Was on Friday night , bbc one and stars Daisy May Cooper ( this country , taskmasters)

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as it's all on the I player and I know a few of us have binged it!
I did love this. It had an unusual manic start , but it grew in me and seeing the different episodes through a different lens was clever
I felt sorry for her with Alex and how easy it was for her to fall for his charms.

From a man's perspective I thought this was excellent, actually.

I read Daisy May's autobiography and she is extremely self-deprecating, so I knew a twist of sorts was coming. She really doesn't see herself as the 'gorgeous, amazing, love of my life' sort of woman that Alex kept saying Nic was. Ergo, him turning round at the and being rude, unkind and hugely dismissive about her appearance at the end, given her cynicism, is the sort of thing she would write.

I don't think there was any of the adults to root for, as it were - not that that's always required, but as characters they were a pretty ghastly lot.

Whilst I think they should leave it there I'll bet the mortgage there will be a season 2.

the80sweregreat · 27/09/2022 13:43

Will Nic learn in series two how to be a better person ? Fleabag did after the Boo incident. (Sort of !)
Maybe she'll set up Dan : that would be funny !
Or her and Jen will go full on vigilantes together : a kind of Thelma and Louise or Cagney and Lacey.
Setting up sleazy men and bringing them down
Or maybe she is too self absorbed ? Knows she did wrong with Alex and unable to face up to anything ? Or she is being blackmailed by the two teens on the train ?

MistressIggi · 27/09/2022 14:17

Maybe she will be in jail!

AlwaysMunching · 27/09/2022 15:16

Maybe there will be a sexy priest in series 2...? 🤞🤞🤞🤞

I think Suz just had a gut feeling and started to piece it together once she knew Nic had been there that night.

Nic did seem to know about the Tinder but buried her head in the sand - same with the cat murdering etc.

FairyLightAddict · 27/09/2022 15:27

Ohhhhh just finished. I didn't expect the ending. So dark. I really enjoyed it.

I think that is just what we were lead to think (about the Jen and Jessica Hynes relationship). Setting Jen up as some dodgy character.
But the reveal was that she was actually abused and trying to help other abused people.

Thank you, I did wonder. I think it warrants a second watch to just pick up on the clues that I’m sure were dropped during each episode that everything was not as it seemed.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/09/2022 16:38

Thus could then have been the reason Alex broke it off with Nic because he got an ultimatum from Suzy...

No. I think he was toying with her to get back at Dan from the beginning. He'd probably had enough especially when she wanted to be open about it.

I see actress Karla Crome plays Lucy - another established actor. I liked how she switched from sympathising concern to fiery dramatic outbursts and back to vulnerable again.

Loved Karla Crome in Misfits!

I think so. Extra confusing because the cat that was 'found' and returned to them wasn't the same cat hence Ollie's coolness towards it.

I thought he killed the second cat and that Nic found the film while Jen went to put the children to bed.

I think he killed the first cat. Nic thought the cat from the Rescue was the original 'lost' one but Ollie knew it wasn't.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/09/2022 08:40

I think he killed both cats? The second cat vanished at the end as well. I think Nic saying 'you're so like me it's scares me' to Ollie was a nod to the fact they're both capable of killing!

Mooserp · 28/09/2022 08:56

Just listened to a podcast with DMC and SH on and they hint at there being a second series

The way I saw it (which might be wrong):

Ollie confessed that he had hidden the 'lost' cat because he found it dead when it had 'accidentally' got into the tumble drier. Nic then knew the second cat wasn't the real one. When she saw the film she realised Ollie had put the cat in the tumble drier deliberately but the second cat was still there.

The flashbacks do make the timeline tricky to follow and I'm sure that was DMC's intention. It has certainly got us all talking - if only she were here to set us straight ...

Mooserp · 28/09/2022 10:22

I thought it was only the original cat that was killed

@Girliefriendlikespuppies

I LOVED that line. You're so like me it scares me...yes. You're both killers. And then Ollie's pretending to cry about it for MacDonalds looks a bit darker too. And Nic talking about how she is gullible when she's referring to Jen, but actually it could be everyone else around her, including her own kid that she's taken in by, and Jen actually does have her best interests at heart.

Nic said 'cheating bastard' when she saw Dan showing Alex the shop girl on tinder. I guess she is too so not a clear cut situation. Also the fact Alex is looking in on it is disloyal to Nic too, so that's her DH and her 'affair partner' both being disloyal there. But then she just fucked her husband's brother in the pantry...

I think Alex had enough toying with Nic/Dan now he was ready to start a family with Suzie. Shit was getting real, he had his own thing.

I actually thought Nic's reaction to Jen's confession was lovely. She said she believed her. Validated her. Made it less awkward with a funny story, expressed how angry she was but gave her a chance to explain, offered her a shower at hers. She didn't just cast her out of her life.

Wonder if there'll be a spike in sales of the coat...

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 28/09/2022 15:29

Oh my god.

Re watching.

The sex scene with her husband first episode, he turns into Alex just before he gets cramp!! I'm going to be watching so carefully second time round 👀

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 28/09/2022 15:29

Also noticed she is playing with the toggle in the graveyard. I'm so invested now.

I'm exactly the same, you know it's a good programme when things keep coming back to you for days afterwards.

I think a lot of us on here have been pretty positive about Jen, and I do really feel for her, but the more I think about it the more I can't excuse all the creepy manipulative stuff. It was such a shame for her son when they were camped outside spying in the window, and the filming plus the whole manipulating of the situation to make friends in the first place (finding gin in the Facebook photos etc and leading with that) is quite chilling, even though she means well and is quite vulnerable herself.

The more I think about it the more convinced I am there's more to come with the young couple on the train because they definitely saw more of what happened. I wonder if there's actually still an accident enquiry to come, with it being just under a year?

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 28/09/2022 17:42

Jen gave me that kind of...precarious identity vibe. Where you've been through trauma and your own sense of self gets a bit shattered. So you latch onto things like the sunglasses and the coat and you try and be like other people to get their approval as you hadn't received that previously on your own merit. And it's not just the things - when she bought the coat she was fantasising about walking around with Nic as friends in their matching coats.

The intensity is the chilling part. The payday loan when you're in temporary accommodation. Dragging Harry around. Leaving him with Dan who she doesn't respect so she can spend time with Nic. I wonder if she's meant to be a representation of over invested/intense Mumsnetters that wade in with women's aid/LTB etc etc without having the background intimacy to make that call in a way OP can listen to, and who get sucked into the sob stories etc.

And when Nic and Jen were talking about what a good husband Jen would make, it's so nearly a lovely representation of female solidarity but it just feels a bit off and a bit chilling and like they're both looking for something in the slightly wrong place and you know they are going to disappoint each other.

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 28/09/2022 17:44

And love how many times she says 'I'm not a psycho'. And you know that defensiveness comes from her Mum not believing her and continuing to live with her abuser. So yes she's not unreliable/a liar, but she is a bit unstable. Great character.

Also noticed she is playing with the toggle in the graveyard. I'm so invested now.

Isn't that why she kept putting her hand in her pocket and also told Jen to empty her pockets when she thought she'd stolen the coat?

Perhaps that coat can be the new Mumsnet scarf!

iPie · 28/09/2022 17:47

MNHQ please can you get DMC on for a Q&A?

procrastinatingloser · 28/09/2022 17:48

Yes great idea @MNHQ
