Something you loved years ago, but looking back, it's shit

I loved a kids' series in 1984 called The Box of Delights. I remember it being a magical Christmassy adventure. I got the DVD and tried to watch it at the weekend. Considering it was aimed at kids, it was unintelligible and unwatchable.

I also felt the same about The Goodies. Laughed myself silly at them when I was a kid. Watched a rare repeat and didn't laugh once - utter, utter rubbish.

What are yours?

I watched a few episodes of Auf Wiedersehen Pet recently and was pleased I still found it funny. Loved it, actually. Only the series set in Dusseldorf, though. It went a bit rubbish after that.

One of my DH's favourite programmes. We watched a film with Tim Spall in it the other day called The Last Bus. Really poignant (although I found it a bit confusing at first)

Does anyone remember The Water Babies? I used to love it as a child and its still a great story but my god the animation bits are poor quality.

Pinkstegosaurus · 22/12/2021 22:57

@LivingDeadGirlUK I remember reading the book and perhaps watching the film years and years ago…it was quite sad though I think? One of those things I haven’t thought about in years and now struggling to remember the plot!

Ab Fab but went off it anyway after several series.
Faulty Towers - so casually cruel, racist and sexist.
Tried to watch Men Behaving Badly again recently but couldn't keep going. Gary and Tony are so juvenile, only Gary's workmates are remotely funny.
Colditz - loved it when I was about 12 but when I saw part of an episode a while back it was tedious and had no sense of drama.

TV has much higher production values these days, it's spoilt us for most of the programmes in the past imo.

lazymum99 · 23/12/2021 09:20

I also loved watching colditz at about that age. A Thursday night I think, same night as Top of the Pops. The music was so dramatic. Shame it hasn’t aged well

I had a huge crush on Chesney hawkers as a teen

I watched his movie ‘buddy’s song’ god knows how many times-I knew it word for word

Watched it on YouTube last year

What a turkey of a film-it was awful!

I can laugh-13 year old me would be very disappointed

snottygrot · 31/12/2021 18:47

Are you being served

Butterflies

George and Mildred

On the Buses

All Carry On films

Porridge

The Good Life

Crossroads

Will go away now as showing my age

Gardeningcreature · 01/01/2022 23:22

I watched Singing In the Rain the other day. It really would not be made today. An older man trying to seduce a woman more than half his age. In many scenes he physically prevents her from leaving, grabbing hold of her etc when she is trying to get away from him. Quite revolting.

SouthParkCovid · 10/01/2022 14:42

Desperate Housewives

Pretty in Pink. Loved it as a young teenager, then ordered it on Prime to watch with my teenager, and she thought it was crap. I had to agree

Twin Peaks...!!!!!

Gosh, I rewatched Twin Peaks a few years ago. I thought it's biggest problem was that it was a decade ahead of it's time. It was so different from the episodic things that were the mainstay at the time.

I rewatched this recently too - I suggested it to my parents, who are Canadian, and they couldn't understand what they were saying.

But I think it has held up, and you couldn't make it now.
