Something you loved years ago, but looking back, it's shit

I loved a kids' series in 1984 called The Box of Delights. I remember it being a magical Christmassy adventure. I got the DVD and tried to watch it at the weekend. Considering it was aimed at kids, it was unintelligible and unwatchable.

I also felt the same about The Goodies. Laughed myself silly at them when I was a kid. Watched a rare repeat and didn't laugh once - utter, utter rubbish.

What are yours?

Buffy! I loved it back then, so decided DS is old enough to watch it as well. It's so so bad. The clumsy fight scenes and terrible acting were just painful to watch.

JustJustWhy · 16/12/2021 06:19

Wayne's World. I practically wet my pants watching this as a teenager with my gang. What a load of crap!

@HaaaaaveyoumetTed

Through the dragons eye. Tried to rewatch as an adult. really bad idea!

I still think Buffy as a show holds up. I'm sad about JW but I still love it.

Aw yes! I was the same, used to think for years about how amazing it was. Found old episodes online in more recent years and couldn't believe how awful it was! 🤣
Onemorefortheroad · 16/12/2021 06:36

Through the Dragons Eye I mean above!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/12/2021 06:41

original All Creatures Great and Small
it is just so dated and sexist and corny

DoraChance · 16/12/2021 06:42

I tried reading the book of the Box of Delights to DS but he was so bored. And the tv version is nowhere near as magical as I remember!

Isitmeorthemm · 16/12/2021 06:52

Cutting it!
Buffy is still OK if you ignore the shit effects
Angel- again if you ignore a whole bunch of stuff jts not that bad Blush

I showed 'Through the Dragon's Eye' to my Y3 class a couple of years ago and the absolutely loved it!

Cutting It.
Mistresses
Inspector Lynley Mysteries - His acting is just awful.
Trading Places, the film. Not funny, massively racist and sexist as well.

@SylviasMotherSaid

Dawson’s Creek they are all so whiny and use way too many words . I used to adore it as a teen but tried to watch it last winter and couldn’t stand it . The OC didn’t age well either .
Yes! I watched Dawson on All4 recently and not only did they ruin it by not having the proper theme tune, I just found it kind of dull and whiney. Although I do like Joey as a character. She was strong and cynical.

The OC also didn’t age well. It wasn’t terrible, I just couldn’t really make the effort to give a shit about any of the characters.

Gilmore Girls. I used to regularly rewatch the show as it was always on E4 and I used to have the DVDs and everything. It used to be a real comfort watch for me but I rewatched it after a break of a few years and it was just blah. I must be getting old because I found myself sympathising with Emily Gilmore. Lorelai treats her like she was some utterly horrible abusive mother, when she was just a little overbearing and irritating. The storyline about her running away from home at 17 was ridiculous.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 16/12/2021 13:13

Ooh just remembered another one. Secret Diary of a Call Girl was on Amazon prime recently. I used to love that show but made it through about 1.5 episodes before being utterly sick of it. I couldn’t watch her shag another gross old bloke for money. It’s another one of those shows where it was shocking and controversial at the time, but watch it now and it’s just boring.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 16/12/2021 13:16

I find the idea that something "wouldn't appeal to kids" a bit odd - you wouldn't say that something wouldn't appeal to adults because people generally accept that others have different opinions to them. Lots of kids have different tastes, interests and attention spans too - there's bound to some out there who would still enjoy The Box of Delights, although, as with anything, no doubt many others wouldn't.

squashyhat · 16/12/2021 13:23

I've started rewatching ER on More4 but I doubt I shall finish it. It's so relentlessly depressing (and Mark Greene hasn't even died yet) and the storylines seem very repetitive. Probably because they had to have a cliffhanger at the end of each series.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 16/12/2021 13:25

Bits of buffy hold up. There are certain episodes- The Body, Once More with Feeling that are amazing. But there is an awful lot of dross in there that's very hard to watch 20 years on.

Zilla1 · 16/12/2021 13:36

Hush? too. Surprised there weren't more stunt people with a physique closer to SMG so the disconnect between scenes with a stunt person in a wig and SMG looked less jarring.

Mochudubh · 16/12/2021 13:43

Robin of Sherwood. I had a massive crush on Michael Praed when he had hair. I bought the box set a couple of years ago and only managed a couple of episodes before it went to the charity shop. The scripts and acting were dire.

LizzyELane · 16/12/2021 13:56

My Family. Watched an old Xmas special last night, dopey eldest son, daughter so manipulative and disrespectful to her parents I didn't like my DD14 watching it, and a mum and dad so full of sarcasm and spite towards each other, just not funny!

Hooch, Smirnoff Ice, Blue WKD Grin

Showing my age now - The Tomorrow People, and Here Come the Double Deckers.

Giggorata · 16/12/2021 14:32

Yes, having re watched it, I agree about MASH being disappointing. Especially how Hawkeye alternates between being preachy and sexist/creepy.

Star Trek TOS sexism is also really irritating, from the skimpy women’s clothes to the inevitable Kirk snogfest.

SapatSea · 16/12/2021 15:57

Through the Dragon's Eye is awesome - it was made on a school's tv shoestring budget and even looked dated and crap at the time but OMG did children LOVE it!! I feel teary just hearing Derek Griffith start to sing the theme song. When my eldest was 5 she almost died - when we got home from hospital the only thing she wanted was to watch the final episode that I'd taped on VHS and she had been longing to see. All the episodes are on Youtube now.

RaraRachael · 16/12/2021 16:16

I think kids nowadays are quite different from 1984 so that's why I don't think it would appeal to many I know. That's my opinion.

Hahahah I've literally just finished binge watching the Box of Delights. I have to admit it's the music that's the best really, and the reminding of the anticipation when I was a kid.

rookiemere · 16/12/2021 16:34

I loved watching The Day of the Triffids when I was a teen in the 80s, found it incredibly scary.
We watched it a few years ago and man was it slow and clunky. TV pacing has changed a lot since then.
