If the apocalypse comes, beep me - the Buffy thread!

A spin-off from the Torchwood thread where there seem to be lots of people reminiscing about the good ole days of Buffy and Angel and the genius that is Joss Whedon.

I sometimes feel strange confessing to being a Buffy fan in RL at the age of 36 but I love both it and Angel. So if you need somewhere to swap favourite moments, this is the thread!

AleXander is nice and subtle, Soren, but I do think you should spell it with the capital X in the middle

Would love to know if there are any little Buffys out there in the world! Don't think I'd quite have the courage for that...

OP posts:
SorenLorensen · 05/02/2008 20:26

Don't think courage is the right word - much as I love the programme, I'd never inflict the name Buffy on my children - especially as they are both boys

RedFraggle · 06/02/2008 08:00

Serenity - I liked the film too! I watched it at a girlie sleep over party and never looked back...
I think the series is much better - she has a harder edge to her than in the film, but the film still has a place.

btw wed Spike, bed Angel, dump sappy Riley (if you wed Spike then theoretically you get to bed him a lot too! )

Dottydot · 08/02/2008 21:05

Ds1's named after someone in Buffy

AnnakeyRules · 08/02/2008 22:59

Oh, tell us Dotty, you can be cryptic if you like... we're all buffy nerds, we'll guess

I had Anya and Willow on my names list, but dh vetod them both (grrr). If I have another girl, I'm going to insist on Willow, as it will tie in nicely with dd's slightly horticultural name

Dottydot · 09/02/2008 02:41

He's another AleXander - named after Xander! He's 6 now and desperate to watch Buffy as we've told him who he's named after - but he's banned until he's 11!

moosmummy · 23/03/2008 13:50

Had to drag this thread from miles away! Did anyone hear about that reunion thing that happened at a TV festival recently in America? Found this about it and it seems there might still be some old resentments! Interesting reading for a geek like me though

I had forgotten how powerful 'The Body' episode was, my mum died when i was about their age and i found it quite overwhelming when i first saw it.

Used to have a bit of an 'if i was gay' crush on charisma carpenter - she's so beautiful.....

slayerette · 23/03/2008 17:06

Thanks for that link - fascinating reading! Odd how none of them seems to be that succssful after Buffy - even the ones that are working aren't making headlines the way they did when they were on the show.

Interesting comment about SMG not doing any of the dvd commentaries - I've always wondered why that was. And isn't 'a machine' a really unflattering way to be described if you're an actress or is that just me?!

OP posts:
moosmummy · 23/03/2008 18:48

I know, i thought it strange about SMG - i have heard that before. Read an interview with Alyson Hannigan somewhere and she said that the cast weren't all friends, although hinted that it was SMG that they weren't friends with and the others got on fine. I got the impression that she was very much the star of the show and didn't mix with the others and just got on with her work. Also heard that she 'didn't do press' - funny now that her career hasn't really taken off that she's suddenly keen to get involved in this

It is odd that they're not doing anything else really, seen Seth Green in a few things and i think he is fab but no one else. I did hear that Joss Whedon was writing Wonder Woman and Charisma Carpenter was hoping to be in it. I was quite excited to see what he did with it but he has since pulled out.

I wonder if they're regretting stopping when they did - was it SMG that decided she didn't want to do it anymore?

slayerette · 23/03/2008 19:00

I think SMG was the driving force between stopping although Joss felt it was the right time to finish too. The rest of the cast were really upset that they found out the show was finishing through reading an interview SMG did with a magazine but there were hints of tension before that. She used to be called The Duchess on set and the show's original stunt co-ordinator (who was married to SMG's first stunt double, Sophia Crawford) really had a problem with her attitude.

I know way too much about all this

OP posts:
moosmummy · 23/03/2008 19:19

You so don't know way too much, i am a gossip hound and love that you know all that!

I am glad that they stopped when they did and could have a season where they built towards the climax - so many shows in America get cancelled (like Angel) and they then have to cobble together a good ending. I liked how they did it as they had had so many apocolypes (is that the plural!!) that they couldn't just do that again.

The duchess, a machine, i wonder why she's not doing so much these days?!

slayerette · 24/03/2008 10:12

Your post reminded me of Riley when he finds out that Buffy's the Slayer and hears about everything she's done:

'I suddenly find myself needing to know the plural of apocalypse!'

OP posts:
slayerette · 24/03/2008 10:40

This is quite interesting to read!

OP posts:
moosmummy · 24/03/2008 11:41

That is fascinating, especially the bits about her acting skills meaning that we didn't buy into storylines like the Riley or Spike ones because she didn't play them right. Kind of makes sense - and the fact that she didn't even go to the wrap party, that explains a lot!

Have you got any more??

slayerette · 24/03/2008 14:42

well, there's this

I did try to find the Parable of the Knight for you which was the story Jeff Pruitt wrote describing how he felt about his time on Buffy and working with SMG (who he really had problems with) but apparently it's been removed from the internet! I didn't know that was possible!

OP posts:
slayerette · 24/03/2008 14:48

and this is an interesting interview with SMG

moosmummy · 24/03/2008 15:26

Thank you!! You have kept me very entertained on a cold easter weekend

bettythebuilder · 27/03/2008 23:33

ooh, just seen this! Looks like I have a bit of reading to do, then, slayerette

slayerette · 29/03/2008 16:28

there is no end to the Buffy reading out there...come back one day, betty, but I fear we may lose you forever to the endless buffy sites!

OP posts:
bettythebuilder · 29/03/2008 17:40

see you in a year or two, then...

cyteen · 02/04/2008 15:32

This is the reason I choose not to read about any of the real life people involved with shows I love - I much prefer to leave the show as the lovely little invented reality it is, and not tarnish my enjoyment with knowing how fake all the relationships really are.

Buffy, though...still SUCH a great programme. I loved it then, I love it still; every few years I watch all the series in sequence. I'm looking forward to doing this again when I start my maternity leave

slayerette · 02/04/2008 19:18

cyteen - you're right; I've never felt quite the same about SMG since I started reading all this stuff and I watch early Buffy now with a real sense of nostalgia for how sweet and perky she seemed then (didn't much like the character later anyway - she became a bit holier-than-thou for my taste).

I love watching them all in sequence - have just started again recently (last one seen was The Pack - a highly underrated episode imo! - love evil Xander!)

Is this the place to confess to the Sunnydale High T shirt that I wear to pilates? I keep looking to see if anyone has clocked what it means but so far no fellow buffsters have emerged.....

cyteen · 03/04/2008 09:50

You've got a Sunnydale High t-shirt? WANT!

slayerette · 03/04/2008 14:03

Hey - never mind the Sunnydale t-shirt. I have one of those lifesize cardboard Spikes! We used to call him the babysitter when ds was tiny - he loved him! We have a pic of ds sitting at Spike's feet [sigh]
