First thread is nearly full but please check if still room to post by going to www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4710280-happy-valley-series-3-bbc1-9pm-starts-1-january-2023-no-spoilers-tv-pace?page=40

And once it is welcome to everyone. Looking forward to any number of theories and learning things one never wanted to know about like tiny phones.

I wonder if Joyce recognised Jo’s name as the daughter of a hitherto-unseen close friend, tells Catherine that Jo is X’s daughter who has lost touch with her since she married that awful bloke, X always suspected abuse but couldn’t get Jo to open up blah blah, which sends Catherine back to the house in the hope of getting Jo to talk to her while Evil PE Teacher is at work, and either finds the body or at least something suspicious.

To whoever asked upthread if Catherine isn’t allowed to hit the little scrote she was arresting because he hit her first…she can use reasonable force but two punches to the head wouldn’t be classed as “reasonable”. The police are trained in restraint and she’d be expected to use her taser or some other approved method rather than tit-for-tat violence which could have killed him. She was taking out the frustrations of an utterly shitty few days on him rather than acting as a dispassionate upholder of the law. I absolutely don’t blame her, but when she first punched him I actually moaned “oh no Catherine, he’s not worth your career”.

TrentCrimm · 19/01/2023 07:57

and it sounded as though Claire said “No, but he means more to me than you” but she actually said “Nobody means more to me than you

I've been sitting on my hands because I think Siobhan Finneran is an awesome actor, BUT she hasn't got the accent quite right.

She's got the err sound (err nerr, yelloe snerr! etc) but the way she says 'door' and 'nobody' is a bit off... that's why I think there's some confusion in the above phrase, she pronounces it nobuddy which isn't quite authentic

I started Last Tango In Halifax last night and even dh was happy to watch the second episode after the first one (he normally hates watching shows with lots of episodes). More great writing!

We did this a couple of weeks ago and exactly the same DH was happy to start despite there being loads to watch. Really enjoying it. I even caught him dabbing his eyes last night

Ha ha! My dh actually laughed out loud in a few places - normally he's twitching with boredom

Tango was good!

If Catherine Cawood doesn't drive off into the sunset with her full pension at the end of all this, I think I'll start a petition or crowd fund her ( once I work out how to do it !)
I hope Sally Wainwright doesn't let me down.
Although it might just end up a Cliff hanger for series four ? .. who knows ?

Yes the80s great minds and all that! I was thinking of a GoFundMe. Catherine has the hopes of so many women resting on her!

StellaAndCrow · 19/01/2023 15:18

I started watching Rose and Maloney (on Amazon Prime) - Sarah Lancashire is a main character along with Phil Davies, as a duo investigating possible miscarriages of justice. She's a lawyer by background in it I think. It's from about 20 years ago, and it's interesting as you can see flashes in the character of both Raquel (from Coronation Street) and Catherine Cawood.

EdieLedwell · 19/01/2023 15:23

Slight detour. Has anyone seen Con Oneill in "Our Flag means death"?

He looks...dare I say it?

Kind of hot.

I don't think the teacher is planning to groom the grandson. I think he was just happy with the Information that his dad was in prison to hold it over Catherine in case she meddles in his business with his wife. Hubby is also watching this never got that vibe. Its so nice to be able watch something we both like. We normally watch totally different genres of TV.

I think he is already grooming - the bit of getting Ryan to share personal info, then sharing HIS OWN personal info ("not a good marriage") - making Ryan feel special, they're sharing something, a secret no one else knows. To me that's grooming, at least the start of it.

Haha, oh I fancied him in Dancing Thru the Dark (a poor quality one is on YouTube):

midsomermurderess · 19/01/2023 15:38

I find CIN O’Neill’s voice a bit odd, unexpectedly highly pitched.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 19/01/2023 15:45

Oh man, Neil's voice is like nails down a chalkboard.

JaneJeffer · 19/01/2023 15:47

I remember when he was classed as a hunk back in the day but it's a no from me - the hairy back yuck!

duc748 · 19/01/2023 15:54

I remember Rose and Maloney! I liked it, but as I recall, they only made a handful of episodes.

EdieLedwell · 19/01/2023 16:00

HIs voice lends itself well to this character. Very sinister.

I don't mind the hairy back but the scratchy voice is a no go for me.

the80sweregreat · 19/01/2023 16:01

Neils voice is unusual

I loved Rose and Maloney.

Phil Davis is a wonderful actor, too.

It's good we don't all go for the same type, isn't it? 😀

the80sweregreat · 19/01/2023 16:09

No, I'm not getting heart throb vibes from the actor , even when he was younger and I've been known to like some unusual looking actors etc.
Maybe it's just this particular character I don't like much ? When he was half naked at that pub series two , it was just horrible , but then I hate seeing men without tops on outside that's not a beach , even fit ones.
( not that I'm fussy or anything ! ) lol
Men should cover up in public. Should be the law.

EdieLedwell · 19/01/2023 16:15

He's not a heartthrob but I found myself unexpectedly intrigued. I didn't see him as this type of character at all.

He was vile in Chernobyl.

the80sweregreat · 19/01/2023 16:22

I don't remember him in Chernobyl
I do recall the Trevor actor from EE in
The 90s , another horrible one

JaneJeffer · 19/01/2023 16:23

He was such a good actor @the80sweregreat
