Was on Friday night , bbc one and stars Daisy May Cooper ( this country , taskmasters)

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as it's all on the I player and I know a few of us have binged it!
I did love this. It had an unusual manic start , but it grew in me and seeing the different episodes through a different lens was clever
I felt sorry for her with Alex and how easy it was for her to fall for his charms.

Maybe she'll be pregnant in series two. Then not sure who is the dad.
Or Suzy gets her revenge or those two young people on the train dobb her in!

After Jen told her about her step dad , she started waffling on about the bat story.
She just couldn't handle anyone else's feelings at all. Quite a complex character really.

Nic is portraying the 'characters' you find on mumsnet.
The unlikable:
The one who drinks too much and misses important occasions. Crying in the shower 'why do I always make the same mistakes'

Hating the neighbour for not giving a lift (I.e. having boundaries) when she is always running late.

Getting neighbour to make a shitload of quiches. So in those examples she's a classic CF.

The one who has an affair.

Then there's the other 'characters' we find:
Doesn't love husband anymore
Finds out husband is on tinder/a cheating prick
Disappointed in how life has turned out, not doing something amazing.

She really portrayed a lot of the faces of mumsnet, which is really just a sample of women's real lives.

I loved the Becca story. How we thought Jen was an obsessed stalker but really she desperately wanted to save her. Bringing in the abusive marriage that the woman just can't/won't leave. I mean how many threads like that have their been?

I could imagine DMC took all the stories and people you read on here and wove them all together, and I thought it was amazing.

Yes not very empathic and complex. I sensed she loved her son and he was the person she most cared about despite her giving in to temptations and indulging.

donttalkaboutbookclub · 25/09/2022 11:27

I loved this, such a nice twisty plot I thought. Can someone just clarify for me - did Jen go to the village because of Nic's husband? Or was it a coincidence? Because in the end, she didn't ever get her revenge on him, if that's what she went for, Nic still didn't know about her. Or was it because Jen decided she actually did want to be friends with Nic, so didn't tell her?

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2022 11:27

I've known a few people like her . If you have a problem or need a sympathetic ear they are not there for you at all. They really do switch off , they say they can't handle other people's emotions. Which is fair enough , but it can be hurtful. Some people are only around for the good times.
A proper friend is there for you all the time.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2022 11:29

Jen thought she could save the world. You really can't do this sometimes , people have to find out a lot by themselves and don't listen anyway. They want to bury their heads.
It makes life easier I suppose :(

The lift had me laughing, all those threads where people want to get out of ongoing unreciprocated lifts.

It was complex and interesting.

Some tubes won't move if something is stuck in the doors, the drivers give grumpy announcements.

The kids in the carriage could have pulled the cord too.

So many questions, how did they get together, why did they stay together. Why did they keep being polite to family that gave shitty gifts to their son...

donttalkaboutbookclub · 25/09/2022 11:40

She actually was holding his coat as well, so he couldn't pull free. Kept it in her pocket!

donttalkaboutbookclub · 25/09/2022 11:40

I really hope there is a second series.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2022 11:40

The mil was horrible and had two horrible sons.
A cycle there maybe?
She probably liked the attention of being with Alex , he said all the right things and made out he liked her a lot as well. He clearly was only doing it to get one over on Dan, the 'perfect ' brother plus sex whenever they met up
Her reaction to Jen's place was telling too
Not used to anyone who didn't have nice things / money.

Not sure why she went to the village but towards the end I was thinking if Jen plays her cards right she could move herself and son into Nic's nice house. I wasn't sure if she deleted the video of her confronting Nic's husband about his Tinder habit, but she could have used that to split them up.

happinessischocolate · 25/09/2022 10:25

Sooooo Nic was watching the video of Jens date with Dan when she chucked the red wine over him. I assume she didn't know it was Jen though?

I thought she did it because he was a married sleaze bag doing online dating.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2022 13:09

Alex deliberately 'declared his love' for her at her wedding to wreck Nic and Dan's marriage. The little boy was a baby then and 8 by the time of the main action. I assume it was about a year after his death as they were having a memorial service so he must have kept her dangling for some time.

Homeless people can be moved out to villages by social services to be rehoused. It happens near me - people moved from London to council property in Northern former mining village. There was definitely a social worker involved. I'm assuming this was before she met Dan on Tinder.

Skelligsfeathers · 25/09/2022 13:15

The house was horrible! It was so oppressive and claustrophobic! It made me feel awful. Do you think people actually live in houses like that?

It wasn't my taste but didn't give me the negative feelings some people seem to have. I thought it was odd architecturally with all that stained glass. It looked expensive.

In the final real train station memory Nic says we can tell the truth now Ollie knows and Alex says you haven't cared about Ollie for the past 7 years. So yeah, it had been going in for that long. Bit of a long winded "revenge" on his brother as surely it was fucking with his own life too.

Skelligsfeathers · 25/09/2022 13:25

I did wonder if the house was 'another character ' adding to the sense of tension.
They were all horrible really weren't they?

I wonder why Alex came clean at that moment at the station about his motives and why so cruel about it. He could have carried on stringing Nic along if he got some perverse kick out of it. Probably had something to do with getting caught by the son. Getting found out.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2022 14:01

I liked the house , the kitchen was a bit dark , but it had character. Big Windows. Her husband must have had a terrific job. Obviously much more successful than Alex.
She said to Jen that the affair went on for seven years.

Great to hear the different views on the characters - marvellous storyline from Selin and Daisy May - the layering of the characters and the very clever and unique plot line - really hope there is a second series

OhAmBackAgain · 25/09/2022 14:24

I thought jen dated Dan after seeing him on Nic's Facebook page then recognised him from tinder so immediately set a date up with him.

I thought it was the other way round 🤷‍♀️

I thought he said on tinder he was married, she made a video about him and then researched him afterwards. She then befriended Nic at the tombola fete thing.

I think I need to rewatch the whole thing 😁
