Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

I also was rather surprised by the scene where Camilla was giving Charles advice on how to be a good father! I doubt that she was that worried about the welfare of William and Harry as boys tbh or else her behaviour would have been very different indeed presumably?

Bennyandthevets · 16/12/2023 12:18

I’m not saying the portrayal of Carole Middleton wasn’t misogynistic but you could argue that the portrayal of Mohammed Al-Fayed was similarly unflattering. I suppose the difference being that M Al-F is no longer alive to see it!

Passepartoute · 16/12/2023 10:30

Odd then that they cast a different actor to play young Kate. Not sure how old she is, but it was the actor who played Darrell in Malory Towers, wasn't it?

I haven't seen those episodes yet, but I don't think she's in it very much, is she? So they could probably have filmed her scenes in a short time and the regulations about working hours for minors might not have mattered so much. Strange to change the actress in the middle of the season however. That's not their usual practice.

I disagree. they accurately quoted him AND they also managed to make a rather deluded social climber to be a very sympathetic character. CM’s only dimension in The Crown was gold digger by proxy

I think the made up meeting about KM meeting Princess Diana was ridiculous. Too much of the show panders to American audiences

Yes! It really annoyed me when the lecturer at St Andrew's called it a semester instead of a term and that Kate talked about having a roommate at uni. I've never heard of British students sharing rooms.

WobblyLondoner · 16/12/2023 13:13

@JSMill DP shared rooms (decades ago now) and it still happens - there is a college at Durham where that is the norm for first years. But it isn't that common.

Bennyandthevets · 16/12/2023 13:59

@LeaveBritneyAlone that’s true actually, he did somehow come out as quite sympathetic despite his interfering behaviour & also from what I read he had form for sexually harassing female staff members. Good point.

Newgirls · 16/12/2023 14:09

St Andrews does still have shared rooms in the ancient halls. Fair enough as the rooms can be enormous. They are allocated even if you request otherwise so that part was probably true.

I enjoyed the first episode about William as it about him one day getting the crown and the pressure of Diana’s legacy for press intrusion. Also the chess scene was well done I thought

I had just been about to ask if that was true. It seemed unlikely.

verityswims · 16/12/2023 15:07

What was all of that about Kate being signed up to various activities it was known, or thought, William would be doing. Even something to do with the university course itself and the gap year to match? Or just coincidence?

I'm on the last episode I think now

LBFseBrom · 16/12/2023 15:28

It was just coincidence, the writers were trying to make Carole Middleton into some sort of scheming Mama. Not charming but if anyone complains they can just say it is a drama so bound to have factual inaccuracies. Hopefully, Mrs Middleton will laugh at it. I'm sure anyone who knows her will not think that is true. She also never looked as awful as the actress playing her part, Eve Best, who looks far better in other roles with her hair done nicely.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 16/12/2023 15:41

To be fair to the script writers there have been a few books about Kate and they all suggest going to St Andrews was a strategic move.

Her school careers advisor and Housemistress say she was very keen on Edinburgh Uni, achieved the grades and was going with two close friends. They were surprised at her change of heart.

So whether or not it is true who knows but The Crown isn't the first to spin the narrative.

ChristmasIsCome · 16/12/2023 17:23

@JSMill i went to a Russell group university in the 90s and they called them semesters. We had two semesters per year with exams at the end of each. We still had three terms per year with a long break between each but were taught in semesters.
Am I the only one who actually quite liked the middletons portrayal. They showed them as a cosy family who cared about each other. Ok so there may or may not have been plans to be in the same place as William but I doubt that was uncommon in those circles.

.............
Which books and written by whom? I've never read one and I do read things about the royals.

I have heard the rumour but it strikes me as just that, a rumour, unsubstantiated and, frankly, unpleasant. If you think about it, would it be possible to engineer such a marriage? I doubt it very much. Two people have to be attracted to each other for a start and that doesn't necessarily happen. I don't think the Middletons would have wanted anything other than happiness for their children.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 16/12/2023 18:14

@LBFseBrom

Kate: The Future Queen, by Mail on Sunday Royal Editor Katie Nicholl and The Palace Papers by Tina Brown.

For what it's worth I don't necessarily believe it. Mainly because Kate could have had a far easier life marrying very well (like her sister) to a billionaire and out of the public eye

The point I was making was that The Crown didn't write the whole strategy plot out of nowhere. It's been around for years

Mind you, if I was Carol I'd be livid !

Borageandchips · 16/12/2023 18:18

Agree, I think the “CM as schemer” narrative was born out of dreadful snobbery; how dare a nice middle class gal marry a prince?

Btw I had to chortle a bit at one of the cleaners singing a Scottish lament; now that was definitely inserted for the US viewers!

1975wasthebest · 16/12/2023 18:37

Kate didn't just want to go to Edinburgh, she was accepted to go there in 2000 according to her careers advisor, but of course she chose instead to have a gap year and go to St Andrews in 2001. I doubt we'll ever know why she made that decision.

I think it's understandable that hearing that William was going to St Andrews, she might have wanted to go at the same time just for the curiosity value. I certainly would!

Restrelief · 16/12/2023 20:13

I haven’t watched any of the most recent series. Does the Queen appear much or is this series about succession to the throne? I’ve heard about the scenes of the Queen wanting to keep the boys away from London but a lot of this seems focussed on the other royals.

I will watch at some point, reluctant as this is now a time I remember.

ChristmasIsCome · 16/12/2023 20:28

@Restrelief she is still in it quite a lot. They cover her losing her sister and mum and having to consent to Charles and Camilla marrying.

Bathsheba1789 · 16/12/2023 21:16

A friend of mine worked at Marlborough.
She had a place at Edinburgh and a house lined up with two friends.
Kate and William met when they were both in upper sixth - they didn’t first meet at St Andrews at all.
Anyway at the last minute Kate decided against Edinburgh, did a gap year and reapplied to St Andrews.

@JSMill - nothing wrong with semesters -

Sharing rooms was very common in my day (admittedly quite a few decades ago). Not sure how common it is now, but don't forget it's over 20 years since William and Kate went there.

Ritz is focussed on HMQ & Margaret and is a sublime episode

First time I have heard of the term semester used by British academic institutions but I'd rather be wrong than poor research by the producers.
