This is an interesting theory. I can’t quite see the teacher being involved in drug dealing, but who know. Maybe that would explain the house, car, flash clothes etc?

Yes. I posted the same theory a couple of days ago:

What is the PE teacher grooming boys for? It's not sex, I think he was taunted about his affair with Mrs Oats in Ep 1 just to underline that he's heterosexual.

He is in the drugs gang. He is grooming the drugs sellers in the county lines tradition. Mark my words 😉

Someone needs to unlock that fridge

Another good spot @JaneJeffer

duc748 · 18/01/2023 14:37

I could be wrong, but the idea that Rob is keeping a big stash of drucks in his own kitchen (even in a locked fridge) is a bit of a stretch, I think.

the80sweregreat · 18/01/2023 14:54

Rob might have called the police on his wife because he suspected that the pharmacist is dodgy , but couldn't actually prove it ? He knew they can trace numbers on the packets etc.
They are neighbours , he might have noticed something?
I can't think why else he did that ?
Especially if he is up to something himself , why call the police and have them in his house ?
It Doesn't make any sense , plus Jo didn't even try to cover up her marks on her face either.
I don't think she will survive this.
He might be a county drug recruiter, but they usually keep the police away , not ring them up
It's a mystery

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2023 14:56

I think he did it to humiliate her because he felt humiliated by being told she didn't pick the kids up from school.

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2023 15:30

You never know what's in there

I was thinking the big house, flash car, grooming of troubled
boys would be county lines recruitment too. But zoning in on Ryan when he was introduced to his Robocop gran last week seems to be inviting trouble.

Due to this thread I'm watching Last tango in Halifax, (Joyce is in it) and the farmhouse appears to bed the one in HV and also used in Scott and Bailey

IwantToRetire · 18/01/2023 16:23

re Catherine and Ryan

She has always been hard on him. Sort of not only did I have to take you on, the son of the man I hate, but you might turn out bad as well.

As someone said up thread, Clare is the one who is more caring.

Its almost like Catherine hates Ryan, not just because of Becky but because she now organises her life around being his (grand)parent.

She is after all very judgemental about everyone, family, colleagues, criminals!

For instance she decided he shouldn't be told about his mother . Then in a recent episode he was asking what had happened, she was adamant that she knew it was better he wasn't told and should just trust her. And was angry enough that he hadn't just accepted what she said about TLR, that she threw Ryan out of the house.

I said in one of the threads talking about rewatching series 1 and 2, she must be impossible to live with. She is quick to say what other people do wrong, but never seems to reflect on what she might have done wrong.

This is the world through Catherine's eyes. And you better learn to go with it.

Catherine is carrying a lot of guilt
Anyone losing someone to suicide feels differently to anyone grieving someone who died of natural causes.
I agree that she is spiky and unreasonable and rarely sees the other persons point of view
She has more of a ' male brain ' than a female one!

That's really weird! Ryan has been friends with him from the beginning too

This is very strange. A little clue perhaps?

sensechec · 18/01/2023 17:26

Please explain why it's an odd why to describe him?! I'm missing something

I wouldn't say he's a mobster?

HannaHat · 18/01/2023 17:28

Cesco is a 16 year old schoolboy, certainly not a lobster as we know him.

HannaHat · 18/01/2023 17:28

He's not a mobster. Or a lobster.

Greatly · 18/01/2023 17:29

He's definitely not a lobster

But is Cesko an Albanian name like the Knesovics??

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2023 17:29

He's your lobster Grin

sensechec · 18/01/2023 17:31

Ok get it now, I agree.

HannaHat · 18/01/2023 17:31

We've had a slight (phone) introduction to Cesco's mum too this season. Catherine wondered how the mystery man knew which school Ryan went to when he passed TLR's info to Ryan.

Very interesting

EmilyDickinson · 18/01/2023 17:45

I assumed that Cesco was short for Francesco.

Ive been thinking about Catherine heading off to the Himalayas leaving 16 year old Ryan wondering what was going to happen to him and also about how hard she is on him sometimes. I don’t think it’s entirely about the connection with TLR.

In the first series Claire talks about how she and Catherine lost their parents (first one and then the other) when Claire was 13 and Catherine 15 and that Catherine had then brought Claire up. In fact with one parent dying before Catherine was 15 (I think it was her mum) she was probably parenting Claire to some extent even before 15.

It must have been incredibly hard on her though seeing what she’s like now I imagine she rose to the challenge.

But in effect Catherine had to be an adult at 15. I wonder if she compares 16 year old Ryan with the life she lived at 15, orphaned and with responsibility for a younger sibling, and perhaps expects more of him than other people would. Maybe she thinks he is, or ought to be off her hands now and heading off to the Himalayas is her way of forcing the chick out of the nest.

In truth, most families would see a 16 year old as still very much needing looking after, but Catherine’s childhood experiences were very different. I feel sad for how strong 15 year old Catherine had to be.

Towntroubadour · 18/01/2023 17:47

I wonder if Neckbeard shopped his wife as he’s in with the drug gang and knew Faisal was supplying drugs to his wife so figured he could use that for the gang to pressure Faisal into working for them.

My mum decided I was an adult at 13 so I agree with your take

the80sweregreat · 18/01/2023 18:00

Maybe CC thinks Ryan will he fine because his a boy ? I have some friends who treat their boys differently to girls. Just a musing there.
16 is young to be left alone though and I wouldn't have done it to my sons ! Or maybe Clare saying ' I loved him more than you ' hit a big nerve there, well you have him then attitude?

fairypeasant · 18/01/2023 18:15

Clare says to Catherine "no one means more to me than you" not "I love him more than you."
