No, I think that's too subtle for the average TV viewer. Him keeping things locked up is central to the story imo.
I am enjoying watching this so much but afaic, Sally Wainwright has skirted around some big character holes in the story (and character is plot for us ancients who remember our Thomas Hardy GCSE English exams) - i) Claire would not betray her sister to this extent, not really and ii) Catherine would not keep the truth from Ryan to this extent either. Not to the extent where she would rather kick him out at 16 years old rather than finally talk to him about the truth (or her truth anyway).
But we all have to suspend our disbelief a lot when watching TV drama. As I said, I am enjoying it hugely and am full of admiration for all involved. But the gushing is getting a bit much now.
It's not a patch on Better Call Saul if anyone who hasn't seen it wants an epic TV series to watch.
