It's back. I struggled to get in to series 1 at first, but then I got hooked. I am so ready for this escapist drama.

I was up until 2 am watching it. I thought it took a while to get going but the last few episodes were good. Not enough hanky panky though!

FreddieStandensBFF · 26/03/2022 10:46

Yes, stayed up and then finished this morning but I have covid so normality is suspended.
I prefer it with less sex. I seem to have finally trained my brain to see it as fantasy soap opera rather than period drama, which is less stressful. Some good performances but generally a load of pap.

Torunette · 26/03/2022 11:20

It's jarring with me in a way that the first season didn't. I can't quite put my finger on what it is though.

I think it could be that there are just too many anachronisms for it all to gel with me. It's the little things that are constantly pulling me out of the fictional world: Lady Featherington's dress, the use of sinamay for hats, the very obvious difference in hairstyles (and married women without their hair up), the fact that no-one quite looks as though they belong in the same time and place, fictional or not.

To be honest, it's Lady Featherington that I have the most problem with. She looks like she belongs in the 1950s. It's a bit like someone suddenly dropped Bette Davis in a regency drama.

Torunette · 26/03/2022 11:22

And there's no proper rakes or schemers either. It's all a bit safe and careful.

PrinzessinCressida · 26/03/2022 12:21

@InflationRising I thought there would be more seed but I will take what we got - it seemed appropriate to the plot and still very appealing, in a different way to the first season.

I might need to rewatch with less of a focus on the main couple action, but there seemed to be less humour? I'm not sure about some of the performances either.

I really loved the first season in all its glorious soap opera romance preposterousness, so my expectations were very high. I don't know that they were all fulfilled but my take right now is that it was good enough.

PrinzessinCressida · 26/03/2022 12:23

@Torunette , I think Polly Walker's shape absolutely does not lend itself well to the regency dress shape, so they've had to come up with a weird hybrid for her.

TheDuchessOfMN · 26/03/2022 12:26

I had to switch it off too during the second episode. I was so disappointed.
I loved the first series, I don’t remember Daphne being so irritating Confused

WildFlowerBees · 26/03/2022 13:02

I enjoyed it but found Daphne irritating she seems to be speaking more RP in this series it seemed a bit try hard.

Is there a season 3?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 26/03/2022 13:52

I found it disappointing. Watched two episodes, can't be bothered with more.

The fun's gone, and Kate Sharma is so dour and humourless, it's painful.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 26/03/2022 13:53

Love Eloise, but that's the only bright spark in the whole thing.

Shame.

crocus776 · 26/03/2022 14:13

I was a bit disappointed. Not enough sex, and they were really missing a sexy male. Anthony doesn't do it because he's so miserable.
It all felt a bit formulaic with the main characters. I couldn't warm to Kate Sharma.
The dresses were stunning, as always, and I'd really like one of the nighties and dressing gown things.
I did shed a tear at the bit with the King, I thought that was really well done.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 26/03/2022 14:28

@AngeloMysterioso

Eloise is definitely my favourite female character, Claudia Jessie is great.
Eloise is a great character. I think her character has made this season for me. I wasn't that keen on it, I just think the first season had the edge for me. I'm looking forward to seeing Colin's story though, hoping that's a good one, if it follows the books
BruceAndNosh · 26/03/2022 15:11

I've watched halfway into episode and it's not really holding my attention.
Possibly cos Anthony and Kate Sharma are both very irritating. Poor imitation of Darcy and Lizzie Bennett sparring without the charm.
The lovely Eloise looks like she had a bad lockdown haircut with the kitchen scissors.

However loved the scene when Penelope finally got to talk to Colin, she looked so beautiful.

BruceAndNosh · 26/03/2022 15:13

Daphne really has turned into what Bridget Jones called a Smug Married

TheDuchessOfMN · 26/03/2022 15:18

@BruceAndNosh

Daphne really has turned into what Bridget Jones called a Smug Married
Ah, that’s it Grin

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it

Loopytiles · 26/03/2022 15:48

Grin Daphne was somehow a smug married even before dating!

Febrier · 26/03/2022 18:05

I really can't bear to watch Eloise's acting, but I can see that I'm in a minority of one Grin

At the beginning of the series, are the Schamas stepsisters? I'm not hinting at that changing later on, I'm only early in the series myself and just checking I've understood it correctly.

marmiteadict · 26/03/2022 18:15

They are half sisters. They share the same father but have different mothers.

Kate's father married Edwina's mother when she was young.

So Edwina's mother is her step mother and Edwina is her half sister

magicstar1 · 26/03/2022 18:21

I watched 5 minutes of it yesterday and realised I couldn’t remember much so I binged season 1 instead.
Just started season 2 now

Febrier · 26/03/2022 18:33

Thanks @marmiteadict that's what I thought, I got my words wrong.

OP posts:
minou123 · 26/03/2022 19:15

I've just binged watched it.

I loved it all Grin

Its so cheesy, ridiculous and an attempt at the whole Lizzie/Mr Darcy story.
Its brilliant !

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/03/2022 19:40

Has anyone noticed the musical jokes that have been put in? I won’t spoil it for you, but in at least two ball scenes, the music is somewhat anachronistic, to say the least!

I have watched it all, and now I need to go back and check all the music.

Febrier · 26/03/2022 19:46

I watch with the subtitles on, they give it away. Wasn't season 1 the same?

I was listening to the soundtrack on Spotify while I was doing the dishes today, it's good fun.

Sharrowgirl · 26/03/2022 20:16

I wish they’d get Penelope out of all that awful yellow.
