Was on Friday night , bbc one and stars Daisy May Cooper ( this country , taskmasters)

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as it's all on the I player and I know a few of us have binged it!
I did love this. It had an unusual manic start , but it grew in me and seeing the different episodes through a different lens was clever
I felt sorry for her with Alex and how easy it was for her to fall for his charms.

I’m glad others are wondering about Jen’s backstory & why she moved in to emergency accommodation. I was disappointed that they didn’t really explore this.
Really enjoyed the series though- it was very original & unexpectedly dark. Lots of MN references too- using the word vile & the neighbour seeing her burning her cat & setting herself alight (could imagine a thread about this). Also the cleaner was straight out of a MN thread!
Agree about Alex & Dan being complete twats. At first I thought the Dan character was miscast as I recognised the actor from Marcella & thought he seemed wrong to portray someone a bit dull but it soon made sense when we saw his Tinder antics & what a sleaze he was. Absolutely loved the child actor & his chemistry with Daisy May- felt really real & was hilarious at times.

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 22:20

Jen was fleeing a bad relationship ( this is just my opinion )
She had already had a really bad childhood with her step dad :(
Probably hooked up with her partner and her sons dad quite young , but found out he was just another loser. Then Ended up in the temporary accommodation.
Tried to save the shop worker then Nic.
Has become a kind of vigilante.

We don't know anything about Harry's Dad do we?

dapsnotplimsolls · 26/09/2022 22:21

I agree with the vigilante point. I also wondered about the inquest and whether the couple was questioned/what they said.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2022 22:23

She was on a train after she was sacked from the organic supermarket carrying all her possessions. I assumed she turned up in a random place and was rehoused. She could have been made homeless and offered council accommodation in a different area. It happens. She then tried to make a niche for herself and latched on to Nic.

partystress · 27/09/2022 00:26

Absolutely loved this. Binged in two sittings. So cleverly constructed and so funny. They must have had a blast improvising.

I think a second series could focus on Nic’s back story. Why does she have no friends? How has she ended up with dull but disgusting Dan? What was her life like before Ollie? Why is she so forgiving of Jen but so down on every other woman?

And will she get away with it?

FishFingerSandwiches4Tea · 27/09/2022 07:04

I really enjoyed this too. Top many MN references to count - cheating DHs, crap presents, nightmare MIL, rude shop assistants, crazy cleaner, not giving lifts...😄

It wasn't what I expected after the first episode. Good to see things from Jens perspective too. I felt sorry for both of them.

Also agree that the actor who played her son was brilliant 👏

procrastinatingfool · 27/09/2022 07:22

I watched it twice! Had to get my DH to watch

AlwaysMunching · 27/09/2022 07:31

I just binged this. Was sooo good!

I found them all unpleasant but sort of likeable or at least relateable at different points. The various twists were shocking and I gasped out loud and threw my hands to my face a few times!

The Lucy character was interesting - she was introduced to the viewer from Nic's perspective as being a stuck up nightmare but actually as we saw more of her she was absolutely fine. She was never unkind or rude, she was much more complex, vulnerable and fiery than just the 'stuck up school mum' you assume.

Great acting from everyone involved.

Inkanta · 27/09/2022 07:59

Yes I loved the Lucy character and her acting - naturally comedic.

LikeAnOldFriend · 27/09/2022 08:16

I stuck the first episode on last night to watch while I was having my dinner and then planned turn it off and do some work... ended up watching it all! Thought it was really good, totally not what I expected, I really couldn't figure out Jen's angle, what really happened to the cat, what Dan and Alex were really like, it totally kept me guessing and I didn't see the twist coming.

I'm in two minds about a season 2, it was the mystery that really made me not able to stop watching and I don't know if that could be replicated, but ended up really invested in the characters too and there are a lot of loose ends I'd like to see tied up - lots to explore with Ollie and Nic and Ollie's trauma, lots more background to Jen could come out and the lie that nothing was recording (though it has been deleted), and would love to see more of Jessica Hynes, and maybe get a bit more depth to Lucy too.

I didn't know the actor on the train but if he's also a bigger name maybe a season 2 with more from people like him and Jessica Hynes that were unusually small parts is likely?

OytheBumbler · 27/09/2022 08:31

I should stop drinking wine while watching these things. I didn't see any of the twists coming Blush

I think I need to watch it again now i know. At what point does Nic realise he was getting back at Dan? And did she know Dan was on Tinder?

Despite my confusion I did love it and hope there's another series.

Inkanta · 27/09/2022 08:50

I see actress Karla Crome plays Lucy - another established actor. I liked how she switched from sympathising concern to fiery dramatic outbursts and back to vulnerable again.

Not until the final scene I think but a lot of the action took place after that happened. She was completely in denial.

Evivie · 27/09/2022 10:51

I'm a bit confused with the Suzy character - had she twigged something was going on? They were all quite friendly on the night of the dinner. Or was she implying she knew about Alex & Nic after Alex had died?

the80sweregreat · 27/09/2022 11:41

I don't think Nic knows about the tinder and her husband.

OP posts:
donttalkaboutbookclub · 27/09/2022 11:52

I think Suzy knew that something was going on between Alex and Nic, but maybe not the extent of it. Maybe she realised when Nic deliberately interrupted them having sex, because Alex then immediately went downstairs and had sex with Nic in the utility, so maybe Suzy also saw that, as Ollie did? Thus could then have been the reason Alex broke it off with Nic because he got an ultimatum from Suzy...

mnahmnah · 27/09/2022 12:00

I hoped this thread would clear up my confusion but now I have even more 😂

jay55 · 27/09/2022 12:01

I thought Suzy was probably re examining a lot of past events when she found out Nic was there the night of the train.

This makes sense, I buy that!

MistressIggi · 27/09/2022 12:36

Ollie was probably angry with his mother but took it out on the cat instead.
I think people are being surprisingly nice about the main character - cheaters don't usually get a good press on here, never mind what she ended up doing on the train!

the80sweregreat · 27/09/2022 12:47

I didn't like Nic , she is brittle, she had an affair for years and always late to school with her poor son. She was funny, but that would wear off once you realize what she is really about
She also didn't listen to Jen about anything
Not a pleasant character at all

Mangolist · 27/09/2022 13:16

Bugger, I have put this in the other thread which I believe is no spoilers. I'll get it removed :

I stayed up till 1am watching this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The stand out moment for me (shallow) was the two shop girls on the phones - having teenage daughters, it made me howl with laughter.
Also, I' msure there was a scene where Nic called 'Dean' when she was calling Dan?

TheMoreAssured · 27/09/2022 13:29

Yes she did. Dan was showing the girl on his Tinder to his brother on the sofa. Unbeknownst to them, Nic was behind them and she could see the phone. She said something like "husband is cheating".

TheMoreAssured · 27/09/2022 13:30

She did, she clocked Dan showing Alex whilst behind them through the window.
