Something you loved years ago, but looking back, it's shit

I loved a kids' series in 1984 called The Box of Delights. I remember it being a magical Christmassy adventure. I got the DVD and tried to watch it at the weekend. Considering it was aimed at kids, it was unintelligible and unwatchable.

I also felt the same about The Goodies. Laughed myself silly at them when I was a kid. Watched a rare repeat and didn't laugh once - utter, utter rubbish.

What are yours?

Oh wow, I loved the Box of Delights, I shall make a point of not ever watching it again.

Men Behaving Badly ! Man that has not aged well

My family !!

I disagree on The Box of Delights - yes the special effects are awful, but it is still absolutely magical to me and I get shivers down my spine every time I hear the Hely-Hutchinson theme.

And DD (12) loves it as well and we watch it every year, so it is still magical to her as well.

On the other hand, I tried to watch Game On a couple of years ago and cringed every couple of minues that I loved it back in the day.

Pippin2028 · 15/12/2021 21:00

It's on britbox but footballers wives from the early 00s, some of the acting in it is terrible but its so OTT and trashy but I did enjoy watching it again Blush

Charlie’s Angels, the tv series.

Used to spend hours “playing” them in the backyard. Even squabbled with my beat friend about who got to be which character.

On adult viewing, the poor script writing is what gets me now. That series was carried by charisma alone.

bizboz · 15/12/2021 21:08

Button Moon. It really just does look like a button hanging from a black box.

the80sweregreat · 15/12/2021 21:12

Chips! Awful programme!!

The theme music for Box of Delights was genius and still gives me shivers. It was weird though.

Two Ronnies and other classic 1970s comedies. Absolutely loved watching them snuggled up with my parents as a child. Now just can't get past the casual 1970s sexism.

Pinkstegosaurus · 15/12/2021 21:15

@the80sweregreat

My family !!
Agh I get this too, I adored My Family, watched every episode and still revisit occasionally for telly comfort. But definitely some parts I now find problematic and the canned laughter!!
RomeoMcFlourish · 15/12/2021 21:17

Gilmore Girls

Lovejoy and Birds of a Feather.

3luckystars · 15/12/2021 21:23

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I hate to say this but also Gilmore Girls, I used to love it but now find it a bit loud and shouty.

RaraRachael · 15/12/2021 21:24

I agree the theme music from Box of Delights was very good. I can't imagine the kids I teach understanding it or wanting to watch it.

A friend had fond memories of HR Pufnstuf and excitedly ordered the DVD. She hated it as did her grandchildren.

LeftieLucy · 15/12/2021 21:34

Dumb and dumber. Loved it when it came out, me and my friends used to quote it all the time, sing the mockingbird song. Put it on to show the kids how funny it was and it was honestly the biggest pile of 💩

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 15/12/2021 21:34

Round the Twist... really is all about the theme tune

ToffeeNotCoffee · 15/12/2021 21:34

Was too old for Box of Delights.

My Family was ok until Kris Marshall left.

Men Behaving Badly is good but you're right it has not aged well.

Never Seen an episode of Friends.

The Goodies, still like it.

Open All Hours - good in it's day but I've probably watched it to often.

drawhander · 15/12/2021 21:39

Absolutely Fabulous

Popfan · 15/12/2021 21:40

The Box of Delights was directed by the dad of one of my primary school friends - Renny Rye. A claim to fame! Grin

ladygindiva · 15/12/2021 21:44

I came on to say box of delights!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I was obsessed with it as a child. Raved about it to Dc1 and overjoyed to find the dvd in hmv one year. Sat down to watch it with her, only for her to find it hilariously crap. And she was right!

PuppyMonkey · 15/12/2021 21:44

I tried to watch Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves with the DDs thinking they find it a retro 90s hoot and I felt embarrassed at how bad it actually was. Not even funny bad but just absolutely unwatchably bad.
