This is a crime/sci fi drama set in 4 different periods - 1890s, 1940s, late 2020s and 2050s. Quite intriguing. Anybody watching?

I think she was an amnesiac. She clearly couldn’t remember she was supposed to be doing an English accent..

Weissman/Whiteman was gorgeous, why can't suits and the thin tash come back into fashion?

I've finished it and quite enjoyed it!

IAmtheVampiresWife · 30/10/2023 22:07

I actually liked her accent and felt that it went with the weirdness of the 2053 place and her involvement with the establishment there.

Ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyourbiscuit · 30/10/2023 22:11

I thought maybe the parent she didn’t share with the brother had the same accent as her and so that’s why she had it. Was the only explanation I could think of

I felt the same. She was supposed to jar with the viewers - inkeeping with the weird utopian future.

WednesdaysPlaits · 30/10/2023 22:31

But she was a baby in London. It made no sense whatsoever.

WednesdaysPlaits · 30/10/2023 22:33

They could easily have built in an explanation for it but they didn’t bother because some muppet believed her when she said she could do an English accent.

I’ve liked her in other things but not in this.

Wanderingowl · 31/10/2023 18:20

I just finished reading the comics and after that I have to say hats off to the Netflix writers for turning the source material into something compelling. And turning Whiteman into a human being!

Stokey · 31/10/2023 19:42

We've just finished it and I have questions.... Spoilers below.... Though I think we already have them

What happened to Iris in jail in 1891? How did she know Shahara's name if none of it happened?

By Elias not pressing the button, presumably he erased the time line so there's no bomb under the building and Shahara wouldn't have been in the future to meet Iris.

Confused!

Gothambutnotahamster · 31/10/2023 19:48

Elias did press the button (on his phone after he was rejected by his mum)

No idea how Iris is in 2023 though!

Not the second time though. When older Shahara was there too he tore up the paper with the phone number on it.

Gothambutnotahamster · 31/10/2023 20:16

I must have missed that bit @DappledThings ?! Think I need to rewatch!

Stokey · 31/10/2023 20:38

He didn't press it in the last episode which is why he disappeared. He couldn't have gone back to become his own great- grandfather.

Yes that was the sacrifice “the biggest unfairness of all” that old Mannix was talking about. Not pressing the button would mean sacrificing his own existence.

I just tried to explain what confused me but I can't actually put it into words 😂

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/10/2023 23:16

I can forgive the iffy accent as I like Iris's quirkiness, they could have easily written in a explanation ie she moved to London as a teenager and the brother could have been an ex boyfriend instead. That would have made more sense.

Did anyone else notice the KYAL sign on the building in the very last scene?

Also the flyers for Pollys concert in Karl's last scene (when he didn't die!)

They are definitely setting up for another season, I hope it doesn't go the way of Dark which got so complicated and convoluted I gave up.

GalileoHumpkins · 01/11/2023 19:42

I don't think there's going to be another season.

I'm confused about the loop part. Stephen Graham goes back in time and has a baby with Polly, then that baby has a baby who has a baby, etc, and then eventually Stephen Graham is born from that line. But how can he exist in the first place to go back in time and become his own ancestor? It's like a reverse grandfather paradox.

The loop bit was the most annoying part for me (accents aside) because you can't be your own ancestor.

I guess it's some kind of nod to the theory that time is not linear, that we perceive it in a linear way as part of our human condition, and that past, present and future exist simultaneously.

https://www.space.com/29859-the-illusion-of-time.html

I guess if this theory was understood by the characters in the film then they wouldn't be so shocked at time travel. It is weird that Elias being his own grandfather is just accepted by the characters as being completely plausible.

I imagine it to be a plot device to make Elias disappear if he doesn't detonate and to show what a sacrifice he has made. Such a shame.

On another point, I guess Elias grows up to be powerful because of the cult established by Julian in 1890.

Thank god for that. Just finished episode 5 and haven't got a clue what's going on. I only keep watching it because every 10 minutes one of the characters says they'll 'explain everything'.

IAmtheVampiresWife · 02/11/2023 02:30

I think this is what I couldn't explain or get my head around - the loop part!

GoldenKiwi · 02/11/2023 17:26

I loved this. Much easier to understand than Dark!

So do you think the ending is meant to mean something? Or did the writers just put it in as a hook for season 2? But it's a 'limited series' which means there is no season 2, right?!?

I cannot work out why Iris would have been in that cab.

Stokey · 02/11/2023 18:48

I read an interview with them where they said they wanted to keep the possibility of a second series open - hence Iris in the cab and the KYAL on the building. So basically the final scene is just messing with us!

SummerWillow · 03/11/2023 08:55

Maybe Iris split and went back into multiple time zones similarly to the professor?? Who knows? Would be pleased to have another series.

KYAL on the building in 2023 definitely made me assume they were heading for a second series.

DH went to school with the writer but sadly not even FB friends so can't ask him!
