Sarah Lancashire is fabulous in this program and I hope she gets a lot of awards for this part.

I think that Catherine is coming to the end of a long police career and is still dealing with the pettiness in the organisation. Then she has always had to be the strong one. I think she is a person who has just come to the end of the road of dealing with everything and sorting out every ones mistakes.
Ryan now knows the truth about his father and just what Catherine did for him over the year's. He did say it must be sad to be like his father.
I did notice his father telling him how nice the bike was to ride and I think he mentioned looking at the scenery at x. Did Ryan ask him are you in Halifax which could be the nearest town to their? Is Ryan chatting to his father to get information that will help Catherine and the police get him?
I also think that Ryan's father did a lot for Daris but Daris told him no guns. I also think Daris knows if he kills Catherine things will get a lot worse for him. Is Daris just going to bring him to Spain or does he want him dead because of what he knows and did for Daris?

I saw that several endings were filmed as the BBC did not want the ending to become public knowledge.

Not the most interesting episode tonight and felt a bit annoyed with the way TLR said telephone,
very exaggerated and drawn out.
I know us Yorkshire folk often sound drawn out but not to that level

But that had nothing to do with a typical Yorkshire accent. That was him being a patronising arsehole to his foreign “host”.

BarryStyles · 30/01/2023 00:37

@EmmaEmerald agree! I thought he was terrifying in series 1 - the scene where he killed Kirsten, and with Ann, and with Ryan on the boat. Couldn’t believe it when I recognised him as the nice vicar cycling round Grantchester! 🤣

now he’s famous for being so posh and nice it’s harder to believe him as TLR - and agree he looks too healthy, he needs the shit hair and clothes from series 1 again.

(i may be over invested, and have just watched the first 2 series again so am an expert in all things HV)

Anne’s dad. Anne who was kidnapped for ransom and raped by TLR.

Steve Pemberton played an accountant who was bankrupt or something and he set that up as I recall but how did the Steve Pemberton character get involved with Tommy? It's been 9 years so I don't remember it all.

duc748 · 30/01/2023 00:44

I think as far as Clare goes, there are a lot more Clares than Catherines in the world. Catherine is nails, and most people aren't. She's kept her shit together, just about, when most of us would be losing it.

WinnieFosterReads · 30/01/2023 00:44

I found tonight's episode quite emotional especially when Ann told Ryan the truth about his dad and when Ryan and Daniel had the chat in the car. So many of them are trying to do the 'right' thing but it's so difficult.

He was Nevs accountant and asked a bloke he new - thingy armstrong? - to arrange it. Thingy was employing TLR as a labourer and then TLR took control of the plan and went all psycho

Surely Faisal is a more likely bio father for Poppy? Joanne was having sex with him for drugs. Her hair is much darker than Florence’s, Jo’s or neckbeards’s.

Florence and Poppy, or the mini actors who play them, are real life siblings.

Oh yes Ashley. He got bumped off in his car at the traffic lights.

funnelfan · 30/01/2023 00:55

Another nice touch I thought was the bald police boss who was supportive and considerate towards Catherine, and who ran the meeting about the murder in a competent manner, is the one of the pair of “twats” in the opening of the first episode. No one is ever fully good or bad in this series. Fully rounded characterisation all the way throughm, like Ryan’s coat slipping to the floor and left there. That one happens all the time in our household, very teenage boy thing!!

I can understand why Catherine acts the way she does but it’s not carte blanche to treat everyone in her life like shit, forcing them to walk on eggshells around her, giving people the silent treatment, and then when she does speak to them she’s absolutely vile. When your confused, messed up 16 year old grandson desperate for any sort of indication she loves him, doesn’t regret him, has any scrap of love at all. When he says granny I love you fucking say it back! He isn’t being drawn towards TLR as much as he’s being pushed towards him.

I like this post. There's too much fawning over Catherine. I actually don't like the character. I think Sarah Lancashire plays her well, I love watching her and admire the character in many ways but not all. That doesn't mean I have to like her. She's not a saint.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/01/2023 01:09

I'd make a terrible criminal on the run. One look at that filthy cruddy bed in the safe house and I'd have trotted back to prison.

funnelfan · 30/01/2023 01:15

I’ve worked with several women in the mold of Catherine throughout my career - highly competent, blunt and no time for bluffers or bullshit. Generally they’ve terrified all my male colleagues, even the senior ones, and they’ve shoved me in the firing line instead. Which amuses me no end as I never had any problem with them or they with me, probably because I’m reasonably competent and if I don’t know something I’m not afraid to say “I’m not sure but I’ll go and find out and get back to you ASAP”.

Possibly also because I’m old and northern, and grew up in a working class matriarchal society where real life versions of characters like Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner could be found everywhere. I think there are echoes of them in Catherine, particularly in her lashing out at everyone as everything goes to shit. Fantastic writing.

No one's calling her a saint though

I think the great thing about Catherine as a character is you want her sort to exist IRL to help all the troubled souls when most people would give up. I can't imagine really wanting to be mates with her. Massive respect for her, love to have her living in my street as I'd feel like it was much safer with her around. But liking her doesn't come into it.

i think she's like a hero that many of us want to believe in. So we root for her because we want that type to exist.

I thought James Norton was great in Lady Chatterley's Lover, but I think I first saw him onstage. That's going to bug me, trying to remember.

FlyRobinFly · 29/01/2023 23:00

Fair enough, still wouldn’t be surprised by a twist about Poppy’s paternity though (to explain the tension between her and Neckbeard) and they will have to link this story to the main story at some point so why not through TLR? Even if the finer details are completely different, maybe he knows Poppy isn’t his but not the details.

As I said won’t happen but not completely out of the realms of possibility.

I had a thought a couple of weeks ago that Faisal could be Poppy's dad. She's got quite dark hair and complexion and could easily be dual-heritage.

Optimist1 · 30/01/2023 06:02

I was thinking about Alison - wasn't she staying at Catherine's place? Will TLR go there? She'd put up a good fight.

TealIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/01/2023 06:40

Sooooo much to unpack - I barely breathed in that episode and I probably need to watch it again. Random musings time:

  1. teacher has been released pending further inquiries - I can’t believe he’d be allowed to live with his kids, from child protection to influencing their potential witness testimony.
  2. when showing the Misper guy around the garage Teacher instantly spotted something was wrong with that suitcase - what? Is it not his? Did Faisal go fetch it from his own home and will that show up in someone’s ring doorbell?
  3. wee Poppy will play a vital role
  4. how creepy was it to learn that teacher had groomed his own wife when she was at school?
  5. ryan only heard the word love from one person tonight, but I think he is seeing through TLR’s words and understanding actions instead. I think he is setting up TLR.
  6. hard to imagine the lack of protection and coordination in safe housing the key witnesses, like Richard swanning off and Catherine being the co-ordination of it all. And hard to imagine Nev’s house - given TLR kidnapped and taped Nev’s daughter - as being classed as unknown and therefore safe territory.
  7. I’m in awe about all the red herrrings.

CapturedLeprechaun · 30/01/2023 00:08

But TLR didn't say he was going after Catherine. In the whole conversation he said he wanted to get revenge on "that policewoman". Could it not be Ann he wants revenge on? And they're fooling us because we all assume it's Catherine but he wants to get Ann? Because TLR would know that would hurt Catherine more than going after her directly anyway

Very true. Good point. I didn't even think of Ann but that's a possibility indeed.

1AngelicFruitCake · 30/01/2023 07:07

I love how Claire is played because it’s so subtle, the little looks, the concerned face, she could really overplay it and she doesn’t.

No - Alison has a flat in the same block where the OCG's dumb thugs were cuckooing the woman who died falling from the window. She was at Catherine's working on the land rover to fit a new alternator.

I think that the OCG might try to finish him off. TLR has served his purpose and he needs to be gone. He's been their puppet, just a hunch.

This. I think it's more realistic that Darius kills TLR than anyone else. He seems pissed about TLR going after Catherine and I think they'll see him as a liability now.

Sidge · 30/01/2023 07:28

TLR doesn’t know Ann is a copper though does he? So he can’t mean her when we all think it’s Catherine?

I think next week is going to be spectacular!

Crumpetdisappointment · 30/01/2023 07:30

did we ever see how TLR hurt his forehead?
