First thread is nearly full but please check if still room to post by going to www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4710280-happy-valley-series-3-bbc1-9pm-starts-1-january-2023-no-spoilers-tv-pace?page=40

And once it is welcome to everyone. Looking forward to any number of theories and learning things one never wanted to know about like tiny phones.

There's a good podcast on bbc sounds called Obsessed With happy valley - apologies if everyone knows this already!

It's a bit rambly, but quite entertaining. I particularly liked the reference to Chekhov's clutch in the last episode!

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/01/2023 11:17

Thanks @IwantToRetire

Id recommend the Shrinepod one for Happy Valley as well. I started when they were dissecting Line of Duty and they are so entertaining at this kind of thing.

Lots of stuff that I didn’t pick up on as well.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 13/01/2023 12:30

Both obsessed with and shrine are well worth a listen! I enjoy both, shrine does a bit more speculation, obsessed with seems a little less analytical.

Re the phones, I read The Governor by Vanessa Frake recently, she's a former governor at wormwood scrubs, and she spoke about how phones are the most problematic contraband in prison and they go to great lengths to stop the prisoners having them but they go further and further in efforts to get them in. She spoke about one visitor bringing in five phones during one visit.

I was fairly shocked by the number she'd concealed up herself when I read the book and only marginally less so now I have seen the tiny arse phone!

Thanks for the new thread @IwantToRetire

How the heck do they retrieve the phones when they're visiting someone in full view of everyone??

I suspect once through security they go to the loo to retrieve rather than go rummaging around their nether regions in the visitors hall

I don't know - I read somewhere that as there are few POs observing they often just wait until they glance away to rummage in their f*nnies and extract the merchandise. I daresay you'd fasten the bag with a string, like a tampon, and it would easily be removed.

Threadkillacilla · 13/01/2023 12:57

Ow do.

The one in the book was fraudulently claiming to be a legal representative so she was getting to see prisoners in private where she could have a rummage and provide them with their phone.

I wonder whether an arse phone was worth less than a fanny phone 🤔

If I remember correctly she'd managed to squeeze in some drugs too!

FunctionalSkills · 13/01/2023 13:42

Posting in anticipation...

I probably won't hear any podcasts so any interesting points welcomed!

VivaDixie · 13/01/2023 13:59

Does anyone remember Prisoners wives from about 10 years ago? They had a scene with an older woman trying to smuggle drugs in for her son... (went wrong...)

I loved that show!!
The image this thread is building! A little bag with a tiny phone and some drugs in, to be retrieved like a tampon… what a care package, what a life.
