Catherine didn't seem interested in Nev at all really or his food !
What she was like with Richard is also a mystery too. They seem very mismatched to be honest
I watched clocking off with Sarah lancashire playing a single mum , hard as nails there too and the Clare actress was in it too! They both looked so young

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/01/2023 09:11

How had I not made that connection! 😂😂😂

Totally forgot he was 'Bob'

What? Did Clare and Nev have a thing????? How did I miss/forget that????

Crumpetdisappointment · 30/01/2023 09:18

Rita Sue and Bob too ! @WinterFoxes

Poor Catherine. She’s even lost the support of this thread.

Not me!

I'm still Team Catherine

Clare doesn't like Nev ! She isn't into him
No more than Catherine is
Although I have watched Rita Sue and Bob too I don't remember him in it

Poke · 29/01/2023 22:39

The look between Poppy and neckbeard. 😮 She’s going to get him sent down (even if not for murder.)

Something is there. Poppy knows something extra.

I think so, too.

crumpet · 30/01/2023 09:23

What is interesting in the discussion about Catherine is that I don’t think we’d be having it if she was a man - the bluntness (rudeness), lack of gentleness etc whilst under so much pressure.

WinterFoxes · 30/01/2023 09:23

BarryStyles · 30/01/2023 00:37

@EmmaEmerald agree! I thought he was terrifying in series 1 - the scene where he killed Kirsten, and with Ann, and with Ryan on the boat. Couldn’t believe it when I recognised him as the nice vicar cycling round Grantchester! 🤣

now he’s famous for being so posh and nice it’s harder to believe him as TLR - and agree he looks too healthy, he needs the shit hair and clothes from series 1 again.

(i may be over invested, and have just watched the first 2 series again so am an expert in all things HV)

Nah. Even in S1 I thought, oh James, you look so wholesome. So well nourished. Never had that ratty raised-on-crisps look about him. And so athletic. I've met/worked with TLR characters and even the physically fit ones never look healthy. James Norton always looks like he's acting, like if you got up close he;d smell of Fairy non bio.

HannaHat · 30/01/2023 09:28

Fairy non bio 😂

Just got the episode on again as I tidy up, it's heartbreaking how she doesn't respond to Ryan's I love you 😭
And Daniel should have told Ann to STFU, she went way overboard with Ryan 😤

EyesOnThePies · 30/01/2023 09:28

I don’t think TLR is after Ann.
His while mission is Catherine, he believes she killed his Mum, she caught him, she (in his mind) is keeping his son from him. It’s a personal stand off.

As it is for Catherine.

Unfortunately, as in all the classical tragedies, (Othello, Macbeth etc) Catherine’s uncontrolled personality flaw will be her weakness. Personally I would not have left Ryan with Claire, Neil and Nev-in-his-slippers with an OCG-backed TLR on the loose. But her broken heart and desire for revenge on TLR has led her to leave them, and defy orders and go back to work.

This will lead to a heroic triumph, OR tragic downfall.

heartbroken22 · 30/01/2023 09:31

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding Catherine. She's had a big shock being backstabbed by her own sister and grandson meeting TLR. She's got it in her head and that's all she's focused on. Like what's going to happen next with Ryan? Is he going to see more of his dad? Think he's a good person? She's been triggered and we see her put her defence on like a brick wall. She's worried about the safety of her family. Yeah Ryan needs love but so does Catherine. She's got no one to rely on for emotional support. She's feels kicked out just like Ryan. Clare her closest family backstabbed her. It will take years to rebuild her trust.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 30/01/2023 09:31

It just clicked with me that when Mark Stanley played the trans woman Jamie in the series about the register office a few years ago, the woman who plays Joanne was in that as well. (Ashley Jensen played a ridiculous character called Kate in that who was a total liability)

Busting TLR out just to have him sitting around a dingy room seems a bit of a waste of an episode.

Couldn’t disagree more! It was a phenomenal, counter-intuitive piece of writing. The most dangerous man in the North wrapped up in chintz, playing a crappy video game.

And that line about the gears on the bike being poetry! Just amazing to … humanise him like that. And the way he was there, tethered, and they made us stare at his beautiful face and shudder at the evil piled up in his head. It was properly, properly chilling.

Can I just say this is perfectly expressed - lovely post.

The "banality of evil", the human face of this vile man - and the "in-a-heartbeat" psychotic one, too. Brutal, psychotic, narcissistic people have their human side too - and that's what makes them so very dangerous.

The writing in this series is so subtle, and the characters so real. It makes you realise how it is that abusers etc get away with it . Even on here, after all we've witnessed, there are people defending Neckbeard, feeling sorry for Pfizer, blaming the victim.

I am prepared to suspend disbelief that the police would/wouldn't do X, Y, Z etc because the rest of it is so sublime regarding the complexity of the human condition

Rhondaa · 30/01/2023 09:34

You can see how Tommy and our Ryan escaping to Eldorado and living happily ever may be temtping for a 16yr old, given the unrelenting stress of his home life. Norton is so good at making him likeable what t'quilt wrapped round him and looking all intense like.

As for Richard leaving him for a meeting the very same day they'd witnessed the break out Confused

Beetroot man is quite scary I wouldn't want to mess with him.

Also surely there'd have been police at Nev's and folk checking the WiFi use for attempts to communicate. They don't seem to be taking his escape that seriously protection wise. Hiding at Nev's seems to be the grand total plan wise.

Quite good though all in all.

EyesOnThePies · 30/01/2023 09:34

P.S likewise TLR’s mission will be the end of him.

He COULD disappear quietly into the criminal exiles of Marbella but he won’t because his mission to get Ryan and Do For Catherine makes him a risk. Darius recognises this. The vagueness of ‘when you get your boy’. Spinning TLR a line, and TLR too wrapped up in his desire for revenge that he didn’t see it.

spiderlight · 30/01/2023 09:35

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 30/01/2023 00:43

Steve Pemberton played an accountant who was bankrupt or something and he set that up as I recall but how did the Steve Pemberton character get involved with Tommy? It's been 9 years so I don't remember it all.

He had a caravan on Ashley's site. Ashley, some other bloke and TLR were moving drugs, and a bag got dropped while he was talking to Ashley (about his initial idea a watered-down version of the kidnapping of Ann) and he saw it, so they got all threatening and basically forced him into the situation where he had to go through with the kidnap, with much higher stakes, or they'd hurt him to make sure he kept quiet. TLR was new to Ashley's employment, having just got out of prison, and the other bloke was already saying he didn't trust him and he was a psycho.

Yes. He should get out, keep his head down communicate with Ryan send him a ticket for a 'holiday' then return at a later date to wreak revenge when folks guard were down.

heartbroken22 · 30/01/2023 09:39

I feel like they've left Faisal's panick about the murder a bit too later whereas last series it was bang murder and worrying all throughout the rest.

FlyRobinFly · 29/01/2023 22:51

Crazy theory which I don’t expect to happen but want to share it anyway.

TLR raped Joanna during his stint of freedom in 2014 and concieved Poppy. This is when Joanna’s diazepam addiction began (in this theory, I don’t believe we’ve been given a timeline on the show) as a way of coping. Neckbeard has known Poppy is TLR’s all this time hence the bullying of Ryan because he sees him as TLR. Neckbeard being the twat he is has allowed his anger about the attack on Joanna to manfiest as increasing his abuse toward Joanna and emotionally neglecting Poppy, acting like she doesn’t exist. TLR probably doesn’t know Poppy is his. Neckbeard will see TLR’s escape on the news and assume TLR did it.

Can't agree with this. In the first (?) episode Neckbeard strokes Poppy's anorak sleeve (IIRC) and says gently "Take your coat off sweetheart" (she doesn't) as he is on the way to the kitchen to give his wife hell.

I think he grooms his own girls - perhaps Florence is getting to old for him, or Poppy is just getting to the right age.

the80sweregreat · 30/01/2023 09:39

What Clare and Neil did to her is unforgivable.
Ryan should have been told no and that's it
at 18 he could have gone on his own.
Daniel should have told Ann to be quiet too
Or toned it down a bit
Although he did need to be told I suppose
Tough one , but there is a way of telling people and that's not it. Plus she is as bitter and upset as Catherine ( understandably so)
Everyone has had it in for Ryan from day one , Daniel and Richard both didn't want anything to do with him much for years too.
It's all very sad to be honest and all to do with LTR

My parents house is similar to Nev’s (but not quite the size on Sandringham) the thick walls and layout make it virtually sound proof. As teenaged boyfriend based escapades can attest.

Your secret is safe with me 😉

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/01/2023 09:44

Testina · 29/01/2023 23:09

I don’t think Ryan will do anything big and heroic - he’s just a 16yo kid, and not a very bright one at that. But I think he will reject TLR at some point in the episode and that will be a huge trigger point.

I reckon Beetroot Chopper We Have Fucking Wifi will get fed up of TLR’s bossiness and hold him down with a paring knife to his throat whilst Alison double de-clutches him 👍🏻

I have to admit that I was rather wondering if Beetroot Man would do something - I wouldn't pee him off, I can promise you that!

AntonDuPig · 30/01/2023 09:48

<Just back from the quickest school drop off ever. Settles down with share bag of kettle chips for an in-depth re watch>

I love Beetroot Man! The fact that he took no sh*t from TLR from the off -
*He kept him waiting
*He look of disdain he gave him
*The way he handled that knife
His monosyllabic responses until… ”Yes. I even got f*king wi-fi”!

Legend 😂

Anyone else have their doubts about this mythical house in Marbella?

Yes- I think TLR has outlived his usefulness to Darius and has now become a liability.

When he was in jail he could, at any time, have shopped them regarding at least one (and possibly more) murder, and he knows something about how they get drugs into the country, too. He was perhaps too well protected in jail for them to do much about him.

But now - especially when he is insisting on this vendetta with Catherine (which is going to cause trouble for all of them), and he will be demanding this, that and the other, he is vulnerable. THEY are the ones with the power. Beetroot man could cut his throat in the middle of the night (you can see he would like to), and they'd have no problems getting rid of another body. No-one would even know TLR was dead. They'd just spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders and worrying.

I'd like a bit of mad dramatic action, though, so am keeping my fingers crossed.
