It's back. I struggled to get in to series 1 at first, but then I got hooked. I am so ready for this escapist drama.

OP posts:

The older ladies , Danbury , the Queen and Featherington have really saved it.
I thought Portia and Cousin Featherington we’re both brilliant Grin
Simone Ashley is stunning ! and Anthony is not bad either, but boy are they dull . zero chemistry and what’s up with all those loud exhales at the end of episode 5 Or 6.

I was wondering about Edwina's dowry(?) from her GPs.

Wouldn't it have gone to her husband anyway so that Kate may not have benefited from it?

Overall I think that she came across very badly.

I didn't get how come they were being allowed back into society for Edwina to be presented tbh.

Was it because Lady Danbury vouched for them?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/04/2022 11:37

Kate wasn't expecting to benefit from Edwina's dowry. The Sheffields had promised a dowry for a good marriage and also to look after Lady Mary. Kate's plan was to ensure her mother and sister were financially secure and then go back to India and work for a living, probably as a governess.

Ah yes of course!

I think it was something Lady Danbury said about her being able to live independently & I thought that she was referring to the dowry.

Notonthestairs · 01/04/2022 12:24

Lady Danbury said something like she was sponsoring them. She'd also arranged for various tutors but Kate made it plain she'd already covered that.

Cutie18327 · 01/04/2022 12:39

I really wasn't convinced with either Kate or Edwina. They were both so wooden and lacked any real charm or chemistry on screen. Kate had a couple of shouty moments which were cringy and Edwina was just plain boring. Plus the whole story line was just really unbelievable and odd.

My favourite characters this season were definitely Penelope and Elouise and I would have liked to see Simon make a return!

diddl · 01/04/2022 14:02

I think it was quite sad that Edwina was played as quite so uninteresting.

But supposedly that was what Anthony wanted wasn't it-just someone to fulfil the role of Viscountess?

I was quite pleased when she told him that she deserved better than him!

SapatSea · 01/04/2022 23:04

Kate' plan made little sense to me. She told Mr Dowsett that after the wedding she was going back to India to become a governess and have her own independent household. In GB during the Georgian era Governesses generally lived with the family of their charge/s so you wouldn't be able to run an independent household nor could you afford it as governesses were paid appalingly and treated as neither a servant nor a family member. Often they were left vunerable to abuse. Kate would have no family back up or protection in India - could she even travel back to India unchaperoned?

It's a weird mix of being a sunny, ridiculously clean, real jeopardy free, fanfic fantasy type world that then has Georgian social rules and mores still applied (the credits list historical advisors)in places.

Midlifeponderer · 02/04/2022 08:18

Not relevant to the plot at at all, but I was totally distracted by how alike Eloise and Theo the printer were. They could have been fraternal twins, their faces and expressions were so similar.

LookItsMeAgain · 02/04/2022 13:24

I was watching something that came up on my Facebook Watch and it was about 10 minutes or so long and in it, the actor Jonathon Bailey who plays Anthony dropped into conversation that he's gay (irl). I didn't realise that.
So, he's trying to play a straight man and I'm sorry but I think that was what was lacking in the Kate/Anthony story line, actual chemistry.

I know some people are looking for Benedict to be gay in the next series but I don't think the actor who plays Benedict is actually gay. I don't know why casting directors get straight men to act gay and gay men to act straight. They really have to stop doing this. They've been doing it for decades and I think it needs to stop.

BonnesVacances · 02/04/2022 14:20

I think you can tell if people have good chemistry by whether you find their character attractive and I now have a huge crush on Anthony. Grin

Whereas I lurve Richard Rankin in RL, but don't find him attractive at all in Outlander which is why I think he and Sophie (Brianna) don't have any chemistry. But I know they screen tested so the crew thought they did, and so it must be subjective.

ermagerdabear · 02/04/2022 15:02

Because they're actors? Are you saying that actors should only play what they actually are? So all the aliens on Star Trek should only be played by aliens, going by that logic or all the actors in Bridgerton should have have lived through the Regency.

Whether Kate and Anthony had chemistry is neither here nor there (a lot of us thought they did) as you said you didn't know he was gay until he mentioned it. I agree with a PP about Rik Rankin and Sophie Skelton. Both of those actors are straight in real life as far as I know, yet there's zero chemistry between them. On the other hand, there are rumours about another actor on that show being gay, yet the chemistry between him and his co star is off the charts.

Loopytiles · 02/04/2022 16:20

Yes, it’s a refreshing change for an ‘out’ gay man to play a straight romantic lead.

So much homophobia still affecting actors.

Loopytiles · 02/04/2022 16:21

Another great example is Hot Priest in Fleabag!

bonfireheart · 02/04/2022 16:27

If anyone hasn't watched Crashing I would really recommend it, stars Johnathan Bailey (his character is so different to Anthony and totally brilliant) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, she also wrote it.

Andylion · 02/04/2022 19:33

I kept noticing his ears which seem quite disproportionate to his head. Not all the time, from a distance they seemed fine but when the camera went in close I was distracted from the passion by the whole ear thing

I've read this twice and it cracks me up. Grin Particularly the part about them being fine from a distance.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/04/2022 19:39

I think it was to do with haircuts Andylion. When I Googled his photos there are times that you can't even see his ears and times when they look like he's best friends with Noddy. I've done screenshots to show.

I am enjoying this but thinking that I don't like Anthony at all. He's a right boring git and Kate would be far better off fucking off back to India. Also wasn't he a right twat to his mistress in series 1?

I much prefer Pen and Eloise.

Rosehugger · 02/04/2022 20:29

Yeah, that's probably it, I find he has no chemistry with women. It's certainly not true of all gay actors.

Rosehugger · 02/04/2022 20:31

Edwina is really boring. I really quite dislike her.

isthismylifenow · 02/04/2022 21:16

I managed to get through episode 1 of season 2. And I will be leaving it there.

I found most characters really annoying... Yes you Kate, Penelope, Eloise, even Daphne for the short appearance she made, still looking like a deer in the headlights.

I tried.

Maybe it's pms or something but I was getting way too irritated.

I did have a giggle about the ears post. I do think the new hair cut makes a big difference.

Rosehugger · 03/04/2022 10:59

I enjoyed the first four episodes but the plot was too thin IMO to be stretched to 8 episodes. 6 and 7 were pretty pointless. Would have been much better as 6 episodes.

LookItsMeAgain · 03/04/2022 13:42

I'm really looking forward to the Eloise story line. I hope they do stick closely to the book with that one as it's a lovely storyline.

I'm now on to the Francesca book (number 6 in the series) but I think once they have done Daphne, Anthony, Benedict and Colin, they may roll the other story lines into the same series.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/04/2022 13:55

I find it really interesting that everyone who watches it has a 'thing' that just wouldn't happen, that they find out of place. As though any of it is realistic. Grin And it's a different thing for everyone.

Mine is that the ex-boxer now gentlemen's club owner wouldn't be invited to a ton wedding at the palace. My Mum was complaining about the first series that there were lots of plants in flower that should be flowering at different times to each other. One of my friends was most put out that the women didn't put on bonnets before going outside.

Mumsnut · 03/04/2022 14:20

Its soooooo sloooooooow
