Was on Friday night , bbc one and stars Daisy May Cooper ( this country , taskmasters)

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as it's all on the I player and I know a few of us have binged it!
I did love this. It had an unusual manic start , but it grew in me and seeing the different episodes through a different lens was clever
I felt sorry for her with Alex and how easy it was for her to fall for his charms.

I thought it was exceptionally good- no-one was perfect and the tone changes so well handled - and no cliches anywhere . even the fact Nic was taller than the men she slept with and they still kissed standing up. so rare to see. huge respect to Selin and Daisy May - I was up to 3pm binging it - SECOND SERIES PLEASE. so nice to see you all on here liking it as well !

OhAmBackAgain · 25/09/2022 14:48

No she met Nic at the school gates (with bags straight from old area) Nic impressed her by telling her the gate code and wearing sun glasses, so she Facebook storked her and spotted her DH and thought she'd seen him on tinder.

redbluegreenwhite · 25/09/2022 14:52

and I adored the relationship between Nic and her son. felt so real as even in the context of mother and child she respected him as his own person and vice versa - even though they both did v dubious things- and I did feel very uncomfortable that he felt he had to handle her emotions. I felt sick watching the brothers talk about the girl from the shops photos-- that is a great weird fear of mine- that the men in my life who I feel respect and appreciate me as a woman secretly are like that. So when Alex told her she was fat etc and pricked her delusional bubble of being loved so completely I really felt her devastation- and to be honest completely could understand why she then did what she did ...horrific though it was. its really made me think. it has a touch of major genius that series.

It was one of a few BBC comedies recently that I’ve loved that are written by, and unashamedly centre, women. See also Alma’s Not Normal, The Other One, Mandy.

I preferred Alma's not normal as it was more working class and based on a true story , but I agree that this was also brilliant and it's good to see so many women writers. I also enjoyed raised by wolves , but that was axed ages ago.
The first series of ' the other one' was also very good.
This wasn't an easy watch at times. The men came out of it really badly!

I thought jen dated Dan after seeing him on Nic's Facebook page then recognised him from tinder so immediately set a date up with him.

I thought she met Dan then looked for him on Facebook/Instagram and found Nic then found her mentioned on the school website.

Nolemonade · 25/09/2022 15:55

I wondered if Jen had a crush or more than a friendship with Jessica Hynes character who she went to rescue. There did seem to be lots of underlying tension between the two that seemed
more loaded than just her trying to help her friend.

The men were universally awful. Her husband reminded me of all the DH’s that get written about on Mumsnet, all seemingly important, high earning, well to do men who would never dream of cheating.

Nic wasn’t that likeable either, came across that friend we’ve all probably had who is funny as fuck but has main character syndrome. She interrupted pretty much everyone around her.

Fucking your husband’s brother for 7 years is shitty no matter how much she thought she was in love.

Would love a second series. If DMC can do more of this stuff and less of the celeb stuff I’d be grateful. She clearly has talent, all the celeb side of things just takes away from that. Also loved the use of music in the show too.

From what I gathered- Jen and Dan / Dom met on Tinder - she thought he was an arse and threw wine on him. She then randomly moved to the same town. Met Nic at the school gate and thought she was like Elton John. She then FB stalked her and realised that Dan was the Tinder guy. She also copied her by buying the same coat.

MistressIggi · 25/09/2022 16:04

Did Alex's girlfriend know something was going on? She certainly had left the friendship with N.

IceFemonLanta · 25/09/2022 16:52

Dan and his dressing gown of doom made me chuckle

hockeygrass · 25/09/2022 17:03

I think it was really fantastic, new and a great binge watch. Loads of positive comments on DMC's insta account.

JustJustWhy · 25/09/2022 19:04

Shouldn't this be in AIBU? 😂

I love anything fresh that doesn't follow the usual format. Lenny Rush is one of those incredible actors who can hold a scene with his facial expressions. You didn't have to see what was happening in the cupboard - his face said it all. Loved it but really wish it could have been longer! Great binge watch.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 25/09/2022 19:28

Absolutely brilliant! Loved it and didn't see that ending coming at all.

Yes, this is the right order. I think it was just pure chance that she ended up in that village.

I wasn't expecting that ending at all, I found it quite upsetting that Alex had strung her along for all those years :(

VioletTopaz · 25/09/2022 20:40

Just binged this. Loved it. And liked the MN references. Enjoyed the twists.

Lenny Rush is an unbelievable actor, and the star of the show for me. I think he actually out-acted DMC throughout. (And the info regarding improvisation supports the fact that he has an incredible future ahead of him be it writing, acting or directing) It also sort of blended with the fact that although Nic was a great Mum in some ways, there was that 'Child parenting the parent' element to it.

The Narcissist / entitlement was there in many of the characters. For those who question why X did Y (e.g the reason for the affair, the eventual nastiness at the end from the brother towards Nic / the husbands infidelity via Tinder with the girl from the local shop) It's all because they can. And that Social Media enables it. It's a definite modern day tale.

I saw characters and behaviours of those I know in real life. As we have recognised 'stories of real life' from Mumsnet in the plot. It's shocking, and borders real life experiences with the added plot twists that most in real life aren't brave or mad enough to do to people who are wicked to us.

plicks · 25/09/2022 21:46

Yes I actually thought DMC's acting was a bit iffy at times, and certain bits of the script were so The Office-ish that it took me out of it at times.

However I loved the whole thing and laughed so much, and also wanted to watch it again almost immediately. The plot was really clever.

One loophole though- Suzie seemed okay with Nic on that last dinner when Ollie caught them at it- presumably that was the last time Nic saw Alex before the train death? But when suzie came round she said "you always made me uncomfortable when you were with him"...

There is definitely potential for another series, noticed Jen lied about ever recording Nic so she's got that up her sleeve. Didn't really get why she was recording her at that point though tbf.

FionnulaTheCooler · 25/09/2022 22:46

Just finished watching, what a horrible little brat Ollie turned out to be, I know Nic pretty much murdered Alex but he kind of deserved it, the poor fucking cat didn't.

On a lighter note, did anyone catch the "Nanny and John" reference when Jen's mum was visiting them at the flat, didn't there used to be a poster here called that?

MistressIggi · 25/09/2022 23:27

I think a therapist would have a field day with a child taking revenge on the cat who his mum and uncle claimed to be feeding while they were shagging. What a thing for an 8 (I think they said that) year old to have to hold.

SnowWhiteTan · 26/09/2022 08:47

I really enjoyed this programme! I'm confused about the timeline of events though. In the present day, Nic's cat had been missing for a few days, and didn't Ollie kill the poor cat on the evening that he saw Nic and Alex together in the cupboard? So therefore had Alex died very recently (in the few days since the cat came a cropper)?

I think so. Extra confusing because the cat that was 'found' and returned to them wasn't the same cat hence Ollie's coolness towards it.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2022 09:35

Although I assumed he'd been dead for a while hence the memorial. I need to watch again.

Yes I thought that too 🤔 I need to re-watch also to try and piece it all together.

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 10:41

They didn't say how long Alex had been dead , I assumed it was a year because of the memorial, but that might have been held not long after he died.

OP posts:
Doubleraspberry · 26/09/2022 10:47

I thought it was a year because it was Ollie's birthday around the time both when Alex died and then when the memorial was happening?
