This is a crime/sci fi drama set in 4 different periods - 1890s, 1940s, late 2020s and 2050s. Quite intriguing. Anybody watching?

Is it coincidence that all 4 detectives are from groups that have suffered discrimination (homosexual, Jewish, black/muslim, disabled)? Am wondering if this is some subtext.

I wondered this too, thought it might be relevant to the plot. But having finished it, that's not the case

Could you please let me know which version of Utopia you all liked?

I can find two seasons of a UK one and one of US

thanks!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/10/2023 17:35

The original UK one (2 series) but it was cancelled prematurely sadly

2023usernameNew · 27/10/2023 19:19

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit thanks!

looking4pup · 27/10/2023 19:45

@2023usernameNew 😂😂😂

looking4pup · 27/10/2023 19:47

The 2023 / 2050?? Buts are so boring and confusing.

I'm enjoying the 1890? And 1940 bits but I'm so lost.

Contact lenses always make eyes look creepy because they sit on the cornea, whereas the actual iris is flat and not right at the front of the eye.

I was wondering what happened to all the versions of the characters that split off into the future, there should be three more versions of the prof and another Elias and another staplewood at an equidistant time in the future now, right?

I do love a time travel show.

itstimeforme · 27/10/2023 21:08

Just finished Episode 6 and suddenly I'm lost. So many things I don't understand, hopefully they will be tied up by the end.

On the plus side I stood next to Jacob Fortune-Lloyd in a shop today and he seemed lovely! All the staff knew him and were chatting away to him, and he advised me on which juice to choose. Quite easy on the eye in real life too!

Very true @curlykate99

looking4pup · 27/10/2023 22:29

I can't get over Stephen Graham's accent/s and prosthetics.

Spinnymop · 28/10/2023 08:09

I'm confused about the loop part. Stephen Graham goes back in time and has a baby with Polly, then that baby has a baby who has a baby, etc, and then eventually Stephen Graham is born from that line. But how can he exist in the first place to go back in time and become his own ancestor? It's like a reverse grandfather paradox.

mrsnjw · 28/10/2023 08:16

I was lost by the end 🤣. Is this a spoiler thread?

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/10/2023 09:18

And no one went - "you had sex with your great great grandmother?" Euuuuuuw

I think the professor only split in 6 because he was shot as he entered The Throat. All versions of him, presumably other than him as a child in 2023, disappeared once Mannix ceased to exist.

Portakalkedi · 28/10/2023 12:16

Well, that was fascinating but not sure I really get it all. I love time travel stories (with the notable exception of The Time Traveller's Wife), and am willing to suspend disbelief, but my goodness ... I know they were talking about a 'loop' but can't get my head round Mannix/Harker and which period he was really from, and the whole being his own grandfather or whatever? Also didn't like that actor, not sure how much of his dodgy accent was deliberate, as he had to put on a posher accent when he became Sir Julian Harker. He seemed completely unsuitable for the role, and the boy Elias could not look any less like the potato-faced adult Mannix.

mrsnjw · 28/10/2023 12:19

Yes it was the lack of resemblance of Elias to the older man. I enjoyed it but don't get it all. Could be back for a second season as it was left open.

Have you watched Travellers on Netflix? I loved that too, though as so often happens it was cancelled after season 3 so you never got to see how everything panned out.

@KimberleyClark
I may have watched a bit of that when it first started, rings a bell.

My fav of all time (pardon the pun) is Time Crimes, it's a film, I think the original is in Spanish, and it's hard to keep up with because of all the travelling, but bloody amazing.

EasyLifer · 28/10/2023 13:51

I enjoyed it but still not sure what the point of it all was really. Like a PP I liked the bits from the past best, I love Victorian and wartime drama. I would love to see a spinoff show with the detectives from either of those plotlines without the time travel element.

GalileoHumpkins · 28/10/2023 17:11

We finished it last night, it was the best thing I've watched in a while.

IAmtheVampiresWife · 28/10/2023 20:43

Well I liked it, but glad I binged as I would have had to recap every time before I watched the next episode!
