This is a crime/sci fi drama set in 4 different periods - 1890s, 1940s, late 2020s and 2050s. Quite intriguing. Anybody watching?

@Wanderingowl I took it that the Jewish cop was marginalised and vulnerable but was also not adverse to dodgy stuff to build up money (as it was implied were a lot of he cops at Whitechapel - regardless of background) - he referenced keeping his money at his mums in case the UK went the same way as Germany - which I suppose was a very real fear for British Jews in 1941.

I know, but 'money hoarding jew' is such a centuries old stereotype that it's a bit odd for that character to lean so hard into it. Hopefully, future episodes will give him a lot more depth. Because, very recently, we've seen evidence that anti-semitism is more rife in Europe today I thought it was so it's standing out to me that only one character is an embodiment of the negative stereotypes of their group.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/10/2023 14:29

Yeah I get that.

Bichette · 23/10/2023 14:39

I've seen the whole series and I think Weissman/Whiteman comes over as a very sympathetic character with a key role in breaking the loop.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/10/2023 15:01

I got the impression he was a bit of an East End hustler whose limited options were join the police or a gang.

That was another theme - reasons why people from marginalised groups might join the aparatus of the state - the Victorian gay detective said he joined "to hide" and the disabled detective from 2053 said she joined "to fit in". I also got the impression from her conversations with her brother it was the only way she could access the spinal implant that enabled her to walk.

Absolutely loved this series.
one thing I missed , why was ds sahara hasan chosen ?
is there a spoiler thread if better to post on there ?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/10/2023 20:03

Just finished this, loved it!

Did the ending leave it open for another series?

SnakeyS · 23/10/2023 20:08

I’m just on Ep 5, and I have a Q.

Trying not to give anything anyway…

The bit where the baddie says to Whiteman ‘know you are loved… and her mother’ are we meant to take from that the woman in that scene is the mother?

Maybe. Because I can't see any other reason for the taxi driver in the final scene to be there.

But what was with the cellar full of bodies in formaldehyde that Hasan went to? Where did the rest of them come from?

They were all Defoe, the three bodies from 1890, 1941 and 2023.

I agree, I liked him, he was damaged but had a moral code of sorts.

It helped that he was v easy on the eyes though 😉😂

Cadenza12 · 23/10/2023 22:53

Finished. I was intrigued but TBH I'm not 100 percent sure I've really got my head around the whole thing. As many questions as answers!

YouAreShoutingAtTea · 23/10/2023 23:55

Don't read if you haven't finished!!

How come the professor guy ended up in the 40s, now and in 2053? He went back to 1890 to stop Mannix but how he ended up at the same place those other years???

viques · 24/10/2023 00:01

Just watching. Can’t believe lovely Anne from Motherland did that!

Tigresswoods · 24/10/2023 14:16

@YouAreShoutingAtTea I <think> they've sent him to these time periods to fix things & he's died each time. So they tried more than once.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/10/2023 14:49

I was wondering how everyone was happily living and working in a London that had been subject to a catastrophic nuclear blast 30 years previously.

There are areas surrounding Chernobyl that are uninhabitable 35 years on and are predicted to remain so for decades in the future.

looking4pup · 24/10/2023 18:54

@OvaHere What??

looking4pup · 24/10/2023 19:00

As in I didn't see the convention with the young lad.

The detective in 2023 is she supposed to be Asian? She wears a head scarf and her name sounds Asian but her son looks black. Her dad is Asian / Indian. He might not be her bio dad but if she's meant to play an Asian woman it's annoying.

looking4pup · 24/10/2023 19:01

Connection **

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/10/2023 19:18

@looking4pup the actress who plays her is half Indian, half Nigerian.

bippityboppity87 · 24/10/2023 19:23

Just finished watching it. I liked it, though unless I'm missing something, could they not have just gone back in time to where Elias was about to meet his mum, and Shahara went back then to convince his mum to come out? Or did they need the recording?

CheeseMuffin · 24/10/2023 19:30

I enjoyed this but young Elias looked absolutely nothing like Stephen Graham!

I think it's because (well what they said) was because his body "split" into the different dimensions because of the bullet

Yeah the casting wasn't great, I thought that.

looking4pup · 24/10/2023 21:43

I've just finished episode 5. It's gone all crazy. Does it get better? I don't want to waste another 3 hours.
