This is a crime/sci fi drama set in 4 different periods - 1890s, 1940s, late 2020s and 2050s. Quite intriguing. Anybody watching?

I guess the 'know you are loved' is meant to reflect the fact that Elias was rejected by his mother and never felt loved?

The main issue is how the bomb was decided on in the first place. I get the loop of future Mannix becoming Harker to set up his own descendant creating his utopian world, but who initiated the decision to nuke London to create the clean slate for Mannix to become world leader? Elias is clearly groomed by Harker, but as he is young Harker and is so reluctant, the first bomb doesn't make sense.
Main problem is that Harker/Mannix was miscast. Stephen Graham is a terrific actor, but he couldn't do the accent, and he doesn't have the looks- I can't see Lady Harker adopting him, or Polly falling for him.
The detectives were terrific though. Speaking of accents, Hillinghead's was perfect. I never would have known the actor was American. Incidentally, anyone else thought he had the look of a bearded Jude Law?

I agree..the only thing that kept me watching really was the scenes with white man snd hillinghead

LoobyDop · 09/12/2023 00:12

I loved this, although I agree Stephen Graham was miscast. It reminded me a lot of Cloud Atlas.

Can anyone explain what would have happened to maplewood in the final version where she went back? Her conversation with Hillinghead obviously altered the series of events but what became of her? Did she get stuck in the Victorian era as a 'cripple'? How did she pop back up in the taxi? I'll admit time travel blows my mind and confuses me but even dh can't seem to explain that one.

LoobyDop · 11/12/2023 10:39

I think there must have been multiple versions of her arriving at different points in time. Either that or in the future Defoe was able to go back to 1890, rescue her and take her to another era.

I thought the time loop was broken - so those events ie Maplewood going back to Victorian England never happened because the events that made her do that never happened.

As Stephen Graham never went back the young lady he married never met or married him thus you see in 1940s posters for her concerts - everything resets and thus none of it happened and he never existed to set bomb so that future Maplewood knew was radically changed.

Everything that series showed never happened - so we go back to starting point - which for series was riot/protest but there no one to chase now - and taxi later it's another future version of Maplewood that now heads back to that timepoint as another whole plot is supposed to happened - they must still have built the time machine thingy in future again and Maplewood once again caught up with it and sent back.

I do think the whole time machine things wasn't explained well though - as why were there sometimes four spat out and how did they all get back to right time ie time needed for plot to progress.

Good theory @TripleDaisySummer

autienotnaughty · 11/12/2023 20:55

I've just finished. Great acting ok plot. I have some questions if any science fiction experts are about .

Defoe split in four when he went through the machine but ellias and maplewood didn't so presumably it was something to do with Defoe being shot. So how did maplewood exist in 2023 if she was last seen in the 1800's? And how was she not disabled?

When young ellias didn't detonate he disappeared and ceased to exist. Why? Presumably there was an original ellias that didn't detonate a bomb (as it hadn't been created) but did meet Defoe and create the time loop. So why did ellias disappear?

If anyone has answers I'd be very grateful!!

LoobyDop · 12/12/2023 08:48

Elias was only born because in 2053 he went back in time and became his own great-great-something grandfather. When he didn’t detonate the bomb in 2024, that future no longer happened, future him didn’t go back in time, so none of his descendants including Elias were born.

But he must have been born in the first place to have got to 2053 and gone through the Time Machine the first time? Surely that ellias should have stilled existed.

Yeah, it doesn’t actually work when you pull it to bits- the grandfather paradox.

Oooh glad I found this thread as we're on the last episode.

Excellent tv although if I try and work it out I realise I don't really know what's going on Grin

Really worried for the version of Iris who has gone back and doesn't have her spine thingy in. But I guess she will find her way back to 2053 - or a version of her will - in 4 days?!! Have I understood that right?!!! Grin

Feel the need for someone to start an AMA I understand time travel and can explain it to dummies, thread.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 09/01/2024 13:57

So all caught up.

Really enjoyed it yet haven't a clue how it all worked out. Although if everything reset how come Iris was driving in 2023?!!

Felt sad for Elias, his whole existence was one big head fuck then he wasn't even there.
