Something you loved years ago, but looking back, it's shit

I loved a kids' series in 1984 called The Box of Delights. I remember it being a magical Christmassy adventure. I got the DVD and tried to watch it at the weekend. Considering it was aimed at kids, it was unintelligible and unwatchable.

I also felt the same about The Goodies. Laughed myself silly at them when I was a kid. Watched a rare repeat and didn't laugh once - utter, utter rubbish.

What are yours?

Are You Being Served
Howard's Way
Riders
To be honest, most comedy and drama series from the 70s and 80s look pretty dire nowadays.

rookiemere · 16/12/2021 17:05

I've been rewatching Are you being served recently for light hearted escapism and I thought it was quite funny Blush.

The Film Version Of The Worst Witch with Tim Curry, loved it as a child and so did a friend, got it on DVD and it was Beyond Shit Sadly Grin

X files. I was obssessed at the time, watched every episode multiple times, was on the forums ect. Watched a favourite ep the other day and my God it was awful ! Acting was wooden, scripts terrible and the great love story/chemistry between Mulder and Scully was non existant. Must have imagined it !!

WellTidy · 16/12/2021 17:11

Will and Grace

Daisy829 · 16/12/2021 17:12

@Bunnyfuller agree about Greys. I still watch it but they all follow the same dialogue style which is basically ranting. Meredith drives me crackers too.

Also didn’t get on with Sopranos when we tried to rewatch it

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/12/2021 17:12

Having looked back on this thread

No one shall slate through the dragons eye and yes, sadly, the first series of The West Wing shows its age now

Shock I love The Box of Delights! We watch it every year starting on the day the dc break up for Christmas (tomorrow Smile). So do my dsis and her dc I think. Mine have never found it unintelligible Confused. Presumably neither did you as a child OP, or you wouldn't have remembered it being a magical Christmassy adventure! Grin

GooodMythicalMorning · 16/12/2021 17:15

Romy and Michelle's High school reunion. Has not aged well!

Oh wow, I loved the Box of Delights, I shall make a point of not ever watching it again.
Don't be put off! We watch it with our kids every year - it's an important family tradition for us.
beguilingeyes · 16/12/2021 17:28

@MorrisZapp

Minder. Used to be an edgy treat when I was a lass. Liked it even better when they replaced Terry the burst sofa with a hot young geezer.

The guy isn't hot after all, Terry was frankly disturbing and it all looks so shabby and sordid.

'her indoors' was best off avoiding the whole bloody lot of them.

The best thing about Minder is London in the 70s. It fascinates me. They do things like drive up to the Albert Hall and just park right outside. Imagine!

No no no - it's still awesome! You have to embrace the shitness of the 'special' effects though! My (now teen) dc love it and still watch it with me every year. Dsis once did a Box of Delights themed New Year for us all, with food mentioned in the programme etc.

Firstruleofsoupover · 16/12/2021 17:29

HillStreet Blues is really well made, and the storylines are often interesting, but the middle-aged character in the Police Dept who tells everyone how young his newest girlfriend is (always in her teens) makes it unwatchable during those bits.

SirSamuelVimes · 16/12/2021 17:30

@onemouseplace

I disagree on The Box of Delights - yes the special effects are awful, but it is still absolutely magical to me and I get shivers down my spine every time I hear the Hely-Hutchinson theme.

And DD (12) loves it as well and we watch it every year, so it is still magical to her as well.

Agreed! I watch it every year, and have trained my DH and am in the process of training my dds to love it too. It's not Christmas unless the wolves are running! Absolutely magic.

@Justjoinedforthis

Men Behaving Badly ! Man that has not aged well
This @Justjoinedforthis …. We watched this during last Christmas’s lockdown and it was so bad. I loved it in the 90s. It’s so far beyond having not aged well that it’s basically unwatchable. Within the first minutes of the first episode Gary says something about watching his 17yr old niece get undressed and me and DH looked at one another like “what the fuck is this?!”
User135644 · 16/12/2021 17:36

The Office. Used to watch it a lot but find it dull now. I still like Gervais's other stuff.

Loads of 90s sitcoms (Gimme Gimme Gimme, Game On, Men Behaving Badly, Birds of a Feather). That whole lad/ladette thing from that era hasn't aged well.

beguilingeyes · 16/12/2021 18:06

The thing that makes S1 West Wing so bad is pretty much Mandy...that and Sam and the call girl (although 'I don't understand...did you trip over something' is one of the greatest lines ever) Seasons 2-4 are some of the best TV ever.
One Warner Bros decided to get rid of Aaron Sorkin (boy...I bet they regret that now), the script quality plumeted.

The last time I rewatched WW I REALLY noticed the spectacularly sexist way CJ was spoken to and about in the early series.
Justjoinedforthis · 16/12/2021 18:26

@DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes that os the exact episode I rewatched! And - not that it would be ok either way - but I’m sure it was his sister’s daughter??
On the flip side, Neil Morrisey is our local celeb and does our Christmas lights which is great….lager Gary?

RoseJam · 16/12/2021 18:27

Rentaghost, The Goodies, Aeroplane, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure - thought it was very funny at the time - now it's cringy/not remotely funny at all
The Breakfast Club - I loved this as a teen but now I think it is a movie where nothing really happens

I think maybe I lost my sense of humour as I have got older

I can't agree with this. I still love them and I think their chemistry is cracking!
SewingBees · 16/12/2021 18:33

Top Gun. Watched it with my sis and nephew a few years ago, we were excited to show it to the next generation. When it ended he was polite about it but clearly internally a bit incredulous that we ever thought it was good, and to be honest I could see why.

No! I watched the box of delights on dvd last week my sister got it for me for my birthday and it was amazing!

I still really love it!

Splashinginpuddles15 · 16/12/2021 18:41

David the Gnome . I loved this as a kid and recently searched for it in youtube to show my son , I had to admit how badly it had aged . Also Cockleshell Bay . As a child I thought the characters looked realistic - no they don’t !
