The dialogue is not exactly inspiring, but there are some lovely properties featured. And yes, I'm aware of how middle-aged that makes me sound.

I'm afraid I just about lost it with the cushion scene. The noises he was making! How did he know he was humping the one that she'd touched and not the one on his son's side of the bed? I don't think I've ever seen anything less sexy in my life.

EmmaEmerald · 14/04/2023 10:06

Thanks for answering the cushion question!

just looked at trailer and IMDB, woman playing Anna looks familiar.

Knullrufs · 14/04/2023 10:12

Oh god. I thought the cultural push to make Richard Armitage sexy had gone away 10 years ago. But he's back!

I like him as an audiobook narrator. He's a decent actor most of the time. But he needs to stop doing this sub-1980s-Michael-Douglas shite.

She plays Anne in Happy Valley, and as I recall, she was Anne in that drama about the Brontes a few years ago. She must have a thing for the name.

HermioneWeasley · 14/04/2023 10:22

Read an interview with RA about doing this. He comes across as nice but dim and very easily persuaded that being naked is essential to the plot/the character etc. I remember him saying similar about getting his kit off in The Crucible - that he’d had reservations until the direction explained it was a metaphor for the underlying vulnerability of his character or some such transparent lie. 😁

Ah, thank you!

I thought it was Noomi Rapace when I saw the trailer, she looks so similar!

Pahpahpotato · 14/04/2023 13:57

I’ve just started watching and honestly I wish I’d read this first. There’s no chemistry at all and everything is so bloody cringey 🤣 I normally fancy Richard armitage a bit but he’s just.. icky in this. Also that astonishingly unsexy scene of undressing each other and him going for the whole of, what, 20 seconds before bellowing like a stuck bullock in her ear and then flopping onto the floor.

All of you hiding behind a cushion but watching to the end - loving your work! Grin

I don't want to have cushions anywhere near my face after watching this, thanks very much!

Amrapaali · 14/04/2023 15:41

I lasted all of 10 minutes. Was so cringey!! Felt like a TV show built by numbers.

The comments here are more interesting.

SapatSea · 14/04/2023 16:07

It felt kind of retro (and not in a good way) like weird relationship dramas that were on TV in the 1970's such as A Bouquet of Barbed Wire. Loved Indira Varma's clothes.

I think William sniffed out Anna's scent on the cushion. That scene was very "acting class" and curiously boring and dull.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/04/2023 16:10

That review by Lucy Mangan is brilliant! I shan't be bothering with this thanks to the wise MNs on this thread Smile.

Bullshot · 14/04/2023 16:16

Hah!! Just watching this now! What the heck is he up to in the hotel room !!

orangeflags · 14/04/2023 16:40

Wasn't that a film with Jeremy Irons in donkeys years ago? That was pretty ghastly if I remember correctly too

SapatSea · 14/04/2023 18:47

Yes Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche and Miranda Richardson - also execrable!
Thankfully the 4 episodes were fairly short!

benfoldsfivefan · 14/04/2023 19:55

I haven’t seen the TV adaptation but have seen the film a few times. Funnily enough, the two leads in the film - Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche - also had zero chemistry. It’s not a great film but it’s worth a watch for the superb performance from Miranda Richardson.

orangeflags · 14/04/2023 19:56

Miranda Richardson is invariably excellent

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/04/2023 20:22

Iirc there was similar amounts of cringeing about Jeremy Irons at the time. It's the same old trope of much older man and younger woman that feels very ick to most sensible people. It's like an older man's sleazy fantasy - and very outdated.

I really loved that film, and the book. I once had a very intense relationship like that, and it rang so true

AlwaysGinPlease · 14/04/2023 20:47

I must watch this. I have always had a thing for RA. Swoon.

I also have a thing for him, but he didn't do it for me in this. Much better to re-watch him in Vicar of Dibley and keep that memory alive forever 😁

Aquarius1234 · 14/04/2023 21:21

I never understood how actors can be good in one thing and terrible the next.
I mean it's a drama about two people having a torrid twisted affair. Why can't they get that right!!
I weirdly liked Damage as odd as it was. Maybe Jeremy Iron and Juliett are the convincing actors that could do it?
Shame as its a re make that could have at least been alright...

Aquarius1234 · 14/04/2023 21:24

Excuse the typos.
Damage was good and awful at the same time. It was like watching something you weren't allowed to secretly late at night.
Its annoying as every other drama is crime police stuff. And the stuff that isn't gets 1 star reviews..

JamSandle · 14/04/2023 21:25

I really enjoyed this for what it was. Don't really get the criticism!

JamSandle · 14/04/2023 21:43

I also thought Charlie Murphy looked absolutely gorgeous in this!
