quandary about abdication I thought absolute twaddle.

All in all I think they should have stopped before this series.

Absolutely. I don't believe she considered this for one second

I think Harry has probably always been whiny and nasty. We just didn’t realise. I’m guessing Netflix probably have got the measure of him having worked with him.

Apart from the Aberfan episode, the Ritz episode is the only one that had me a bit teary. I thought Leslie Manville was excellent in this episode and really embodied Princess Margaret. excellent episode. Still 2 more to go but I do not like at all how they have portrayed Carole Middleton. Based on unsubstantiated gossip and quite nasty. The truth is that hardly anyone has talked about the Middletons so we know v little about them. I don’t for a minute believe she was as contrived as she has been made out here. And anyway - maybe I don’t care if she actually was. Kate has proved to be an excellent partner for William and I think the Middletons have been excellent as a whole for William.

LBFseBrom · 17/12/2023 20:56

I don't think Prince Harry is at all 'whiny and nasty', neither was he portrayed as such in 'The Crown'! I can't think from where anyone got that idea, he came across as normal for someone of his age at that time and quite fun with it. In real life he has matured into a smashing chap, with depth.

Agree about the awful portrayal of Carole Middleton (and she looked awful with it which we know she does not).

Lesley Manville was great as Princess Margaret, that was moving.

I've watched the entire series 6 twice now and daresay I will again as I have with the previous five series.

But did they call them semesters back in the year 2000?!! Only joking 🤣

thenightsky · 17/12/2023 21:14

The chap playing the piper would have made a better Harry.

Houseplanter · 17/12/2023 21:50

Prince Harry did little but roll his eyes, make hurtful comments to William which he thought a later apology rectified, was immature and selfish regarding his dads happiness and clearly hated being second

I can't see how it was anything else.

Bennyandthevets · 17/12/2023 22:03

I like what I know of Harry in real life & I'm glad about the outcome of the phone hacking case. I do think the portrayal in the later episodes of series 6 made him seem quite weasly & sulky. I also thought the actor wasn’t a good likeness. Overall I was disappointed with the portrayal (although in the earlier episodes of series 6 he was very sympathetic but then he was so young).

Houseplanter · 17/12/2023 22:07

I can't claim to know the real Harry.. I was just commenting on how I felt he was portrayed.

I agree the casting didn't help.

EasternStandard · 17/12/2023 22:30

IcedPurple · 15/12/2023 17:51

Same goes for the William actor. A 15yo with wrinkles? I don’t know why they just couldn’t cast some cracking young people! It just felt odd and misplaced.

They are reluctant to cast minors because of legal restrictions on working hours and so on. That's why teenagers are usually played by actors who are clearly older. Derry Girls is a very good example. They were all supposed to be schoolgirls but looked like, and were, adults.

I agree that the William actor looks way too old to play a 15 year old, but I guess in later episodes he'll be about the right age.

Just started watching and agree with you he looks too old

EasternStandard · 17/12/2023 22:32

Strange choice for Harry too

LBFseBrom · 17/12/2023 22:46

I agree, he does look too old, too tall really for that time. He shot up a bit later. However, the producers and directors can only go so far in getting a likeness, on the whole they didn't do too badly.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/12/2023 22:49

I've just finished the last episode, all in all I enjoyed it and am sad that's the end of The Crown.

The bit that cracked me up was William talking to the Queen about going to the Middletons for lunch and trying to work out where they'd eat 'in the kitchen? Like the staff?'

😂😂

That is a conversation I can imagine them having.

I agree the portrayal of CM was brutal, poor woman! That said it did seem a bit stalkerish that Kate did a similar gap year, went to the same uni and signed to to the same course.

Harry was always a bit of a dick wasn't he, wearing the nazi costume 🤯🤯

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 17/12/2023 22:55

I liked the episode that featured the close bond between the sisters (Ritz). It was very moving; the goodbye and closing scene. It was well done, the contrast between the final days of ww2 and modern times and how their relationship had endured for so long.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 17/12/2023 23:20

JSMill · 16/12/2023 13:06

Yes! It really annoyed me when the lecturer at St Andrew's called it a semester instead of a term and that Kate talked about having a roommate at uni. I've never heard of British students sharing rooms.

british universities use the term semesters. At my university the year was divided in to three terms with a holiday in between each but the teaching was split in to two semesters with the exams at the end of each. The second term contained both the first and second semester.
and whilst not common, there was some room sharing at mine and I know of other universities where it was a lot more common.

Passepartoute · 17/12/2023 23:24

I thought Imelda Staunton smashed it in the second half of this series, particularly in the scenes where it's just her and one other person - especially with Margaret.

Rinoachicken · 18/12/2023 00:27

The likeness of Imelda with the Queen is amazing - there were side shots where you would not be able to tell the difference between the two. She got her mannerisms, her walk, voice, and facial expressions perfectly - how she moved her head when looking at things, her bottom lip when thinking - everything. Superb work from Imelda.

Luddite26 · 18/12/2023 06:57

IcedPurple · 17/12/2023 16:55

I agree with you about actors in small roles but disagree about Gillian Anderson. I normally love her but thought she was dreadful as Thatcher. A complete caricature and she portrayed her as a little old lady even though Thatcher was then only in her 50s, the same age as Anderson. I'm sure her casting had nothing at all to do with the fact that she was then dating Peter Morgan!

Of the smaller roles, I liked Jonny Lee Miller as John Major. Pip Torrens and his moustache as Tony Lascelles was also a favourite and I missed him in the later series. Not really a small role, but I did appreciate the delectable Matthew Goode as Anthony Armstrong Jones. He and Vanessa Kirby were sizzling together.

We loved Tommy Lascelles my DD bought me a book of his diaries from when he was private secretary to KGVI. We also still have a pic of him as our The Crown group icon on WhatsApp!
Great characters well written.

I agree, it was quite striking and, as you say, especially in profile.

Dominic West also caught the voice, mannerisms and mouth movements of the (then), Prince of Wales, and looked like him in profile.

Heffapotamus · 18/12/2023 07:32

@JSMill

At St Andrew's they are definitely semesters and sharing rooms in Sally's (St Salvador's), the hall I believe both the Wales were in, is very common.

St A's is a strange beast of a university - very small by uni standards with around a third of students from the States.

LadyBird1973 · 18/12/2023 07:49

I thought Harry was quite sympathetically played - his opinions were often over ruled by William's in the series and the bit where he chose the costume, William said you aren't a nazi just because you are wearing the costume. He didn't tell him it was a really bad idea and not to do it, which iirc ties in with what Harry has said irl about William being on board with it and not disapproving.

I think kids tend to think of it all as 'history' - this theoretical thing that bears no relation to real people. So I suspect a young and cocky kid picked it as a costume without giving much thought to what they actually did to real people. Obviously with his education and access to advisors, he ought to have thought about it and his friends/brother should have stopped him, but I think this was just one of those stupid things kids do cos they think it's funny, and that they grow out of and cringe about when they get some sense.

StillWantingADog · 18/12/2023 09:45

I’m finding s6 quite disappointing tbh

the earlier series were all very self contained, typically focussing on a single historical event/point in time. Sometimes going into greater depth on one of the peripheral characters. Vanessa K as Margaret was a revelation, as others have said the actor playing Tommy Lascelles was incredible

whereas for this series almost everyone else except for possibly the queen is pushed to the periphery and we just have a Diana-Charles-William soap opera.

derxa · 18/12/2023 10:57

I’m disgusted by the portrayal of Carole Middleton 😡
