Was on Friday night , bbc one and stars Daisy May Cooper ( this country , taskmasters)

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as it's all on the I player and I know a few of us have binged it!
I did love this. It had an unusual manic start , but it grew in me and seeing the different episodes through a different lens was clever
I felt sorry for her with Alex and how easy it was for her to fall for his charms.

I thought it was a year because it was Ollie's birthday around the time both when Alex died and then when the memorial was happening?

yes it was a year, Alex and suzy got the cat costume for his birthday in the flash back, then Suzy got him some stuff for his stop motion animation, for the current birthday.

I agree with pp that when Alex was distracting Nic in the kitchen by pretending to hump the counter. I thought that's not love that's a power trip thing.

SnowWhiteTan · 26/09/2022 11:12

If Alex died a year ago though then wouldn't the cat have been missing for a year, not just the last few days (that's if Ollie did kill the cat that night with the cupboard incident)?

I definitely need to watch it again 😅

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 11:28

It was confusing about the cat and what happened there :( poor thing

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 11:30

Once Alex started messing about in the kitchen and being disrespectful, that's when I twigged he didn't really love her.
It was the fact it was his brothers wife that spurred him on : jealous of him and what he had.

But why did Jen video the affair confession?

SnowWhiteTan · 26/09/2022 08:47

I really enjoyed this programme! I'm confused about the timeline of events though. In the present day, Nic's cat had been missing for a few days, and didn't Ollie kill the poor cat on the evening that he saw Nic and Alex together in the cupboard? So therefore had Alex died very recently (in the few days since the cat came a cropper)?

Maybe DMC can come along and clarify! She's obviously a Mumsnetter!

procrastinatingfool · 26/09/2022 12:04

Also why was Jen pretending to drink and chucking it in the plant pots etc?

MichaelAndEagle · 26/09/2022 12:04

procrastinatingfool · 26/09/2022 11:59

But why did Jen video the affair confession?

She said she started videoing stuff because of not being believed in the past and it was a sort of habit.
But then she lied and told Nic she never videoed her, so... I think it was like a compulsive habit.
With the cat, I think he'd killed it recently as he only just got the camera. I'm not sure I really got the relevance of the dead cat, or what was the sons frame of mind. Maybe that would be explored more in series 2 if there is one?

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 12:05

Maybe Jen wanted to tell Nic about Dan ( hence taping her ) but decided against it once she found she had an affair and he died?
She didn't use this evidence in the end did she ?

Yes I guess so

MichaelAndEagle · 26/09/2022 12:06

She never told Nic. The relationship all fell apart anyway didn't it.
Dan's clearly going to go down the 'haven't been happy for ages' route to justify the tinder activity anyway.

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 12:06

Jen didn't want to get drunk. She wanted to know more about Nic as she knew her husband was such a sleaze , so she needed a clear head.

procrastinatingfool · 26/09/2022 12:07

Okay I see

Nolemonade · 25/09/2022 15:55

I wondered if Jen had a crush or more than a friendship with Jessica Hynes character who she went to rescue. There did seem to be lots of underlying tension between the two that seemed
more loaded than just her trying to help her friend.

The men were universally awful. Her husband reminded me of all the DH’s that get written about on Mumsnet, all seemingly important, high earning, well to do men who would never dream of cheating.

Nic wasn’t that likeable either, came across that friend we’ve all probably had who is funny as fuck but has main character syndrome. She interrupted pretty much everyone around her.

Fucking your husband’s brother for 7 years is shitty no matter how much she thought she was in love.

Would love a second series. If DMC can do more of this stuff and less of the celeb stuff I’d be grateful. She clearly has talent, all the celeb side of things just takes away from that. Also loved the use of music in the show too.

I think that is just what we were lead to think (about the Jen and Jessica Hynes relationship). Setting Jen up as some dodgy character.
But the reveal was that she was actually abused and trying to help other abused people.

Mooserp · 26/09/2022 12:29

I agree that Lennie Rush was brilliant in this. The interactions between him and DMC were so natural

pullpullpullthattail · 26/09/2022 12:37

procrastinatingfool · 26/09/2022 12:04

Also why was Jen pretending to drink and chucking it in the plant pots etc?

I think this, and her filming Nic, were supposed to help confirm that Jen was dodgy, when actually they were there to support her to support Nic?

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 26/09/2022 17:11

It was a year since Alex died as at one point Suzy says that it's his anniversary - I think when talking about getting a memorial seat at Old Trafford. So Ollie killed the cat way after knowing about the affair but presumably after dealing with holding a secret and the confusion for a year as an 8 year old.

Redora · 26/09/2022 19:05

The death of Alex and how it affected Nic was quite reminiscent of Fleabag in some ways, I thought.

Enjoyed this a lot, even though the men were vile. Didn't quite "get" the Lucy character either, felt like a weird mix of Motherland characters and AIBU threads!

dapsnotplimsolls · 26/09/2022 19:14

Maybe all the talk about the memorial stirred up the memories for Ollie and that's why he killed the cat?

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 19:43

Lucy was a bit weird wasn't she?
Maybe Nic didn't make many friends there because they were all crazy. Even crazier than her.
I agree that the Alex character was a bit like Boo in Fleabag. Only Boo was lovely.
It was a similar ish story though

I binged watched in one over the weekend too. First reaction was that I felt sorry for Nic - Alex had completely played her to get one over his brother (though he was an arse doing the birthday prank). I was especially upset over the coat - she thought she rocked it.

I found it hard to think ill of Nic as I love DMC too much! But missing the present opening was crap although the husband could’ve waited (wasn’t there a thread about this?).

Ollie was brilliant. Poor kid. Those presents were rubbish!

I’m not sure I want a second series, sometimes it’s good to leave things hanging.

mnahmnah · 26/09/2022 20:11

I loved it but I have unanswered questions etc!

Why did Jen move there? Why was she in emergency housing? Not a lot of her back story was explained.

Were all of Nic’s flashbacks misremembered? The two teenagers on the train, were on the platform doing the peeing in the snow thing, that she misremembered as being her and Alex. But was all the rest of it too? Alex had obviously already dumped Nic before the train platform as he was annoyed at seeing her, like she was stalking him. I wish we’d seen that.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/09/2022 20:19

Just finished watching this!

I twigged towards the end that Nics memory of what had happened and what actually happened we're going to be two very different things. I also thought she had something to do with his death as why else was she being haunted?

How on Earth she explained it all to the police though?! And the young couple would have been questioned surely?

Yy to the men all being awful but actually Nic was no better really, having an affair with her husbands brother and shagging him in the utility room when all the family are there is grim.

Didn't the second cat disappear as well?! Poor bloody cats 🙁

I couldn't figure out the Jen character, she was definitely obsessive and latched onto people. I was frustrated with her really as I thought she needs to focus on sorting out her own life rather than faffing about with Nics.

Enjoyed watching it and hope there is a second series.

JustJustWhy · 26/09/2022 20:56

I was surprised Samuel Bottomley had such a small part as the lad on the train...maybe she's fleshed his character out for series 2 - blackmail maybe?

Inkanta · 26/09/2022 21:39

Yes you're right about Samuel Bottomley. It is a small part. I think there could be a 2nd series. And we haven't got to the bottom of Jen. She's moved into the area and we don't know why - clearly has some issues. Pulls down hanging baskets, latches onto people and wheeling her way into Nic's life and house. Getting Nic drunk and throwing her own wine down the sink. Not actually providing the wine herself and doing a bit of love bombing and taking advantage a bit.
