I loved a kids' series in 1984 called The Box of Delights. I remember it being a magical Christmassy adventure. I got the DVD and tried to watch it at the weekend. Considering it was aimed at kids, it was unintelligible and unwatchable.

I also felt the same about The Goodies. Laughed myself silly at them when I was a kid. Watched a rare repeat and didn't laugh once - utter, utter rubbish.

What are yours?

What's wrong with Seinfeld? I was surprised how well it had aged considering the time it was made. But I just like it for casual laughs. I djdnt watch it at the time so maybe the issue is I'm not comparing it to anything fabulous?

Wpeoruahryclabegtt · 17/12/2021 16:50

Omg do not compare it to everyone loves Raymond! That was never funny and is incredibly sexist.

Classica · 17/12/2021 16:53

I watched a couple of Keeping Up Appearances on iplayer the other day, I used to think it was hilarious, laughing at silly old Hyacinth, but watching it now, I just feel a bit sorry for her, I mean she was a snob and a bit uppity but her heart was in the right place and everyone was awful to or about her.

This means you're Hyacinth now.

@Chachasha couldn't agree more. I should have raised a flag for team Bagpuss when I posted my wishy washy post about Bagpuss's music (which is still fabulous). Bagpuss in its entirety is brilliant, including its commitment to repairing items rather than an ecologically unsound culture of single use plastics and environmental degradation. The BBC Repair Shop is just a rip off of Bagpuss without the branding and original cast, narrative drive. Presumably to save repeat fees for smallfilms?, cheapskates.

Classica · 17/12/2021 16:56

I really need to re-watch The Box of Delights. That was absolute must watch TV when I was in primary school.

SirSamuelVimes · 17/12/2021 16:58

I'm starting my Box of Delights re-watch tonight!!

VenusStarr · 17/12/2021 16:59

Heartbreak High, used to love it. It recently popped up on Netflix so I thought I'd watch again, didn't finish the first episode, it was awful Confused

Stiffcondomhat · 17/12/2021 17:23

Agree about heartbreak high, wish I could un revisit it! Grin

Kevin Can Fuck Himself is based on the misogyny of these sitcoms.

Seinfeld is great.

Tales of the Unexpected uses to terrify me as a child. I love watching them now. So many young famous faces and the plots are just eehh?

Wpeoruahryclabegtt · 17/12/2021 19:23

@user135644 I love it. Some poor mental health jokes but pretty feminist for the early 90s.

Twin Peaks will never age. I watch it right through once a year...including the new series and the film.

The musical “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” - I loved the songs and the love story when I was a kid - and then I watched it as an adult and a feminist, and was appalled at the men using the story of the rape of the Sabine women as motivation and inspiration for them kidnapping six young women from the town, because they want wives!

SirSamuelVimes · 17/12/2021 21:38

Well OP, the first two parts of Box of Delights tonight, absolutely mesmerized and could definitely follow it (with some explainers for the three year old!).

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/12/2021 21:45

I used to laugh at On The Buses as a Child. Tbf to me, I had no idea why but my parents were laughing (rare) so I suppose I found it funny because they did and it was a rare harmonious moment.
People also cite Rising Damp
as a comedy classic. Oh, jeez! Through adult eyes it’s just excruciating.

tobee · 18/12/2021 01:24

Dh & I used to love The Big Chill and hadn't seen it for ages and watched it with now adult ds. Found the bit with Glenn Close lending Kevin Kline too cringe.

Netaporter · 18/12/2021 04:39

The young ones. Me and DH found an ep a couple of years back and were a bit WTF? It was properly shit and to think you HAD to have watched it or you were persona non grata at secondary school the next day 😂

We also tried to rewatch ER a couple of months back. We were both massive fans. Couldn’t get past ep 2 😂

Justjoinedforthis · 18/12/2021 10:44

Ah I still love The Young Ones! ‘Guys, we’ve only got one lentil ‘

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2021 19:53

"Game On " is Shakespeare compared to "Babes In The Wood" and "Girls On Top" ( I can remember the bloody theme toon too)

Recently , I rewatched The Life and Loves of a She Devil ........great at the time but several hours I won't get back.
I haven't searched up Jemina Shore Investigates (as I think it'll be very dated this time round)

I would love to find Gentlemen and Players , anyone remember that ? ( I think 1984/5)

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 18/12/2021 20:55

Looks like someone has put a load of eps of Gentlemen and Players on YouTube:

You can often find obscure shows from the 80s and 90s on there. I guess whoever owns the copyright doesn’t care anymore!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2021 21:23

Thank You kwiksave brilliant Grin

I'll start watching this tomorrow .

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/12/2021 21:26

Dinsney's the little mermaid is so shit, was really excited to watch that with my son but I spent most of it just wondering what had gone wrong in Ariel's life to make her such a wet lettuce.

I've just started re watching through the dragons eye, its still ace even if the special effects have not aged well. Loved it when that TV got rolled in...
